[split] VCU game thread - Coaching creds
Great comeback! You have to be proud of the way the two seniors stepped up down the stretch. X and J Wade are going to be fantastic for years to come. What a great performance from both of them. I hope this gives them a lot of confidence moving forward.

I am very disappointed in how we started...AGAIN. I have said it many times, but Aaron Carver cannot be on the floor as much as he is. You want to know why it seems like there is a lid on the basket? It's because we are playing 4 on 5 on offense. Aaron had an easy put-back and back rimmed it last night???? The guy is a great defender, but he is a liability. We have to see 90% of the minutes from the 4 guard lineups. Wade and BJ are our best rebounders anyway. Getting really tired of seeing our opponent leave one of our guys wide open, knowing that he will miss. The guy has scored 7 points in 139 minutes!!!!

The good news is Carvers playing time is decreasing. Having said that, our best rebounders so far this year have been Ezikpe, Carver, and Stith. Outside of last night, Wade hasn't rebounded that much.

We need Dickens to improve his rebounding numbers for sure. Thats embarrassing. But, that shot from a 7 footer is pretty.

He hasn't, but you can tell the nose for the ball is there with him. Dajour has to be more physical. I hope he spends the entire summer in the weight room.

I agree with you 100%. Aaron Carver is an offensive liability and we just don't seem to score often when he's on the court.

AC saw 12 minutes of action last night. He is doing his job. I don't really see the need to call him out when he plays less than half the game. He also had 1 of our 5 steals.

Because people just like to complain about him. The same people bitched and moaned about Taylor too.

Re: Carver
He takes criticism but let me give you the positive. It doesn’t matter who starts in men’s college basketball. Carver is very smart. He’s an engineering major taking a full load. That said Jeff said he has the highest basketball IQ on the team. He knows what’s going on on the court at all times. He doesn’t look for a shot. Scoring is other peoples job, he knows that. His job is defend and rebound. He’s very strong, no one pushes him around. He did hit a 3 against UNI. He took one against UNI in the home game and Jeff pulled him. He’s way above average ball handler and dribbling and will bring the ball up court when necessary. He’s not on the floor at games end. Jeff goes with a 4 guard offense and Dickens. So 10-14 minutes he does his job well

RE: FECES U Game Discussion
I am not calling for Carver to be completely removed from the rotation. I just think the minutes played need to decrease a little. Giles pointed out that they are, and he's right. My intention is not to insult Aaron, because he is a great person and I think a great leader. All great teams have great role players. Aaron is a great role player. I don't think it is unreasonable for me to expect a D1 basketball player to be better offensively. I am not asking him to average 10 points per game, but he has to be better around the basket. I am positive AC will see where he needs to improve throughout the year, and he will work on it daily.

Edit: Why in the hell do people on this board always feel like posters are attacking players or "calling them out"? If we cannot come here to express opinions about the game and players in that game, what the hell are we here for?

Out of curiosity, what is your coaching background? You seem to have a coaching philosophy & have a belief that you know how many minutes each guy should get, so I am wondering what coaching tree you came from?

0 coaching experience in basketball, but an opinion I post on a message board. I show up to pretty much every game and support the team, no matter who is on the court. Would I ever tell JJ I know more about who should play and who shouldn't...HELL NO. What I can do is go to a place, where I can share my opinions that don't matter to anyone on the coaching staff. If you would like, I can stop sharing my thoughts on the game. Is that what you are aiming for? If it is, let me know, and I'll do my best to make sure you feel really comfortable about reading the things I post.

Just wondering why a guy who has never coached thinks they know more about distribution of minutes then a coach.

You’re more then welcome to post your opinion, but when you constantly bring up Carver’s minutes and your belief that he plays too much, etc it’s annoying. Especially since you have no idea how to construct a lineup.

But since you’re a super fan who goes to every game, you’re obviously the next Phil Jackson

This poster is at least consistent. You always know what you’re gonna get from this person.

Come on. He never said he knew more than Jones. He simply gave an opinion (which, he later learned isn't all that off from what Jones is actually doing).

Yes, I think AC is unfairly criticized on here, as most fans only think that the only contribution a player can make is by scoring points, but I didn't think saying, "I wish we played more 4-guard lineups" was saying that Carver was a useless bum or taking an over-the-top shot at him.

If we can't give our opinions on things, even if they are wholly unqualified opinions, we might as well shut down the board.

No more opinions or criticisms unless you have coaching creds? How about one thread for the entire board titled "Kumbaya"?
