Ken Broo and Ken Singleton
Laughing about UC beating a P5 team in a bowl game. Singleton, whoever he is, said on sports of all sorts, lets see what UC can do against CUSA in Florida.

Keenan Singleton. He must be one of those Houston grads that roots for Texas or Texas A&M.

Oh well, we just have to prove the media in this town wrong again

RE: Ken Broo and Ken Singleton
I didn't see it but I can't say I'm surprised at all. Imagine that happening to the hometown team in other major markets with a ten win FBS home team? The sad part is, when it's not negative, it's no coverage at all.

I shared here two weeks ago that Channel 9 had done a fine job all week leading up to the UCF game. Of course that was partly self-promotion since ABC had the telecast over WCPO's airwaves.

Fast forward a week: their coverage for UC's final home game was non-existent. Thursday evening and Friday morning newscasts I saw had no mention of the game--not even a kickoff forecast during the weather. Sports was all high school playoffs and the Bengals. I surfed over to Channel 19 Friday morning and their only sports story was about OSU v. Michigan on Saturday.

I'm sure Fickell doesn't have time to watch but if he did he'd be appalled after living in Columbus where OSU totally dominates media coverage. This is a major league city (despite decades of Reds and Bengals futility) and UC fans don't even expect that level of attention. But it has remained so poor locally that I believe it negatively impacts attendance and recruiting to some degree.

Broo also had a guy on his radio show Sunday morning (Jerry Palm maybe) who pegged UC for the Cure or Boca bowl.

This is why I liked BK for refusing to talk to the Enquirer's hired gun reporter at BE media days.

Palm always under seeds UC. Used to hear him on the radio in Columbus several years back and it was clear he has a beef with our athletic teams (this is prior to us beating his alma mater, Purdue, in hoops and football). Maybe he was just playing to the audience in Columbus...

No way in hell are we going to the Cure or Boca. It will either be the Military, Independence or an outside shot at the Liberty Bowl.

Liberty Bowl is pretty much off the table barring some miracle work.

Gasp...another AAC crap bowl. 6-5 Southern Miss for an old-school CUSA snooze fest. Rick Minter will be the honorary captain.

Singleton is usually pretty pro Uc. I think his take is basically get a game that is winnable and continue the momentum. Broo, ha, he's a day late and a dollar short on just about everything.

If he's suggesting that a mid-tier ACC team ins't 'winnable' for us that is actually quite insulting.

Broo is an Ohio U Sobcat who is very envious of UC athletics.

It really is. Especially since lowly ECU beat THE University of North Carolina two months ago 41-19.

Respect for UC will continually have to be earned as long as we're part of the G5. That's why I'd really like to see a bowl matchup with a P5. It will be a lower to mid-tier P5 at that and UC will compete very effectively.

RE: Ken Broo and Ken Singleton
Broo isn't interested in having a good local college football program. You'd think, as a sports "journalist", he would at least be neutral considering his audience. I've told this story before but I will nutshell it. Back when Minter was fired, I was working in a sandwich shop in Clifton. Broo often stopped in on his way to work. I asked him about Frank Solich possibly being the next UC HC (since Solich was out of work and he was a rumored target for UC). He laughed and said (exact statement) "Frank Solich wouldn't come to Cincinnati. People are more interested in watching Heidi than UC Football." The store was on W. McMillan, right next to campus. Football wasn't popular then but the dude obviously doesn't know his audience (I was also wearing a UC hat). In hindsight, I'm glad we didn't hire Solich, although you could argue we kind of did in Tuberville. Bottom line - Broo has never liked UC football and will only cover them when he has to. I'm sure he was thrilled with the outcome of the UCF game.

Do we have any media allies in this town outside of Dan Hoard and Mo Egger? Cincinnati sports media is a joke.

George Vogel is good. I think that's about it.

My favorite local reaction when Minter got fired was The 2 Angry Guys, Skinner and the other dude. "Who are they going to get to coach that program". BTW during CUSA days attendance was pretty good until November. When it got cold fans stayed away.

RE: Ken Broo and Ken Singleton
I think George Vogel likes UC.

The local tv sports are evidently required to cover high school football more than UC football. I still laugh when I see a 2 minute segment on a high school football game and UC gets about 10 seconds if they are lucky.

If I were a radio sports guy in this town I think I would try to leave. What is left to say about the Bengals? After so many years of futility and nothing changes. I wouldn't be able to drag myself in to work - "Oh boy, we get to talk about fixing the Bengals again tonight!" The Reds are not much better, but they at least try to do some things differently. The Bengals are an embarrassment to the city.

As for Broo I think he is just lazy. I doubt he's even been to a UC game, or watches them on tv. The only thing he can report on or talk about is what he sees on the highlights.

You know it is a slow news day when we are discussing Kenny B's comments.

I don't subscribe but Jason Williams is doing a good job covering us at the Athletic, by all accounts.

The bigger issue at play is pretty simple; Cincinnati sports media is subpar to begin with. Though I do like what Charlie Hatch and Pat Brennan do for FC Cincinnati (i.e. they actually understand the sport, follow it religiously, and subsequently provide quality articles on behalf of the club). I think Brennan wrote up the ECU recap for us the other day and it was pretty well done.

True, but I'd still put the Athletic as alternative media like Bearcat Journal.

As others have mentioned Mo, Dan, Vogel, Elise Jessie (through marriage).

In fairness to Skinner, he has admitted he was so very wrong with that comment. He does a pretty good job delving in Bearcat coverage traditional media doesn't with his Skinny Podcast along Chad Brendel (Gametime 21) and Rick Broering and the Angry QB with Tony Pike podcast. I skip the XU stuff on the former and the high school stuff on the later.
