If Georgia, Clemson, and Notre Dame all win out and Alabama wins the Iron Bowl but falls in the SEC CCG we could see the following left out:

1 loss champs of the Big Ten, Big 12, and PAC 12 and an undefeated UCF.

if those 3 conferences and the G5 rally for reform and an expanded field I think it will happen.

Here is my proposal:

8 team field

5 highest ranked conference champions (ranked in the top 12) get autobids
After autobids are assigned, the next 3 highest ranked teams also receive berths
If less than 5 conference champs are in the top 12 additional at large berths become available.
Quarter-finals to be played at the home of the highest ranked team the week after conference title games.
Quarterfinal winners move on to the same rotation of NY6 games serving as semi-final sites with site location preference given to the highest advancing seed.
Quarter final losers each play in one of the other NY6 bowls to face teams selected by the committee. Site preference and matchups would attempt to mirror traditional bowl affiliations.
If the highest ranked G5 champion does not qualify for the 8 team playoff they receive one of these NY6 bowls. Any P5 champion not included in the 8 team playoff would also be automatically included in the NY6 consolation games.

This plan gives greater access to the national title but also honors the traditional bowl system and ensures that 6 conference champs have the opportunity to play on the big stage.

ESPiN is paying for the playoffs. They are happy the way it is right now. If the ratings ever go down if the same teams keep getting in, then a change could happen.

I would rather see a G5 tourney as none are ever going to the CFP. I used to be against this, but seeing the same teams year after year changed my mind. In fact, most P5 teams will have no chance at CFP. also, doing this tourney would be a way for UCF to actually win a national title.

I agree, I think a g4 playoff would be a beautiful thing for you and others like yourself, but the AAC has unequivocally rejected that idea. So if you must move forward with it ,then go for it. I'm sure Aresco would completely support the other four conferences anyway he could.

If Bama loses the CCG to Georgia, Michigan is in, Bama is out.

Expansion COULD be in the future, but nothing will happen for 3-4 years when we see how possible realignment shakes out.

The only expansion I would be in favor of would be to six.

3 hosts 6, 4 hosts 5

#1 seed gets lowest remaining seed in the second round, #2 gets highest.


Most years there aren't even six deserving teams, much less eight, but I could live with a 6 team playoff.

Byes will never work in cfb because if the unequal schedules. If you think the current selection process is BS, imagine the shtshow of deciding which undefeated, or 1-loss team gets to skip the first round. Will never, ever happen. I'm in favor of staying at 4, but if it ever expands it will definitely be 8.

Nope. We have 3 which right now are indisputable locks (Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame) and all will be heavily favored to win out.

Then we have 4 playing for the 4th slot. Ohio State and Michigan will eliminate one and the winner has to get by Northwestern. Oklahoma has to get by WVU in Morgantown and then win the CCG. Washington State needs to get past their main nemesis, Washington who does have a defense and then win the CCG. The odds are there will be no more than 2 to choose from and I don't see a big squabble brewing over that right now.

My point is there are no good cases to be made for enough slots to justify expanding the CFP.

ESPN would love expanded playoffs. Its the Big 10 and Pac 12 blocking it. Lots of interest in the ACC, SEC and Big 12.

5 P5 conference champions, 1 G5 highest ranked conference champion, 2 wild cards.

Bowls rotated among NY6 for 1st round & semi-finals: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Peach Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl.

No need for home sites or anything like that for CFP.

I'm right there with you on 6.

Assuming the P5 stays P5, I'm sure with the proper negotiations (ie: $$$) they could be persuaded to expand, but the trade off would probably be automatic bids for conference champions.

That would leave one slot for either a wild card or ND, depending on the Irish's season.

I still think that if the P5 becomes the P4, they will stay at 4 with the provision that an ND team like this year would take the "spot" of one of the champions.
