Wrestling 2018-2019
Summer is almost over which means wrestling season is right around the corner. Kinda...or I’m just not overly optimistic regarding our football team. I know, it’s too soon. I will always remain eternally hopeful.

I’m pumped for this season already because USA wrestling is on fire with tons of potential. With Kyle’s NCAA performance, along with a solid recruiting class and a new assistant coach, I’m more optimistic than in previous seasons for KSU wrestling. This is a great hire for a number of reasons. Scott is a big, he’s had MAC and NCAA success, he will push Kyle, he’s young, we have a lot of raw talent in our upper weights, and he helped turn around EMU’s program before it was eliminated.

I’m seriously considering a trip to Budapest for Worlds. So there’s that to look forward to, at least from my perspective.

From a KSU perspective, the youth movement continues! The redshirt freshman from last season need to step up and challenge for MAC titles and beyond. Of course, Kyle will contend for a national title.

KSU Wrestling Roster has been updated for the 2018-2019 season: https://kentstatesports.com/roster.aspx?...t=position

No Casey Sparkman. No Tutolo and Sparkman would be a big blow to this season.

2 EMU Transfers, Tomas Guiterrez @ 125lbs and Andrew McNally @ 174lbs. 11 true freshmen. Ought to be interesting who gets the starting nod @ 157lbs and HWT.

Brady Chrisman @ 165lbs and Stone Day @ 197lbs will be able to redshirt this season with Bast & Conel in their 5th yr seasons.

From what I’ve “heard”, Casey may be finished with wrestling. The two EMU transfers will be able to help right away. They’re both sophomores and have MAC experience.

RE: Wrestling 2018-2019
Public "wrestle offs" were held on Thursday night and here's my take away for what its worth:

125 - We are young at the weight but have two good options in Ferri (12-18 in his 1st season) and Gutierrez (EMU transfer in his 3rd season - 8 wins last year). Ferri lost two times to Tomas last season but beat him by 1 point the other night. It's too early to know who will end up being the starter but they will certainly push each other. We may finally be turning the corner on a weight class that has been a problem in recent years.

133 - Rooney has dropped a class and according to Coach A, he's at the proper weight for the first time at KSU. He looks strong and could be a leader during his junior year.

141 - This class is a question mark with a true freshman, Leno Ciotti, leading the way. He finished 7th and 8th in PA state tournaments while in high school.

149 - Komara is the starter in his 2nd year. He finished 12-5 last season and was a multiple state placer for Freedom PA.

157 - Monico is back for his sophomore season after finishing 20-12 last season.

165 - Bast is a 5th year senior with a 23-19 record last season, including a 4th place finish in the MAC tournament.

174 - Barreiro returns for his sophomore season after going 21-19 with a 4th place finish at the MAC tournament last year.

184 - McNally is a great addition (sophomore) from EMU. He was 18-16 last season / 5th in MAC tournament. He won a DI Ohio title and placed another year in high school. He will have to unseat Colin McCkracken who went 12-22 as a true freshman last season.

197 - Kyle is ranked #2 in the country and will face #1 Bo Nickal from PSU on 11/11 when KSU travels to Happy Valley.

285 - Heavyweight may be an issue AGAIN as our options are a redshirt freshman (Bolia) and a true freshman (Cover). Bolia was 12-13 last year while Cover placed 7th at FloNationals his senior year of high school.

Bast and Conel are the only seniors on the roster, with just 3 juniors.

Lambert58,

Stone Day and Caleb Brooks were the top 2 recruits for Andrassy/staff, but neither are on the roster. It looks like Caleb Brooks ended up @ NIU, but not sure what happened to Stone Day?

Do you see McCracken redshirting to give some separation from McNally and to allow him to improve while not burning a year? Is Berthold in play @ HWT?

I imagine they left after Matt Hill took the Edinboro head coaching position. I don’t see Day anywhere.

I didn’t see Berthold on the roster originally but he is listed now and wrestled yesterday. Unfortunately, he’s too young to solve our perpetual issue at 285.

McNally is very good so a RS for McCracken may be in the works.

Clarion Open Place Winners:

McNally 1st at 184 - had 3 pins and a MD
McCracken 3rd at 197
Bast 1st at 165
Barrerio 1st at 174
Rooney 3rd at 133
Komara 4th at 149
Ferri 2nd at 125

This is one of our best finishes at Clarion in several years.

Thank goodness. Ends the weekend on a somewhat high note after Friday’s debacle vs. Ashland.

Yeah, I think Billy Bolia will be a good HWT by the middle of this season and have a nice career at KSU.

Looks like the coaching staff has bumped McCracken up to 197LBS and redshirting him so he can step in when Conel finishes up his eligibility this season.

141lbs weight class seems like a mystery, 2 true freshmen, Hunter Yackee & Leno Ciotti, and a redshirt sophomore in Corey Simpson.

Looks like the new assistant coach is a having a positive impact on the 165lbs, 174lbs, 184lbs, & 197lbs.

Next Friday @ the KSU Fieldhouse will be a heck of a test for this team with Iowa, Wisconsin, & CSU-Bakersfield come to town.

Agreed. Even though we wrestled 6 back-ups against a DII team, we shouldn’t lose. Komara needs to be better.

If we’re ever going to compete with Mizzou for the MAC title, we simply can’t have 2 weight classes that aren’t competitive. Bolia can win some matches plus, as you pointed out, we have a bigger coach that can work with the upper weights. We have A LOT of depth at 184, 197 and 285.

141 is going to be problematic...

Friday is going to be awesome! Can’t wait! Watching the Brands alone is worth the price of admission!

And we thought the football team plays a tough non conference schedule. Home against Wisconsin, Iowa and then at Penn St. I think the Russians and Iranians are visiting next week.

lol An absolutely brutal 2 days against 3 Big 10 powers, plus a very capable CSU Bakersfield, as well as a TRASH ref that worked the Iowa match. Despite the losses, Friday night was awesome and we showed enough spark in enough matches that an Iowa dad remarked: “Those Kent boys didn’t roll over and play dead.” Well...we kinda did against PSU. Talk about being led to slaughter. My hope is that Cael Sanderson rewarded us with an away/home deal as thanks for Kyle killing Ohio State’s chances in Cleveland last season. The catch being, of course, we had to visit PSU for its first home dual...

141 and 285 are the holes that we anticipated. Ferri looks as good as a 2nd year can at 125. Rooney was robbed against Iowa and if he just wrestles (and shuts up), he can win matches at 133. Komara had some good stuff at 149. 157 is a train wreck - Monico must be hurt. Bast is solid at 165. Barreiro looks good at 174 while McNally is our best class to date at 184. I’m not sure why Conel wrestled with the bum shoulder. Until Kyle and Monico get back, we have 4 weight classes that are problematic.

RE: Wrestling 2018-2019
Class of 2019 is signing NLIs. Here’s who we have:

Earl Blake (Linganore, MD) at 125. He’s a 2x state champ ranked #16 at his weight. He was the NHSCA Junior runner up and a Fargo Junior AA.

James Limongi (Genoa) at 165. He’s a 1x state champ and 2x placer. He’s also ranked #16 at his weight class.

Avry Mutschler (Lowell, MI) at 149. He has finished in the top-four all three years (4th, 3rd, 2nd). He was 8th at Flonationals and 7th at the Junior Folkstyle Nationals. He’s ranked as the 8th best prospect in Michigan's 2019 class. Perhaps we stole one from CMU?

Jacob Sherman (Olentangy) at 125. He placed 4th in 2018.

Chris Langguth (Rootstown) at 184. Placed 6th as a sophomore and 3rd as a junior. He was a NHSCA Freshman AA.

Rooney took 3rd and lost to Tutolo in the process. Taking 4th were Komara, Bast and McNally. As a team we finished in 8th place. We have too many holes in the lineup.

Yeah it looked like we were making progress last year not so sure now. I suppose if Conel could have wrestled 5th out of 16 would have been possible.

Kyle Conel just tweeted:
“I’ve been battling with an injury for awhile. I should have had it checked out sooner but I didn’t. I’ve decided to choose my health and will be undergoing surgery that will end my season. I will be reevaluating my future in this sport and am doubtful I will continue after this.”
