RE: Bowl Game
The Orlando Sentinel’s Brant Parsons and Stadium’s Brett McMurphy both have Liberty in the Cure Bowl as a replacement for the AAC, and both reporters have the Flames playing former Big South Conference rival Coastal Carolina.

Ideally this wouldn’t be a replacement game for the AAC if we were a member of that conference and they wouldn’t then need to worry about losing a bowl slot. Thus the AAC should ask us to join! Eh eh eh, see how that works!?!03-lmfao

If we are 7-5 the Cure Bowl has to take us if they can’t fill the spot.

7-5 with two FCS wins is the same as 6-6 with one FCS win as far as the selection goes.

I understand that. That would mean we had 5 FBS wins and 1 qualifying FCS win meaning we were bowl eligible. Due to our agreement with the Cure Bowl they would have to take us over a 5-7 team.

RE: Bowl Game
So with another week of data on the books, I’ll go ahead and say that if Liberty beats both UMass and New Mex. State, then the Flames will definitely be in the Cure Bowl on December 15th. There’s simply not going to be any other option, unless they take a 5-7 team instead.

Agreed. But those are big “ifs.” I think we’ll splint those two games, most likely losing to UMass and beating N.M. State at home. We are going to hammer Norfolk St. to end the season. But we’ll get punched in the mouth hard a couple times at UVa and Auburn.

Still, can you imagine the positive momentum we’d gain from a bowl game our first year?

RE: Bowl Game
The game @UMass is a toss-up IMHO so I definitely wouldn’t be too surprised at the outcome, win or lose. But my honest intuition is that Liberty will be up for the game, well-rested from the Bye week, and come back with the W.

Know for sure in 3 days!

Ha! But isn’t that LU’s story..... 6-6.

Could be that they have come to the conclusion that a bowl game for Liberty this year is highly unlikely due to the fact that only 78 teams can go to a bowl this year and 48 teams already have enough wins to go to a bowl game which only leaves 30 teams that have qualify for a bowl game and there are 29 teams that are only 1 win away from that magic number with another 20 teams besides Liberty that are only 2 wins away.
Remember Liberty can only go to a Bowl game this year if every 6-6 team has a bowl game and before the highest APR 5-7 team is awarded a bowl game.
The Cure Bowl has to take a 6-6 team over Liberty this year even if Liberty does not lose another game this season.

RE: Bowl Game
@ArmyMike: point taken.

I admit the loss at UMass was so heartbreaking that I just didn’t have the energy or desire to talk about it. Just sort of numb for a few days.

Anyway, the main thing now is play as hard as possible against Auburn, then WIN the last two games and finish 6-6.

Bowl Watch 2019

https://collegefootballnews.com/2019/01/...conference

I imagine the Cure Bowl is one of the last bowls filled for both the American and the Sun Belt, even if there is no order by finish. The above link shows the American with seven bowl tie-ins to fill and the Sun Belt with five.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/standings

The American has six teams with four or more wins so they will likely be bowl eligible. That doesn't include a 3-3 ECU (0-2 in conference play so they may just have loaded up on an easy non-conference schedule) or a 3-1 Navy who has plenty of games left with a great start to reach a bowl. We need to cheer for SMU, Memphis, or another AAC team to get the Access Bowl slot which will free up one of their other bowls if they don't have enough bowl eligible teams.

The Sun Belt has five teams at .500 or better. This looks like the more likely option for us to get into the Cure Bowl. If one team can dropout with a few upsets to a non-bowl team, they'll fall short of the needed 6 wins and we've punched our ticket (if we win 2 more non-FCS games).

RE: Bowl Game
Missouri is 4-1 and will surely have a winning record. But at least for now, they are banned by the NCAA from appearing in a bowl game for this season. That ruling is under appeal, and could be changed. But the gossip I’m hearing is that it probably won’t be changed, and Mizzou will have to sit it out this year. If that turns out to be the case, you could see a lot of teams being reshuffled to fill in gaps. That could definitely work out in favor of LU. Especially if they’re 8-4. That would be very appealing to a lot of the lower-tier bowl games.

Liberty finally picked to go bowling this year by a News Outlet!

I'm intrigued by the bowl selection & the opponent!

What do y'all think?

Obviously great if LU makes a bowl this year. Possibly playing UCF is brutal.

The 2019 schedule is generally soft. That is okay given that LU just completed the 2 year transition to FBS. This current schedule gives LU time to continue building the football program. It will take a few more years of quality recruiting to even try and complete with a high quality G5 program such as UCF.

RE: Bowl Game
UCF will do everything in its power to ensure it plays a P5-opponent in whatever bowl game they play. Doesn’t mean they *Can’t* play Liberty or some G5 team. But they don’t want that and they probably have the juice to avoid it.

A good breakdown of all things that have to happen. I like the emphasis on the fact that we have to do our part first before anything else matters.

RE: Bowl Game
Mark Schlabach, one of the 2 espn.com writers who make weekly bowl-projections, now has Liberty U. playing in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis vs. TCU on 12/31/19.

And two other college football analysts —Jerry Palm of CBS Sports and Bill Bender of The Sporting News — both project Liberty to be playing in the Birmingham Bowl on January 02nd. Palm projects UCF as Liberty’s opponent; Bender has Liberty vs. SMU. Much as I would love to see Liberty in a bowl game, I gotta admit those sound like very bad matchups for the Flames, IMHO. We shall see.
