Buffalo
I'm not surprised there was no previous thread on the Buffalo game. I have two questions: (1) Is there any data that shows that these games held on other than Saturday a good idea? (2) With Buffalo's ascendancy in basketball and now football, what are the chances that they will eventually bolt the MAC as others have (Marshall for one)?

RE: Buffalo
During the game they showed the new indoor practice facility that will open this Spring on the Buffalo campus. In comparison our coach has a fund raising page for better practice field turf.

On a serious note ... until the President/BOT decide to make a real commitment to athletics ... be it FB or BB or both ... complete with the financial and facility commitments needed ... Kent success in the top sports will almost exclusively be once in awhile, and rarely sustainable.

Rotating coaches in and out only masks the real issue.

Not sure what you mean by "good idea." We play these games because they're part of the TV agreement with ESPN. We get about $1 million per season out of the deal, so I imagine the money we receive trumps any misgivings the administration may have about whether or not the games are a good idea.

As for Buffalo leaving the MAC, my completely uninformed pinion is: maybe. The pieces are starting to come together to make the pitch. Success in the big 2 sports, investment in facilities and the fact that they would bring a lower-middle TV market could be attractive to a C-USA.

To Cleveland Special Teams-may be before you put up childish mojo references behind your post regarding Kent State already has an indoor practice facility one might ask the question.
How old is the turf in the indoor practice facility?

The reference meaning it's a lot cheaper to buy/put down turf than build a new facility ... have no clue how old the turf is, but suspect around 6/8 years.

But I do believe just about every sport uses it in some form or fashion.

I believe the "carpet" was put down in 2006, making it 12 years old.

Thanks, goldenflash99. So, they are played for the TV money. Makes sense now.

It always seemed to me that Buffalo would fit in better in a more "eastern' conference, being a SUNY school. Of course, conference are less geographical than they once were. The AAC East or C-USA East would be potential options.

The TV money isn't the only benefit. In a recent Monday night game they said Andy Reid first noticed Kareem Hunt because he would be working late every week night during the season and always has ESPN on in his office. So he inadvertently ended up watching a decent amount of Toledo games and Hunt stood out. I would think that would be a recruiting tool Mac schools could use.

I am not sure you remember what schools are in CUSA East. Buffalo as an area and as a school has more in common with schools in the MAC than the schools in CUSA East. Marshal is probably the closest geographically to Buffalo and that is farther than a number of schools it currently plays in the MAC and in terms of schools those same MAC schools share more in common with Buffalo than Marshal and many of the CUSA schools.

Not sure where this idea that Buffalo would want CUSA comes from. CUSA is not special right now especially for a school like Buffalo. The only conference that remotely makes sense outside of the MAC (which frankly is its best fit as far as complete packages go that is even remotely likely to happen) and a P5 conference (which is not happening) is the AAC and the only way that is happening IMO is if they are hit hard and if that happens then you would have to see what pieces are left to see it it would be worth joining.

RE: Buffalo
Buffalo switching to either the AAC or CUSA would require them increasing their travel budget significantly. I don't see either conference as an upgrade from the MAC.

As for the facilities upgrades with the exception of a complete tear down and rebuild Kent has slowly been renovating both stadiums. The MACC just got a new center court scoreboard. They have updated the lights, new chair backs, added tesla coils, and updated the speaker system. They are in the process of renovating the MACC Annex to give the teams a dedicated practice facility. Dix stadium had the turf replaced last year and they are securing the funding to create a new academic center on the north side of the stadium.

Standing corrected here, as I have not heard any of this until now ... but

I do question why build an academic center at Dix ... wouldn't that be better served somewhere near campus/classrooms/library???

The student athletes spend more time over in that area of campus than they would on campus. Around Dix stadium you have field hockey, soccer, softball, baseball, football, track, cheer/dance, and lacrosse. The new building will all the students to stay in the area to study between practice or weight lifting. They are also moving the coaches offices into the building so it will give them better access to the students during study tables or any questions they may have.

The newly renovated Annex is going to have classrooms and study areas on top of the practice areas for basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and wrestling. Because of this there will technically be two areas for the students to go for academic help.

On top of those projects in phase 2 of the 10 year master plan they are going to build a connection between the student center and the MACC. It is hard to find details of what they plan to put inside but they are calling it "Student Life Assembly Infill" not sure exactly what that means.

Call me stupid ... but if they got $$$ for all this (which is good) there should be some change left around for some fieldhouse turf???

From a March 2015 article,

“Certainly we have not made the investments that other institutions, some very close by, who have invested millions of dollars in new facilities,” Warren said, according to Akron Beacon Journal. “You must have private support to really renovate Dix Stadium, MAC Center or other kinds of capital outlay.”

My guess is ... this is a perfect example of left hand-right hand ... if the training facilities and many practice facilities are, or will be, in the annex, wouldn't it be more convienent to have the academic center there, too???

Not a complaint, just an observation ... also closer to dorms/student center/library.

RE: Buffalo
Where is there free space to build it on campus? Between practice, weightlifting, and games I would assume students would spend more time over by practice facility than by campus. Then on top of the new facility they can always go to the study rooms in the dorms, library and student center. The new building also gives the coaches new offices away from the MACC and new film rooms to help coach the athletes. To top it all off it will look better on tv to see the building vs the empty stands that currently sit there.

RE: Buffalo
Forget updating the facilities what we need to upgrade is the marketing department. Right now they have ads posted for the basketball game against Shawnee State stating the game in on Tuesday November 7th. First off that doesn't exist this year and the game is actually on November 13th. How does that make it out of the department without being caught?

Yes, but - no University President would ever say 'yep, our facilities are perfect. No need to give us any more money'
