(11-02-2018 09:01 PM)Seahawkhoops Wrote:  Alright, went to the game here is my two cents:
The good:
- First and foremost, Toews is flat out LEGIT! Great poise and incredible court vision out there for a freshman. Plays under control, and even when he had a chance to force the issue he doesn't. And he plays both ends he defended pretty well too. He already appears to be a leader.
- Cylla could prove to be a beast. He has to stay out of foul trouble, he picked up two cheap ones tonight.
- Taylors stroke is still great
-Ellmore played ok. Certainly not as bad as some folks here make him out to be.
-Halftime adjustments haven't exactly been CB's fortay, but tonight he appeared to make some adjustments at halftime.

The bad:
- Perimeter D is still bad. That was almost the sole source of the run before halftime, not defending the 3.
- 3 point shooting was atrocious, i think i heard 5-25? With a PG with vision like Toews, the shooters need to be in position and ready to shoot because he will find them. I think we shot at least 3/4 airballs tonight from 3, and that was against a significantly smaller team.
- Gary, to me, i'm not really sure what he offers. Had some silly turnovers, his shot isn't great.
- our big guys FT shooting was terrible. O'connell wasn't close on 4 attempts, except one he banked in. CaCock's attempts were not great either

That's pretty much it for me, I'll be interested to see how Towes plays against Clemmons on Tuesday. We need to play better Tuesday than we did tonight.
Oh, and our very own 08 did a solid job on the mic! The first time you pull out a stuttering papapapa ponder call like the old guy, I'm done

Elmore's defense was great. I don't think anyone scored on him. He was the most vocal player on the court.

Fornes can flat out shoot/score so don't forget about him. Taylor played a really good game tonight via getting caroms and little things which I like and he can score too. I feel that this team has a ton of potential and will be good in the end. I really think that they let off the gas pedal tonight. The starting 5 is really solid. The bench guys will begin to show in time. O'Connell,Estime, Sims and Gadsden are going to show at some point. And, Gary, Brown, Elmore and Kalina are going to have their moments too.

To me it was a let down performance to only win by 28 or so but to only be up by 7 at the break after a huge letdown. Give credit to an experienced winning team that show some heart out there. We won't know until we play some real games. Toews is legit and makes a big impact and it appears that Cylla will also be a big factor too. The halfcourt offense and defense was not there at the end of the 1st half after a huge lead.

Overall, I'm very excited about the team's talent level and recruits coming. The talent level that this staff gets is awesome and the future is VERY bright. I see future CAA stars when I look at Toews and Sims. Estime may also be a guy that can emerge also as he is very solid.

Mitch's Tavern. Patio knows what's up and I've been there many a time. Onto Campbell...we need to get that one!!

Quality analysis. I think Ty Taylor will take Clemmons on Tuesday, did a pretty good job on him last year. That would be quite the daunting task for Toews in his first regular season college game.

Hoops pretty much covered it, but I’ll add one more positive: I love our ball movement. There were a lot of possessions last night where 4 or 5 guys touched the ball and very few dribbles were needed. That selfless play bodes well for us.

If we can do that when teams throw zone at us we’ll be in much better shape as well. Granted, it’s much easier to move the rock against a D-3 than Clemson, but it was still fun to watch.

I agree with all except one thing.

Kalina.

I just don’t see it. Aside from being absurd tall there’s just nothing there in the way of D1 talent.

I like this version of CB McGrath a lot.....

From Alex Riley's story: "The eight reserves who played nine or more minutes combined for 23 points but went just 9-of-27 from the floor. McGrath called one stretch of the opening stanza “the most selfish 13 minutes of basketball I’ve seen in quite some time.” He told players they could meet with him to talk about their roles going forward if they needed a reminder.

“Every man that came off the bench, they thought about shooting the ball. I think we took more shots from the bench than we did from the starters,” McGrath said. “I guess they played about the same amount of minutes, but that doesn’t mean you have to shoot every time you touch the ball.”"

“I told them between now and Tuesday they’ve really got to decide. I just need five guys. I need five guys who want UNCW to be successful. I said I’ve never seen one person beat anybody, ever in basketball. We need five people at least that are going to buy in,”

Disagree 1000%. He called out players constantly last year and now he's startiing that way again. I've never liked coaches handling it that way. If he's got a problem, keep it out of the media and in the locker room or with players individually.

There is ZERO upside in bringing this to the microphone.

If he was calling out players by name, individually, I’d agree with you. Since he’s not, I’m fine with it.

Agree. I don't believe he has to pretend to the media that everything is great in the locker room when it isn't. The whole reason they ask questions and he answers them is to give reporters and their viewership an idea of what is happening behind the scenes. He didn't call out anyone by name in a negative manner, only made it an overall issue he saw with the team. If CB is frustrated in the locker room but then comes out to the media and pretends it's fine, that sends mixed signals to the team.

I think the upside to this is that the players don't like being called out in the Star News as being selfish, and this will light a fire under them to adjust their play on Tuesday.

Agree 100%. And also agree about the ball movement, that said, we have to knock down some damn open shots that come as a result!

I agree with everyone that it is fine what he said. He basically called out the entire team minus the 5 starters. He even praised Ty Taylor specifically. The back up guards need to look up to him on how to play team basketball.

Seems like we have a solid starting 5 that can beat anybody in the CAA, now McGrath just needs to find a couple guys off the bench that he can rely on (Estime?, O'Connell?). I know McGrath likes to play a deeper bench coming from Roy and UNC than most coaches do, but if enough guys don't buy in then it sounds like he won't force it.

They will knock them down once they feel comfortable in their own skin. It's a mental barrier that all players have to overcome. When you're trying to establish yourself, that's tough. Think back to your own experiences. I had to deal with that myself and I've seen it a bunch so I know that it's real. Once you break through, you're fine.

Looked at the box score and Matt Elmore seemed like he had a solid game. 17 min, 4 pts, 6 rebs, 2-3 fg attempts.

Sims is a guy to watch. I think that he can get in that substitution pattern and start making a difference. He's long and skilled, but it may take a little time. Heck the other PG finally broke through with a 3 ball so he may get some run too. I do like the starting 5 though. If Toews can get you 8 assists per game and give you say 8 points per game, you would really have something. Kid can play.

It would be cool if Matt could get rolling a bit. That would be a nice addition off the bench.

Since the game wasn't streaming I couldn't watch it. But it seems that McGrath was not necessarily upset with the bench missing shots, but just shooting quick bad shots, instead of moving the ball around to find the right shot or running the planned sets. He mentioned how Taylor didn't force any of his attempts.

CG is right. It's always aggravating when he comes in a game because it becomes 5 on 4

7-footers don’t grow on trees so I can understand why we keep hoping Kalina becomes something. Especially after we lose Cacok to the NBA next season. But we can’t force things and give him meaningful minutes in CAA games either.

Kalina is a senior; he used two years of eligibility at a JUCO in McGrath's hometown.

One thing we’ve all avoided asking so far...

WTF happened to the anticipated arrival of the black jerseys. The school went full court press on releasing them, even advertising “back in Black” on Saturday night... Alex mentioned in the pregame they’d be in them... then all gold.

What happened there? Someone screw up on laundry duty?
