How about "The Louisiana Tech Love Bugs" --- Only those in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas will understand this most likely.

When UTSA had an election for its mascot in 1977, the top nine suggestions were the armadillo, eagle, el conquistador, jaguar, puma, roadrunner, star, toro, and vaquero. I don't know all the details of exactly how it went down, but Armadillos actually won the election, and then a recount was asked for. The election then ended up being declared void for some reason, and we somehow ended up with Roadrunners. lol

Maybe someone else from UTSA who knows more about it can fill in the details.

One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, "Battle of Stone's River" was fought a couple of miles from campus. Virtually every able bodied man in Rutherford County was a confederate soldier; many of whom also fought at Shiloh, (Chattanooga, Franklin, etc.). I never understood why we weren't called the Rebels. I mistakenly thought that the Blue Raiders were our substitute. Turns out we just didn't have any imagination. So, I'd change it to "REBEL RAIDERS".

Spent a lot of time in the woods around campus and in the woods along creeks in this area throughout my childhood. Ive only ever seen one copperhead.

I would go with something independence based because the citizens of Mecklenburg county were the first in the country to declare independence from England (according to lore anyway)

Yuck! too true! Hit a swarm of dem little beggars and you can't see thru your windshield. They weren't quite as bad this year though.
