Lived in ATL suburbs for a total of 20 years...14 the most recent stint, and I can count the number of times I took MARTA anywhere on both hands and have fingers left over. Why? Because I was accosted for money by vagrants/drunks/punks EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I rode it. Last time I rode MARTA was to the 2014 GS vs. GSU game...hadn't even left the North Springs station before I was being panhandled for cash....and it'd been five years since my last ride. I guess being white means I have spare cash I can (read: should) redistribute to those 'less fortunate'.

You can bet your sweet arse I never voted to bring it out to the 'burbs...

every time? that sounds way overblown. During my senior year when I lived in an apartment close to the Lindbergh Station, I left my car at home and rode MARTA 5 days a week both ways. MOST people I saw were commuting students to GSU/GT and blue-collar workers. Are there some panhandlers time to time? you bet, I've definitely seen some. I spent some years at NYC, recently stayed few months in DC and traveled to San Fran couple times, and trust me, ATL panhandlers are "gentle" in comparison. If you avoid eye contact and read a book/listen to music, they move on and dont bother you. You can't live in a bubble only with people who you approve of.

Ironic that suburbians complain they dont use MARTA since it isnt nearly as functional as metros of other major cities, when they themselves actively prevented MARTA's growth for almost 50 yrs.

Like I'd said I only took MARTA 8-10 times over that 20 year period and yes...it was every single time. Mostly the Doraville station, and down at the airport.

Well I have voted for it everytime. So now I know who has been canceling my vote. When the Falcons moved to the Dome in 1992, dad and I would drive to Hightower Station and take MARTA the rest of the way. He refused to pay more than $5 to park at the Dome. I was 13, we never had any problems for as long as we did it. We only stopped once I was over 21 and wanted to tailgate.

I was in high school when Marta was expanding to Perimeter Mall, people around here were adamantly against it, fearing increase in crime, which happened. We used Marta pretty often when we had Falcons season tickets or going there otherwise, we dont now that ride-share is so readily available

Source that supports crime increased because of MARTA expansion?

Note: I know you don’t have one.

Anything but. I don't take kindly to people in my face begging for money as if they have a right to do so. I don't go to their places of business, homes, or neighborhoods and beg for anything...why shouldn't I expect the same courtesy. Panhandling is a crime, BTW, but I understand the city of Atlanta not wanting to crack down on it for fear of being insensitive to the less fortunate, the under-served, or whatever politically-correct classification you want to hang on them, what with votes and all.

Ha. The police don't crack down on it for the same reason GSP doesn't crack down on the people who do 60 in a 55 zone. But feel free to spin it however you like.

You're absolutely right...and if the GSP did crack down on those doing 60 in a 55 zone...then you'd see far less people driving 60 in a 55 zone. Transitive property works here, too...

And therein lies the problem. You keep chipping away at the margins..."5 mph over isn't REALLY speeding", or "marijuana isn't really a gateway drug so it should be legalized, or "but the child was born here so the parents can stay., too"...and before you know it you are no longer a nation of laws, but a nation of suggestions, and anyone can do anything they want as long as there's a chance they can argue what they did wasn't really that bad. I want no part of that scenario, and I don't think you do, either.

RE: Georgia State Fans
Well this took a weird turn. MARTA is fine. I'm sorry folks have experienced bad moments on the train. To the sir who took it 8 times and E.V.E.R.Y. TIME! was panhandled

...um...what?...

Yea ok maybe YOU should avoid the train.

Lived in Atlanta for 5 years took the train from Civic Center to Midtown 5 times a week. Literally got off at Civic at midnight a lot of nights and never once got mugged, accosted, anything. Sure there were some drunks sometimes and yea I got asked for money once or twice but like that happens in every single city in America.

MARTA needs to expand, period, end sentence, next topic. SPECIFICALLY to the new Braves stadium. Anyone denying that clearly doesn't realize where they're living. Atlanta is a city on the rise and folks need to wake up!
