1988 jmu football video

Don’t know who put this out there, but this is an absolute treasure right here.

1988 jmu. My freshmen year. Vs VMI. I’m sure I was at this game.

Lots of shots of the stadium....including the god awful track and crown on the field. No giant scoreboard, apc, clear view of the hill and tracks.

You young’ens won’t even recognize this place.

I thought in 1988 the Band was the main draw to football games?

Awesome video from so many perspectives. Landscape, football team/stadium, marching band stuff. Cool, cool, cool.

Wild that one of the best college bands in the country had kids being weirdo goofballs hopping in a line on the 50 mid-song. Like, this was the best out there at the time. I'm starting to understand why so many old men think marching band is bull***t. When they were in HS/college, it kinda was...

I was also a freshman in the band. What'd you play? (I went to the Doc Severinson concert at convo that they mentioned at the start of the video.) Makes me want a $6 Mr. Gatti's delivery.

I suspect it's the parents of a (freshman?) MRD who shot the video. That game was on parents weekend, and everything about it screams "visitor to campus".

Did anyone experience or even remember the "hill"? I remember one year it was raining and the creek below was running pretty strong, some students would slide all the way down and into the creek.

Remember the hill well, though it was more of a big party rather than going to the game. You really couldn't tell much about what was happening other than if the stands cheered you started hollering and clapping.

Band marching in in pairs took FOREVER. That was your pregame show, ladies and gentlemen.

Also, they used to march.

My most memorably Hill experience was on a Parents Day game in the mid 80s. The train came through a very packed Hill area. They kept making announcements- train 30 min away, 20, 10 etc. There was a ton of people both above and below the tracks as it crept through at about 1 mph. People running ahead of it to put coins on the track. Ah, the days before liability when Darwinism ruled.

You sure? I saw a band stand still for at least two tunes during that show on the video.

I played trumpet, '88 & '89...can't remember if I went to see Doc or not...and I hear ya, this video brings back memories of calling up JM's for delivery of one order of nachos and 2 cases of Beast. "Of course we're 21!"

Two years prior to my freshman year but yep, that was it. Salem High School's stadium down the road from me is probably nicer, holds more and doesn't have the track!

Basketball was the top dog back then. I think '88 was the year before Lefty arrived.

THANK YOU for posting that; it's awesome. I was on campus then and (I think) at that game. Brings back memories.

'81 grad. Were there stands and a stadium to watch the game from? "The Hill" was covered w/ students & fans during my time there, & yes a train would slowly come through the crowd and mess up our "hillgate". Rarely did we watch the game, or remember much of anything the next day.
