Room for improvement, yes. But better than the all whites we wear on the road
1. Rice isnt the Blue and White
2. Everyone wears white
3. We suck on the road even more than at home and they look like we decided to wear the white flag of surrender.

Gray helmets, blue jerseys and gray pants would look great.

I do agree the helmets were terrible. You can support the USA and the military without tacky flag like decals. Its possible, but seemingly impossible to most of the world to find a classy solution.

blue helmet with OER, blue jersey, definitely gray pants.

I can roll with that.

Blue-blue-gray for home
Blue-white-gray for away.

Huge improvement from the current crop.

And it looks like the wrong shade of gray as well. Sheesh.

Is it?

https://staff.rice.edu/Template_RiceBrand.aspx?id=4718

That's what it looked like to me, but the size differential, plus on TV may have made it look different

Honestly, I'm not sure either.

One thing is for sure. We are not using the official "blue".

I think the uniforms looked much better up close, in the daylight, than they did from the stands, after the sun went down. Here's a pic that I took of my son cheering the team's entrance from the Patterson Center. (click to embiggen)

After dark, the Owl logo was merely a dark silhouette. The numbers also lost contrast under the artificial lights - very hard to read from the chairbacks. I didn't realize we'd switched QBs for a bit until I read it in the thread.

And here's a closeup of the uni next to the 'official' Rice gray. I believe the unis are somewhat lighter, closer to silver, but not objectionably so.

RE: Uniforms
Angle of incidence = angle of reflection.
That's the problem with the helmet stickers at night.
They are reflective substrate, under the blue Owl ink, and at night they are reflecting the night sky.
We see dark blue ink on a black background.

The old SabreOwls (my personal favorite) would have been as indecipherable using these materials.
If the new ones were made the way the SabreOwl helmet stickers were, inked over clear vinyl, we'd be able to see the artwork and not just the shape on the helmet, day or night.
There could be any number of reasons why the thick clear vinyl of the SabreOwls wasn't used.

...and my first impression of the all-grey was that Under Armour was usurping the Adidas contract. The grey does hide the blood better than white.

Which logo are you calling SabreOwls? I'm not familiar with that name.

I believe Grungy's referring to these Alborn-era helmets:

That was my thinking. Steve Moniaci's "War Owl," my favorite as well.

That's it.
The white or blue ink is printed on clear vinyl, so you can see the helmet color below it.
There were also 4" square SabreOwl stickers on reflective stuff, but they were never used on helmets, or we'd have had the same problem back then.

...sigh...
Going to have to pull one of those blue-on-clear ones out of the archives and put it on my current car.

RE: Uniforms
I would make the War Owl/SabreOwl and the Old English "R" my two logos.

Football -- I'd use the War Owl wings in blue on silver/gray helmets, with the "R" on the shoulders of the jerseys (blue with white trim and numerals, white with blue trim and numerals), and silver/gray pants. I'd like to see the college logos make it into the uniform in some way, ideally on the sleeves, but NCAA rules might require that they be helmet stickers. Particularly since we seem to be playing so many early afternoon games, I would also try to make the white uniform the home uniform. I think that requires NCAA approval as well.

Basketball -- I'd do "Rice" in OE above, and "Owls" in OE below, the numerals on the front of the jersey, and name in gothic plus number on back, with War Owl logo on sides of shorts. I'd do a silver/gray home uniform and a blue road one. Or maybe white home, blue road, silver/gray range.

Baseball -- I'd do one jersey with "Rice" in OE across the front, and for the baseball bat jersey I would use the War Owls.

I like both logos and I like trying to work both of them in for all sports. I'd also like to see the college logos incorporated into all uniforms.

RE: Uniforms
Why it is called SabreOwl?

My friends and I called it electrocuted owl, since it looked like a skeleton silhouette of an owl being struck by lightning. Although I never saw it in person - just in archives etc.

Because I call it that.

Not that I can recall the specifics, but it is probably related to three things:
1) the F-86 Sabre, America's first swept-wing jet fighter
2) it just looks fast
3) an unused MOB halftime show about "SabreDucks" that was passed over for being too silly, in the mid/late '70s. (Brian Johnson was the lead author. He was a tuba player, in WRC, and was half of the champion foosball team of the same era.)

Never heard the "War Owl" name before this thread.
Electrocuted I can see, but SabreOwl just flows better.

Steve actually called it "War Owl" when he drew it.

I will say that although I had never heard it called SabreOwl, I pretty much knew which one you had in mind.

Trying to find a look we can win with. About as much a chance of that working as anything else at this point.

We look good in the blue and grey we wore against LSU, but I would like to see Rice go back to Nike. The colors look good together. I've never been a fan of the Adidas designs.
