Exclamation Bye Week Bearcats Football Talk
Part of me wishes there wasn't a bye week so the rhythm of this season's winning performances and momentum doesn't stop. But, every team has to do it so it's a wash from that sense. We can use the rest to heal up some dings and nicks and work on getting better in practice. I wonder how the loss of Campbell will play out for the second half of the season and as much as I'd like Doaks to get back we're absolutely loaded at running back right now. The ability to run and Truck Warren aside, I'd say my pleasant surprise for the first half is the play of the secondary to include tackling and the overall play of Ridder. I really felt good about our front seven coming into the season but the back four was a real question mark. They have played much better as a unit than I would have ever anticipated. If you can believe this, Cats defense is FBS #6 best at passing yards/game, #3 passing completion percentage and #14 in passing first downs/game. Some of this credit goes to the DEE line but our secondary has been absolutely tremendous compared to what we've seen in years past. We definitely need to clean up penalties however. Cats are ranked #127 in penalty yards/game (91.8).

Never thought we would be this good at defense this year. I know the competition hasnt been the greatest, but still... Ridder coming out of nowhere to play like a seasoned upper classman, definitely not a frosh. Thought for sure we would continue to trot Moore out there. Doesn’t feel like a rebuilding year, feels like a great time watching this team. Got to be a year ahead of schedule...

FWIW, Cats move up to #49 Sagarin. I believe we were #60 last week.

I think the loss of Campbell as a leader of the offensive line will be difficult to replace, but I think/hope we are in good hands with Robinson. We heard rumblings about how much progress Robinson made in the weight room during his RS season, and I think people around here were talking that Robinson could be the next Deyshawn Bond. Hopefully those people are right.

They still make some mistakes, but their overall play has been great so far. The addition of Cam Jefferies seems to be making a difference, and I am very impressed with Coby Bryant. Bryant was one of the first guys that Fickell recruited, and if I remember right, I don't think Bryant even had a ranking on 247 until after he signed. He seemed to be completely off the radar, and in year two he is the starting CB after a good year on special teams.

I agree. I thought the defense would be much improved this year, but I did not think they would be shutting these teams down like they have. There was a lot of improvement last season, though I feel people chose not to notice it due to how poor the team played overall, but we actually saw tackling improve last season, and it looked like guys were in position to make plays...they just did not.

With another year of development, and maybe a slight change in philosophy on our staff I feel they are finally calling an aggressive gameplan and it has been fun to watch.

I think the addition of Stripling has really helped this team, and I hope he sticks around for awhile.

Bryant's brother, Christian, played at OSU and is currently with the Browns. Fickell was familiar with the family and Cobe. Maybe Christian was in his ear, but Fickell's hunch has paid off so far. Bottom line - coach has connections in the state and the trust of many coaches of those programs. We see how those relationships, and the ability to develop players, pays off. Just look at UC vs. UConn to see the difference player develop makes - we were barely 1 point better lastt year and we are now 42 points better.

Robinson has had some snap issues that have thrown off the timing of plays, but other than that has not seemed a major liability on the line.

Two weeks of taking the snaps with the first-unit in practice will help that.

Hopefully they'll take a little time on the off week to learn how to stop the option.

RE: Bye Week Bearcats Football Talk
With the Bearcats at #25, We're getting some good press:

No. 25 Cincinnati: RB Tavion Thomas

The Bearcats are off to a 6-0 start and have had a lot of help from young players on the team, but most have been sophomores. Thomas, however, has been one true freshman who has contributed in a big way for the Bearcats. Thomas has played in four games, rushing for 259 yards on 37 carries and 4 touchdowns. He is tied for second-most rushing touchdowns on the team and has given Cincinnati some help in the run game behind Michael Warren II. Thomas could prove valuable down the stretch if he can take some of the load off of Warren II. -- VanHaaren

Bad/Good Press:

No. 23 South Florida: WR Terrence Horne

Even though Horne is out for the season with a torn ACL, he deserves a nod for his performance against Georgia Tech alone, when he tied an NCAA record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns (98, 97 yards) and also added a 3-yard touchdown catch. He tore his ACL a few weeks later. No true freshman has had the same impact, though running back Johnny Ford is starting to emerge. He had 77 yards and two touchdowns last week against UMass and ranks second on the team in rushing. Coach Charlie Strong raved about Ford's potential in the preseason. -- Adelson

My Bearcat Freshman Review
Tavion is doing great; I've never seen a Bearcat RB that was so hard to wrap-up and actually tackle than Dayton Dunbar's Tavion Thomas. He avaerages 7.0 ypc and has 4 TDs.

FR Charles McClelland was the best Bearcat RB in the spring.

WR Jayshon Jackson is 3rd on the team with 14 catches.

PK Cole Smith is 2/3 in field goals, 30/31 in XPs. He was a 2017 recruit but he/the staff managed to save last years eligibility so he has 4 more years to play 3 seasons after 2018. Last year the team used four different PKers!

FR RG Jeremy Cooper has been 2nd string all year, or at least since he grew to 315 lbs.

Not to mention, he has a 93% catch rate (14 catches our of 15 targets) which is pretty damn good for a Freshman...means that he is getting open and catching everything thrown his way.

If you enjoy reading about possible next jobs for coaches employed at UC head on over to eleven warriors. The idea was floated that Marcus Freeman should be hired to fix the OSU LBs next season.

He's well respected and has done a nice job at UC this season is the prevailing opinion. Plenty of the usual BS that you would expect as well - just an interesting distraction.

I'm guessing Freeman's next stop will be as a head coach.

Love Tavion at TE. Oh wait, he's a running back.

Same sentiment as I wanted Chris Oates bad. He will be an NFl player with his frame and instincts. Wouldn’t have been as disappointed if he went anywhere besides UK. Don’t think he’ll regret his decision but I believe he would have loved UC if we stay on same track we are on. Good luck to the kid as I always root for cincy high school players.

Tangent: UK is not SEC football. I can’t stand the fans or cincy high school students who choose UK as a last resort. I didn’t want to stay in Cincy. Wasn’t smart enough to get in OSU, Miami, Indiana but UK seems cool as they are SEC. my only other option was OU.

UK football: Their head coach is horrible. Watching the UK Texas A&M game he looked as clueless and incompetent as an old tubs at UC. He had a smile on his face and didn’t even look pissed after the loss. Tubs at least had some emotion. Vince Marrow should be the highest paid football coach at the school. If it wasn’t for his recruiting they would be absolutely dismal. They do have some talent this year. Btw, I absolutely loled when I forgot Eddie Gran was their OC and watched his play calling at the end of the game.

Um, you have to be fairly smart to get in at UK. Hate their basketball fans? Sure. Mock their football program? Sure. But their academics are really good. Now, that other Kentucky university in Louisville? Best description I have heard was "a community college with a D1 athletic program grafted on".

I'm sure he could make more money at OSU, but I have to agree with Dsquare here... I think Freeman wants to be a head coach, and I think a LB coaching gig at OSU is a step back on that goal, even if the pay is better.
