Potential rivalries going forward.
I figure all the Florida Schools are rivals to an extent, but I know Jacksonville and North Florida are a big deal, being in the same city. I dont know about the intensity of other combinations in Florida.

But for potential rivalries, some that I think has potential are

LU and LU (see what I did there)

UNA and KSU (mainly because we overlap each other in recruiting and are relatively close to each other. Also will be playing football against each other and that in itself develops rivals.)

Liberty and UNA (nothing really in common, except both joining the same conference at the same time.)

UNA and Lipscomb (have a small history in some sports with each other, and only 2 hrs separate the two schools.)

Liberty and NJIT ( the two northern most schools in the conference, really just didn't want to leave NJIT out, that's all)

I think for us Lipscomb makes sense because the schools are similar. Athletics will probably be FGCU. They are strong in most sports and are similar to us in aspirations. KSU maybe because of being familiar but they are blah to me. Stetson in baseball.

It sure sounds weird to hear Liberty--in central Virginia--referred to as a "northern school."

Didn't mean to make it sound like y'all are Northern, just more north than the rest of us.

When I was going to grad school at Ole Miss, all my classmates were convinced that Virginia was "up north."

I'm taking a guess that the "up north" perception comes from the DMV area.

It's hard for people from the deep south to understand that more north than Tennessee is still technically south.

I grew up in and refer to KY as home.

MidSouth = Kentucky

I think regionally/geographically, Kentucky is technically considered the northernmost southern state.

I think because we are parallel with WV and VA, that lumps them into the southern states as well.

I’m thinking for us Lipscomb will become the rival.

Are there current established rivals in conference?

I couldn’t really find anything about current ASun rivalries or teophies between teams. I would imagine UNF and Jacksonville would have something since they are so close.

I think it will take a while before Liberty gets a rivalry going. Most rivalries begin due to geographic closeness and that doesn't apply to Liberty here.

They have the Suntrust Wooden Barrel. It is across all sports.

Well so far it’s looking good for a Liberty vs. Lipscomb showdown since they appear to be to top 2 teams in the conference this year.

I am a Lipscomb alum, and our biggest rival far and away is Belmont. I think Liberty could become a good rival for us with the Christian mission focus, but proximity and overlap among alums may hinder it. For example, I do not know a single graduate of Liberty (excluding online) here in town. My circle may just be small, but I just don't think our regions overlap much with graduates.

Lipscomb will not be our biggest rival but y’all probably will be the biggest in the ASUN. Just like we won’t be yall’s biggest overall rival. There are a ton of alumni in Nashville so I guess that’s just your circle. I’ll probably be moving there in the future.

Yes, I think we can build some great rivalries and comradery with our overlapping missions. Great to have you in the A-Sun!

This was posted in the basketball thread but I wanted to divert some discussion towards rivalries. I am not really familiar with any rivalries within the conference and the history in this thread shows either there really aren't any or they aren't very strong. Typically the last game of the season is reserved for the biggest conference rival (as far as I know this only really applies to Lipscomb as their biggest rival is Belmont). With that said, I can see that it looks like the conference fulfilled that in the upcoming season.

The last games of the season for each school:

Jacksonville - Stetson
North Alabama - FGCU
NJIT - Kennesaw State
Liberty - Lipscomb
North Florida - Stetson (odd number of schools means someone had to sit out the last week of the season and North Florida drew the short straw)

At first glance it looks like the conference did a good but not great job at pairing rivals. It makes sense but doesn't look like the optimal choices. NJIT is the odd school out to me so anyone pairing with them is not ideal and I would have given them the last week off. The Florida schools would all pair up somehow, someway. I would have gone with a North Alabama - KSU pairing based on football. The LU matchup makes sense based on last season's results and proximity to each other (at least for Liberty). With Bellarmine joining, they may replace Liberty as Lipscomb's end of season rival with Liberty drawing NJIT by default.

Thoughts? Hopefully we get some much needed rivalries going that the whole conference and even beyond will take notice and get behind.

Ah, that time-honored question. I've lived in three other midwestern cities and consider Louisville a midwestern city in an otherwise somewhat southern state. I do know a few consider the whole state midwestern due to being parallel with Missouri, as well as southern Indiana and southern Illinois.

Fun thread. I'm still so psyched about this ASUN move that I wish Bellarmine could go ahead and join for this coming season.

As far as potential rivalries, I could see BU having something with Lipscomb (closest conference mate/presumed travel partner), Liberty (not totally sure why -- maybe just for being another private school and a familiar name), and North Alabama (just for having joined the conference around the same time). I suppose time will tell and, for hoops at least, the biggest rival may very well be one which develops on the hardwood.

UNF and JU need to be this game, it's an old rivalry between two schools in the same city.

And I agree, UNA vs KSU would make sense, but in a way so would UNA vs Lipscomb just 2hrs apart. But traditionally UNA has always had a rival in Florida, used to be West Florida in the old days, but I would not mind FGCU being that school.
