We had enough WR and DE play to beat VT. I don't see where we even have that next year.

Of course, after the next two losses, we can see what kind of freshmen we have so that may be worth watching.

We have averaged 125 in the recruiting ranks for 4 years. This could be a long 4 years if we have the same coordinators

Makes sense. When you finish next to last in recruiting for several years in a row eventually that’s going to reveal itself in actual game play and season rankings. Next year is going to really hurt unless our true freshman are the best we’ve ever had. We need some transfers or something. It’s worked for FAU and UAB.

I find it interesting our offense can get over 500 yards and still lose.

It's the same problem we've always had. Can someone enlighten me, have we ever had a year where our defense wasn't a liability?

I read the comments about poor recruiting and you have to agree the rankings are dismal. But with that said I rarely feel like the players are all that out classed on the field. We do have quite a few quality players and it always seems the problem is in game planning, lack of imagination, poor to no half time adjustments and poor defensive discipline and schemes. Last night even AJ Hawk was questioning why we play so soft.

Bad coaches can look like geniuses when you have good talent. Bad coaches and marginal at best FBS talent gets you 1-11 to 3-9 seasons in a horrible football conference.

It’s interesting to ponder we have only played two home games out of a total of six. That is a tremendous amount of time on the road. Our last four out of six remaining games are at home. I’m expecting us to at least split the last six games.

Right. Those 16 hour flights to Lynchburg, Greenville and Charlotte are killers.

Don't be bitter now and the home team wins about 60%.

RE: Game 6: ODU @ FAU
It feels like the FCS days with all offense and no defense, except we are not getting the wins this time around. If your offense puts up 35 and 33 points on the road in back to back weeks, you’d think you picked up two wins. Sadly, it just hasn’t been the case this season. Blowing the lead to FIU, letting Charlotte look respectable, giving up 37 points to an ECU team that doesn’t have a sound offense, and then bookending those games with two games of 50+ points allowed just isn’t going to cut it. It really is odd looking at the 1-5 record, thinking it’s possible we could have been sitting at 6-0. I really feel bad for our players because I know they are giving it their best. Thankfully, we’ve got a home game stretch coming up, and I hope these kids get a good crowd, because they feed off of the fans. The 12th Monarchs could really be a difference maker, as silly as that sounds.

It doesn't matter what kind of defensive scheme you run or who the coach is! Bottom line is if you have players that don't know how to tackle properly your defense can't do the job. ODU has never recruited fundamentally sound defensive players. They always try to tackle from the side by reaching in with their arms. Not often do you actually see an ODU player put their shoulder into the gut of the ball carrier to make the tackle. If you are standing waiting for the ball carrier to come to you and move to the side and try to stop him with your arms, he wins every time!

Afrer the VT game I had high hopes that if we came back with at least one win on this road stretch that we would have a respectable home field for Marshall. I doubt that will happen now. I'll still be there but I wouldn't doubt that we have an unspectacular crown this Saturday. I hope I'm wrong

Gnar - you are a recent graduate, right? What's your take on how the students feel about cusa teams? Are there any that will draw attendance no matter how bad we are? Or is there a general ambivalence to all conference opponents in football especially when we are struggling to win?

I graduated in 09 (might be obvious, might not) and I would think WKU and Marshall would be a good draw, maybe MTSU too, but admittedly I have no clue how students feel.

Outside of us posters on here I don't think fans care about Marshall. 100s of tickets on stubhub over the weekend for under $10 for the game.

Those are the tickets being sold by VT fans who bought season tickets.

We ranked 80th in 2016 in S&P and 77 in 2017. Thats not great, but its a non embarrassing CUSA defense that can win games if your offense is good. We have never been good at stopping the run, but we had a secondary that did well on passing downs and a front 4 that causes havoc (tackles for loss/sacks). That gave me hope for this year because we brought almost everyone back in the secondary.

Yes, I attended ODU between 2009-2015. I was there for the end of the CAA days and the beginning of the CUSA days. Obviously, there was history and familiarity with the CAA schools that carried over from year to year with students, but once we moved up it felt different. While causal college football fans may have heard of Marshall (especially because of the movie), WKU and MTSU are different. WKU and Marshall have attracted some great student turnouts for basketball, but MTSU is a toss-up. We had a great football crowd for the infamous MTSU white-out game, but I don't know how engaged the students are with them as whole, especially after I graduated. To me, our 5-25 year followed up by a change in conference really killed student interest for CUSA because not many showed up to basketball games that following year, and football always had terrible student engagement especially after Heinicke left. I'm sure if ODU had been dominating the last few years and have had winning records in football it would be different, but we'll see how it turns out. I feel like the casual ODU student doesn't really follow or keep up with ODU sports or CUSA like students from other schools do. I was talking to a friend a couple of years ago and he thought ODU basketball was doing terrible while they were killing it. Maybe that has changed, maybe it hasn't. I just think students at ODU don't really care for sports as much as they used to.

EDIT: Being on these boards sometimes makes me feel like ODU fans are engaged with all things ODU sports but I realize that we are the die-hards that follow the team even into the depths of hell. There are some people that think ODU is D2 out there. When we went to the NIT a few years ago, people were shocked when I said ODU basketball won 27 games that year. It is encouraging seeing student run accounts like Old Row ODU and ODU Barstool post weekly about our football team and opponents but I don't think that is the rule, rather the exception

That's something that doesn't get talked about much on these boards, but I wonder if the student disengagement issue is something you can observe across the board. Football attendance has dropped pretty much everywhere, and while they're only a fraction of that, it may just be that today's students don't care as much about college sports in general, or at least care about live-event attendance. Too many options competing for limited time (see also network TV ratings -- The Big Bang Theory was the top show in the 2016-17 season at 11.5, but 20 years prior those numbers barely get you in the top 20, and 30 years ago they wouldn't even be in sniffing distance of the top 30).

Student attendance has been declining since 2009 in Div 1 football.
Nick Saban went off on that subject at Alabama recently.
It is a huge concern as apathetic students could become disengaged alumni, and donors or lack thereof.

On a positive note, the combo of Strong, Knight, and Davis is going to be pretty damn good next year.
