RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
I think it's fair to say that Tulane is better than Ohio. This will be a good test for us. We played a tight one in nawlins last year, as we did with UConn last year. Let's see how much better we are this time.

I have noticed. Combination of this is Year 2 and he is more familiar with roles, players, systems, etc., and a 5-0 record obviously helps.
Polishing his press conference skills for a P5 audition. Sorry, couldn't help myself.
He's doing a fine job and it very exciting to see UC football climbing back into the spotlight locally.

I hope he gets P5 interviews this year. It would mean that we won 11-12 games. After last year's dismal performance, I don't think he gets big time interviews without 11-12 wins.

I think it will be another year or two before they come calling. His buyout until 12/13/18 is $3M, but does drop to $2.5M on 1/19. That is a lot of money for a school to pay-- especially when you consider the schools with coaches on the hot seat right now have to buy out their coaches contracts as well (ex. Lovie Smith who is on the hot seat at Illinois is owed somewhere in the neighborhood of $5-6M per an article written recently ).

Money talks, but part of me finds it hard to believe Fickell would consider a job at a perennial Big 10 bottom feeder. The guy played against those schools, and coached against them for about two decades. He can't have warm and fuzzy feelings about a lot of Big 10 programs, and likely knows how big a mountain it is to turn a place like Illinois around.

As we've said before, if he gets courted by P5 programs then that means he was successful here. That said, I hope we get at least 2 more seasons outta BDF. Who knows, maybe we'll strike lightning in a bottle (ala Huggs) and he wants to coach here for as long as possible.

The one thing that is a bit different with Fickell is the fact that he has never left Ohio and the size of his family.
Moving one or two kids isn't terrible...moving 6 in three different levels of school multiple times would drastically affect their development. Honestly, the Catholic school system here may be a plus too, as incredibly weird as that sounds.

Can we stop worrying about our coach leaving halfway through year 2 of a rebuild, in which the team is exceeding expectations? Let's just enjoy what we've got, if he leaves, he leaves, and hopefully it's more like CBJ than CBK.

Yeah. It's way early.
I think it'll be interesting to see what we do for the rest of the season.
Next year - when a good chunk of Tubs guys leave will be interesting too. Our OL & DL will be almost entirely made over. Big hurdle to overcome.
We're a long way from CLF jumping elsewhere.

What does everyone think the max UC could spend to keep Fick, if he starts looking elsewhere? Obviously we are never going to be able to compete against schools like Alabama and OSU. But how about IU, Minnesota, Virgina, etc. ? Could we afford $4mil a year? And double his salary?
