Clemson's Kelly Bryant is a prime example. Story Link.
I believe SW sees the writing on the wall and is using this rule for a potential move to another school. After the way he was yanked in favor of Larussa in the VT game, I believe he sees his career over at ODU.
Two different situations. Bryant is graduating, so he won’t have to sit. He is using the rule to extend his eligibility.
If Williams leaves (and I am not saying he will, I just don’t think he’ll stay because Blake would be the 1 going into the spring and the new guys will challenge) he will have to sit out a year. If he “redshirts” this year, he would lose a year of eligibility on transfer.
Hold on. If he's officially redshirted, how would he lose that year if he transferred? I'll admit I never read the rule in its' entirety.
If Williams stay at ODU, he could play the next 3 years. If he redshirts this year and then transfers, he will likely have to sit out next year and then have 3 years to play at the new school.
Wait. How does he get 2 redshirt years?

Williams, hypothetically, faking an injury.......maybe the NCAA would grant him an additional year.

I meant 2 years. This would be his redshirt year and he'd have to sit out next year. Unless there was some type of waiver. You only get 5 years to play 4 seasons....unless you are that Western Kentucky QB.
If I'm understanding this (spoiler: I'm probably not), then the 4-game redshirt rule doesn't really affect SW if he transfers. Either this is his redshirt year, he loses next year when he goes to his new school (unless he transfers to a D2 or D3 school) and then has two seasons of eligibility left, or he plays out this season, transfers, uses his redshirt next season when he's sitting out, then has two seasons of eligibility left.
Does that sound like I'm in the ballpark?
Note: I don't think SW transfers because of taking the redshirt this season. He seems very committed to the program and so long as he stays healthy, at the very least he's got a leg up on the 2020 starting job, if he doesn't beat LaRussa for it in 2019. Plus I wonder if there's a backlash possible for players who leave because they feel they can't compete, a red flag for prospective coaches who wonder if they'll ghost on them if the going gets tough. This redshirt rule is a work in progress and I've got no doubt that it'll be modified in the years ahead.

Basically. Though, he can also transfer to an FCS school and not lose any time.

I believe you are correct and I think thats what the other guy meant when he said he loses a year.
I don't think most coaches think like that. They are lining up for Bryant right now, I believe.
Looking from the outside, I would think staying would be the best move.

I'm a BL homer but there is no way he stays healthy with 7 games left. TV doesn't show it but BL gets hit just about every other play. Could have been a few more roughing the passer calls Saturday but he keeps popping up.

Don't they still, though? I thought Bentley sat out a year when he transferred to Tennessee-Whatever.

Shuler was a grad transfer. It doesn't seem like it, but he was here for 3 seasons (redshirted in 2014, played in 2015 and 2016). So he could have gone to another FBS without sitting, if he had wanted to. He's a 5th year senior this season.
But yeah, FBS to FCS transfer rules don't require a player to sit out. This link goes through all the rules and states them pretty simply.

I sit corrected. In my mind, Bentley transferred after 2015, not 2016.
Also, I think I got him confused with Birdsong, who went from JMU to Marshall to Tennessee Tech.

I prefer Tennessee-whatever. We should just start calling every FCS school this.

Now that we have fleshed this out, it does not seem that his intention is to transfer. Why would he redshirt this year if he has nothing to gain from it, which would be the case if he reshirted this year then transferred. Unless we are missing something on the rule. I am still not completely convinced that there is not some waiver the NCAA is going to give these guys to be eligible next year.

Get this DA is nearing completing his degree and could be eligible for transfer after spring graduation. If SW and DA jump ship we are left with BL, walkon redshirt freshman and a newly arriving QB for next season.

You gotta figure DA is gone. Not so sure about SW yet. But if it did happen, it would be the time to bring in a grad transfer.

There isn’t.
The NCAA is more likely to extend a clock then to waive a residence requirement

I somehow doubt anyone is going to be knocking anything over to get to either of those two. Not sure either would get a scholly to Tennessee-whatever.

Not knowing much about Drayton Arnold, but SW would at least get an FCS scholarship somewhere. Which again, I don't think is a reasonable result unless he's really upset or it becomes obvious that the other QBs will soon pass him. He's definitely going to be in the mix in 2020, and if he improves or LaRussa retrogrades, who's to say he won't fight for the job next season? The coaches obviously are high on him, and if LaRussa didn't throw for 14 miles against the Hokies, SW is probably still in the discussion.

No coach has seen Drayton Arnold play, but I would assume some teams would see his recruiting ranking at take a chance either way.
Teams would line up for SW. An 19 year old with starting experience that has all the physical tools you look for and a great attitude. Not saying P5, but probably a few G5s and he could certainly walk into FCS schools and start right away.

Doesn't matter a bit about Quarterbacks until we improve our offensive line situation. Big mobile offensive lineman should be our #1 priority moving forward. Give a guy time to operate and you can turn a lot of Qb's into outstanding ones.
