RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
Tulane has come a long way under Coach Fritz. We can't afford to lose to Tulane because their national reputation as a football power is ZERO. That's why Ohio $tate scheduled them. O$U has played Oregon State, Rutgers and Tulane. That's because Kansas, UTEP and San Jose State were unavailable.

In light of Campbell's injury, I'm curious about the depth chart. I can only find one from prior to the season (the media guide from last week still has Hayden Moore listed as the co-starter). I'm assuming that Jakari Robinson gets the start this week?

There's plenty to question about Ohio State, but their scheduling is not one of them. An OOC of TCU, Oregon State, and Tulane is better than many of their P5 brethren.

Jakari Robinson likely gets the start. There was a lot of rumblings in the offseason that Robinson looked like a guy who would anchor the line for multiple years. I remember there was a lot of buzz with his development his redshirt year. Hopefully that is all true.

Campbell's ankle is broken. Robinson is your new starter.

Bingo. Ohio State operates under the same schedule every year. One big time top 20 type match up, (granted with how far out these games are scheduled it does not always work out) a MAC school, and two G5 teams.

People have already voiced how disappointed they are that Cincinnati is their "big" OOC match up next year since Jerry's World bought out the TCU game. It's not a slight against UC, but OSU fans expect a game against a top brand each year. TCU was replaced with Miami U next year.

Well said. A loss to any of the five UC has beaten would have brought forth the naysayers before October 1. And after OSU thrashed the Green Wave it won't look good losing to them. That, in spite of the fact that they manhandled a pretty decent Memphis team last week. This is still a young UC team that may lose one we don't expect, and then suprise a top tier AAC team before this season is done. All the same, let's go 6-0 and worry about next week, next week.

Before we elevate Tulane too much let's compare a few stats:

Sagarin Rating
Cincy #60
Tulane #80
(Temple is ranked #69 FWIW)

PPG
Cincy #37
Tulane #95
(Ohio #17)

YPG
Cincy #58
Tulane #72
(Ohio #19)

TOP
Cincy #29
Tulane #28
(Ohio #15/Army #1/Navy #2)

Opponents PPG
Cincy #4
Tulane #86
(Temple #68)

Again, you can lose on any given week but I see this similar to any game we've played thus far with the exception of UCLA: on paper we win unless we beat ourselves. This is at home during homecoming as well.

Not sure how much 'hand wringing' is going on, rather just trying to point out the merits of our opponents. The truth is we don't quite know exactly how good we are at this point through 5 games. Part of that is due to one of the key statistics you didn't mention:

SOS (Sagarin)
Cincinnati: 149
Tulane: 41

So it's still difficult to really figure out how we are relative to our competition given how weak the schedule has been to date. But no doubt we are a much better team than we were last year, at a minimum.

I didn't highlight SOS since that is one part of the formula for the overall Sagarin rank of which UC is 20 points better. All I'm saying is every week I read posts that question how good we are and are we for real yet. Not saying that about you specifically but we have seen enough of this team to know what their strengths/weaknesses are and they have answered the bell 5 games in a row. I'm sorry but a 2-3 Tulane team at home is not one to wonder if we can win this game or not or if we are real enough to win it. At Temple, USF, @UCF then I'm on board with those will be difficult games based on metrics and the tale of the tape.

At this point in the season I know what my eyes tell me. We have a stout defense that is light years ahead of last years club. The offense seems to be getting more balanced by the week. We have shown we can throw the ball as well as run with a dual threat QB and a grinding RB that makes 5 yards seemingly everytime he touches the ball. Added bonus: Wide Receivers are actually hanging onto the ball this year!

If anything needs to be cleared up- it’s stupid penalties on the defensive side of the ball. Questions I have? Depth on the O line and how good our FG guy is bc we go for it on fourth down way more than I have ever remembered.

I am actually shocked at what a turnaround we have displayed so far and feel we are definitely ahead of schedule.

Tulane's Memphis performance was incredibly impressive

I saw quite a bit of that game too and agree. I'm guessing we'll now say Tulane will be the best team we've played so far? And I think we'd be right about that.

For whatever reason, I felt UC under-performed against a solid, but not spectacular, OU squad. I believe UC shows up ready this Saturday as they have much to play for: homecoming game, clinching bowl eligibility, first place in the AAC and knocking on the door of a top 25 ranking for the first time in a long time.

On a personal note, we're flying to the west coast Saturday morning. I hate missing homecoming, but the noon kickoff means I'll also miss most of the broadcast too. I'm counting on the rest of the Bearcat Banter crowd to follow my late grandfather's admonition. Whenever anyone was headed to a game, he'd always say, "bring home a winner". Go 'Cats!

I will be at work and unable to follow along. I am new member on the board, but have been reading regularly for the last few months. Nearly every day.

Great, great, great football conversation.

If anyone remembers when you’re posting on the game thread, can you throw out the score. I really enjoy reading through the thread afterwards and reading a score now and then with the comments would really add to the context.

RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
An article from NOLA.com...

Quote:Tulane finds renewed sense of belief with Cincinnati next on the schedule

The football players lifted Willie Fritz above their heads and let the coach crowd surf around the Tulane locker room. He pulled the white cap with the angry wave logo off his head and pumped his fist.

This was a moment worth celebrating. After a month of frustrations, the Green Wave had finally won a meaningful game. They did it convincingly, too.

Tulane came into the game with a 1-3 non-conference record and a two-touchdown underdog to a Memphis team labeled as the preseason favorite to make a return trip to the American Athletic Conference championship game.

The Green Wave came out as winners by a 40-24 score with renewed optimism for what's to come. Which, at this point, is most important.

Tulane (2-3 overall, 1-0 AAC) will play 11 a.m. Saturday against another favored opponent, with undefeated Cincinnati (5-0, 1-0) being given a seven-point advantage by bookmakers.

No longer is Fritz having to remind his players to stay the course, to seek sources of motivation for a team that appeared on the brink of a lost season. Suddenly, with this win, the third-year Tulane coach has a squad hardened by early-season failures with a renewed sense of belief in the long-term goal.

"It's a good learning process," said Fritz, who asked his players this week to prepare the same way they did last week.

"We got to turn the page," he said. "Move on to the next game."

Tulane came into the season talking about getting the six wins needed to achieve bowl eligibility, something it missed last season with a goal-line stop on the final play of a season-ending loss at SMU.

This season, Tulane failed to make winning plays in two games in which it was tied in the fourth quarter against Wake Forest and Alabama-Birmingham, all before a lopsided loss at No. 4 Ohio State.

That put the Green Wave in need of five wins over the final eight games if they are to play in a bowl game for only the second time since 2002, the first since 2013. They earned the first win Friday, which by now feels like it was "a month ago," Fritz said Tuesday.

Tulane players now are no longer talking about getting those six wins. Each week, to them, is a one-game playoff with limited chances for additional setbacks. Get enough of those, they figure, and those bowl hopes will become reality.

Fritz described Cincinnati as a ball-control kind of team with a good running game. The Bearcats on defense are ranked seventh in the country in total yards allowed per game. Included in their five wins is an impressive, season-opening victory at UCLA. The Bearcats last week won their conference opener by beating UConn 49-7.

"We've just got to get bodies on bodies," Fritz said about how the Tulane offense can score against the high-ranked Cincinnati defense.

Against Memphis, Tulane didn't have many negative plays on first and second downs, Fritz said, which contributed to the 10-of-17 conversion rate on third downs.

Tulane on defense posted seven sacks, which was more than the six sacks the Green Wave tallied in the previous four games combined.

Cincinnati has an on-campus stadium and typically draws more than 30,000 fans for home games.

"This will be the first time I've played in this stadium," Fritz said. "But I've had some friends who have played up there and said it's a heck of an environment. That should motivate us to play well."

Tulane Believes

For anyone who is interested, here a link to Tulane's biggest fan message board. Obviously they are riding high off the Memphis win and see this as a winnable game. They are having an alumni event at the game, and so far it appears there are 3 people signed up (two of whom who live in Greater Cincinnati).

Isn't the strength of schedule argument a bit skewed by the fact that Tulane got clobbered 49-6 by Ohio State who is ranked 3rd in the country? I'm not sure what you get out of that besides that fact that they ponied themselves up as the sacrificial lambs for one game. Their other 3 games have been against Nicholls State, a loss to a UAB team that just got its program back like 6 weeks ago and a good win against Memphis on a Friday night. I don't think what they've done with their schedule is anymore impressive than we have done with ours.

RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
Going down memory lane... there was a game against Tulane, seems like 20 years ago or longer. In New Orleans, at the Superdome. I think Rick Minter was the UC coach.

I hope that someone can help my memory and fill in details.

Tulane won that game on a walk off field goal. At the last second, Tulane walked in a "special" football that they had cleared with the refs in advance. It didn't look much like a "football" unless you are in the Premiere League. I remember there was some hubbub about it for a few days after the game, and I think some game ball practices were changed as a result.

Does someone have memory and the rest of the scoop on that?

Is it me or does BDF seem way more confident in his press conferences? We’re doing everything better this year.

I have noticed. Combination of this is Year 2 and he is more familiar with roles, players, systems, etc., and a 5-0 record obviously helps.
