Exclamation WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
First conference game at home and homecoming. Right now the line is Tulane 7 to 7.5 dogs. I just don't see the Cats not winning this game. Again, not cocky but confident in our abilities to take care of business. Of course, I'll take a win by one point but we are riding a momentum wave right now that should result in a convincing win. Can't wait for Saturday!

RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
The Tulane option offense is a bit of a worry, if nothing else because it's not the easiest to prepare for. But we're at home and it's homecoming. If you can't get geeked up for this game, then it just isn't happening.

I'm guessing that UC wins this game, but it may not be as...comfortable...a margin. Tulane should come to play, but UC should come away with the win.

Tulane beat Memphis into the ground, and were up 40 - 14 at one point. I'm not as confident about this game as I was last week, but I still think we will win.

UC has two things going for them this year: talent and coaching. I'm confident the UC coaches will prepare the Bearcats for Tulane and that we have the talent to win. My only concern is the players getting over confident. I see 2-3 losses in the future but this should be a win.

I saw quite a bit of that game too and agree. I'm guessing we'll now say Tulane will be the best team we've played so far? And I think we'd be right about that.

For whatever reason, I felt UC under-performed against a solid, but not spectacular, OU squad. I believe UC shows up ready this Saturday as they have much to play for: homecoming game, clinching bowl eligibility, first place in the AAC and knocking on the door of a top 25 ranking for the first time in a long time.

On a personal note, we're flying to the west coast Saturday morning. I hate missing homecoming, but the noon kickoff means I'll also miss most of the broadcast too. I'm counting on the rest of the Bearcat Banter crowd to follow my late grandfather's admonition. Whenever anyone was headed to a game, he'd always say, "bring home a winner". Go 'Cats!

Agreed, and I'll add a third thing to your talent and coaching: confidence. And I agree that overconfidence then becomes a risk. Here's hoping Fickell and staff keep them well grounded. And cleaning up the excessive penalties, especially personal fouls, would be welcome progress Saturday.

It's a minor challenge to get my head around "Tulane may be our toughest opponent thus far." I think a lot of us had written off Tulane as an also ran this year. Did not expect them to dominate Memphis - especially after the OSU beatdown.

Once again, this is what is great about college football. You gotta do it on the field. What the commentators say doesn't matter (expect to make some fans mad.)

I'm nervous. First loss would be a lot easier to swallow on the road.

Maybe I am just different, but I actually knew that Tulane was going to be tough this year. They were 5-7 last year, and could have easily had 7-8 wins (they lost to us by 1, Navy by 2, USF and SMU by 3). They return 9 starters on offense last year, including their stud QB Jonathan Banks and their two best WR's. Willie Fritz is one of the best coaches in the league and had been successful everywhere he has run this system.

They key to beating them is simple in theory: run the football on them and stop their ground game. Of course that is easier said than done. They don't run the pure triple option like Navy, but IMHO their hybrid, zone option, multiple-look offense is even more dangerous because you have to pick your poison. You shut one aspect of the game down you have to worry about the other. Tulane is rushing 204 yards per game led by Darius Bradwell, Corey Dauphine (a Texas Tech transfer who is averaging 10 yards a carry and has 5 TDs) and Banks. Their best two WR's average 18 yards a catch.

Tulane shut down Memphis' ground game, holding them to just 31 yards. Memphis has some pretty good backs so that is quite impressive. That being said UAB was able to run on this team so it is not unheard of. Tulane's secondary was expected to be the strength of their defense, but it looks like teams have been able to throw the ball on them (Wake Forest threw for 378 yards).

UC is going to need to do what they've been doing all year: run the ball behind Mike Warren and Co. and continue to pick their spots throwing the ball to its usual suspects: Deguara, Lewis, Geddis, Maderis, et al.

I'm with you. I thought they'd be a middle of the league team and likely a difficult game. I don't agree that they are tougher to defend than Navy. Navy is just unbelievable at running the triple option, but they are better on defense than Navy. I'm certainly not taking this week for granted, thought at Nippert, I expect UC to win.

Tulane's Memphis performance was incredibly impressive

Until you see that South Alabama also dropped 467 yards of offense and 35 points on Memphis.

Honestly, I don't know what to think, but I'm cautiously optimistic of at least a 10 point win. But if I was any good @ football predictions, (which I'm not,) I'd be in Vegas gambling every week.

Last year after we got destroyed by Navy's triple option attack we then went on to hold Tulane in check. They had less than 150 yards on the ground but did throw for around 200 yards (they had a WR IIRC that hurt us pretty bad).

Looking at the stats this year, it doesn't appear that Banks has been successful running the ball. And he's only a 50% passer. But the threat of him running/passing has really opened up the running game for the RBs who have great numbers so far. We'll definitely have to limit the big plays and make them earn their yards little by little.

RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
Some of you guys seem to hand wring over who we play every week. I say that in jest but when are you going to accept that we have a pretty good team right now and it's the other teams that are worrying about how to play a solid, physical running team with a damn good defense that is UC? Before we elevate Tulane too much let's compare a few stats:

Sagarin Rating
Cincy #60
Tulane #80
(Temple is ranked #69 FWIW)

PPG
Cincy #37
Tulane #95
(Ohio #17)

YPG
Cincy #58
Tulane #72
(Ohio #19)

TOP
Cincy #29
Tulane #28
(Ohio #15/Army #1/Navy #2)

Opponents PPG
Cincy #4
Tulane #86
(Temple #68)

Again, you can lose on any given week but I see this similar to any game we've played thus far with the exception of UCLA: on paper we win unless we beat ourselves. This is at home during homecoming as well.

I'll add this too - say what you will about our opponents, Tulane hasn't beaten anyone with a pulse and hasn't won on the road (albeit Ohio State). Memphis is struggling at 3-2 (beat 1 FCS/2 bad Fun Belt teams).

Not sure how much 'hand wringing' is going on, rather just trying to point out the merits of our opponents. The truth is we don't quite know exactly how good we are at this point through 5 games. Part of that is due to one of the key statistics you didn't mention:

SOS (Sagarin)
Cincinnati: 149
Tulane: 41

So it's still difficult to really figure out how we are relative to our competition given how weak the schedule has been to date. But no doubt we are a much better team than we were last year, at a minimum.

Memphis is good. That Wake game could have gone either way. As could the UAB game.

Exactly right. It's not a knock on UC to say that Tulane could be a challenging game. They are better than Ohio and we nearly lost that game. I think we'll win at Nippert but I think Tulane is a real test.

RE: WEEK SIX: Tulane Talk
Here’s some Tulane Questions:
There’s a lot of history between the Bearcats and the Green Wave:
First game was in 1909 and The Greenies lead the series 11-5.
How come the last three games (C-USA and AAC) were all played in New Orleans?
How come these Tulane football players (all are All-Americans or NFL players) have funny names:
Dub Jones, Bubby Brister, Lester Lautenschlager, Brother Brown, and
Peggy Flournoy?
How come Tulane left the SEC in 1966? How much money did they get for leaving?
