Sidenote: That awesome Liberty team that we saw has scored a grand total of 21 points total since they dropped 52 on us.

Let's face it, they aren't good. We just pooped the bed in that one.

Now let's enjoy what happened on Saturday and ride is as a step up.

And this just in. North Texas is handling their business. We have a few games left to get ourselves ready to match that.

It absolutely blows my mind that we have some butthurt fans on here after our most historic win in football, and easily Top 5 of all ODU sports. Are we finally seeing who the troll posters are?

I loved Wilders quote from the broadcast when they were talking to him on the field just after the win:

“Hey Monarch Nation, how ‘bout them Monarchs!”

He knew the negativity that was thrown at him, what’s up now? Haha.

I was one ready for a change, I’ll admit it. But I like Wilder and am rooting for him for sure.

He definitely knew that and he also said "With this win he will get WS and Broderick on his side" which i am sure he got form that win. While i admit i was quick to judge him after that Liberty loss i will wait a little longer before i believe in him and his crew again but that VT game sure did change some non believers.

Some fans would rather be “right” than have a win.

I did lol off the “how bout ya Monarchs”. So cheesy but I love it. Wilder is a great representative of out University and a very successful coach.

We all will continue to want more, however, most people are impressed off:

Would take years to get a winning team
Then he couldnt win in the CAA-wrong
Then couldn’t win in FBS- wrong
Then couldnt win vs a P5- wrong

RE: Extend Bobby Wilder Thread
I’ll state my opinion again for the record. My opinion has always been about getting embarrassed. I was tired/still tired of getting embarrassed, blown out, and run off the field. Too many times that has happened under BW. 15 of 26 losses have been my more that 21 pts. That truly is unacceptable. Where I always fell shot with BW was when he didn’t seem like he could adjust to prevent a blowout. For example earlier this year ODU was up 17-0 over FIU, then Butch Davis made adjustments. Why can’t BW ever seem to adjust and climb out of a hole. I’ll give BW all the credit in the world for the VT win but in some ways he got lucky because his game plan worked exactly to perfection and BL played out of his mind. If BW had to make major in game adjustments would we be talking about a VT win, I’m not sure. BW deserves more time with ODU but I don’t think any other coach has proved it yet. String together a few wins and we can talk again.

Wilder outcoached VT. It was the most amazing sporting event I have ever attended - and I’m sure that has bought him at least two more years. Hopefully, we build on the victory and gain another historic victory at ECU. Our fan base will and should erupt with ecstasy again if we beat ECU.

But the bottom line is our football team needs to be a perennial winner. This game/win will be remembered and be a source of pride for decades. However, we need to be bowl eligible year in and year out. Anything less is unacceptable.

RE: Extend Bobby Wilder Thread
Here's my opinion, and it doesn't matter. But you'll read it anyway (right?), so I appreciate you.

This is now a historic season for us. Even if we finish 1-11 (yes, that includes an FCS loss) then it's still a historic season. This victory just gave us the most exposure for our school possibly ever - given our day and age and how people consume information.

What will we do with it? I'd like to compare it to basketball since that's my first love and all I know.

I compare this victory to the final four runs of VCU and GMU. The difference is they received national exposure for weeks rather than A week, but national exposure all the same. VCU capitalized on their exposure and vaulted into a perennial top mid major team from then on. GMU... not quite so much. So what will we be? How will we capitalize on the exposure?

1. We've already seen donation emails sent out to ODAF members. Personally I wasn't too fond of it but I get it, and if it works for some then it works. Point is, they did something at least and they did it quickly.
2. Apparently there were notes sent out to high school students? I saw from an earlier post describing what happened with the game and what it means for the university. Cool.
3. Bobby Wilder appears to be saying "yes to all" as far as any media appearances, which is great. Saw a tweet this morning that someone from NYC heard him on ESNPU. It's Thursday.
4. Hopefully the admin will now use the 757 as a branding tool for the school. That would be pretty huge as it's become apparent that knowledgeable fans from across the country know this area code.

Circling back to the thread subject, with this kind of exposure you could say the season is already a success. Bobby definitely bought himself at least another year, in my not so educated opinion, regardless of our final record. However, let's see how we finish and if we can carry this kind of national momentum with us! If we fizzle out to 1-11 I dare say it was a wasted opportunity. If we can somehow win 5 more games and get to a bowl, then the media attention is multiplied based on our earlier exposure from Saturday's result.

Lastly, I will admit I was wrong about Bobby. I really do like Bobby as a coach, with his demeanor and the way he carries the ODU brand, and I root for him, but I was in the camp that he was in over his FBS head. This win proves he is not. However, he still needs to compete for the rest of the season, not just for the biggest name on the schedule. I'm looking forward to how the rest of the season shakes out. We are no longer going to be overlooked no matter what our record is.

Love the play call on the Blake LaRussa touchdown. Blake could have walked into the endzone.

RE: Extend Bobby Wilder Thread
The effect of the game might not even be realized for several years. I had never heard of App STate before they beat Michigan and not that game is all I think about when I hear App State. There are recruits all over the country (and younger kids) that will grow up associating Old Dominion with a win over Virginia Tech. They will know that ODU has a football team.

Winning a bowl game is great. Winning the conference is great. Winning 9 games is great. What ODU did on Saturday will have a much larger impact than anything FAU has done (for example) over the past year.

Even if we lose several more games.

I agree but App State has continued that run. Every year they are in a dog fight with a top team and people respect the hell out of them. Its super rare for them to get run off the field or get embarrassed. They have a good coaches, facilities and recruiting. If we can get those 3 things and take out a few more P5 teams over the next few years we might have something. But it starts with finishing this season and finalizing this recruiting class.

Can't disagree there. When the Michigan loss is mentioned, they don't mention that App State was in the midst of winning multiple FCS titles, or that they had an NFL athlete at QB. And they don't talk about how that Michigan team performed the rest of the season.

They talk about the dynamics of that game and that game alone.

BTW, if you're looking for the spat between Monarchs, in the immediate week after our first win over a P5 and our first win over an FBS top 25, it's on the smack board.

Thanks to every fan who stood behind this team despite a demoralizing 0-3 start. This outstanding victory is yours and you deserve it.
Sticking with the team and coaching staff through bad times takes guts and I salute you.

Some of the criticism of Coach Wilder was downright abusive. But thankfully, Coach gets the last laugh. How 'Bout Them Monarchs!?!

Now if Dr. Selig could begin drafting a lifetime contract for Coach Wilder that'd be great. Who better to lead and sell this program than the one who started it.

RE: Extend Bobby Wilder Thread
Personal attacks aside, the criticism of the coach and team for the first 3 games was earned, and as far as on the field performance goes, I think the players and coaches would agree.

The fact that we beat #13 Virginia Tech confirms even further that the first 3 games were horrible underperformances.

Now let's ride this wave as far as we can go, beat ECU, get to a Bowl Game, and grab some of VT's recruits.

Everything this season will focus on VT win. I LOVED it just as much as everyone, but with perspective, let's see how VT ends their own season
