Lol. Everyone is at the beach in the summer. They drew 200 or so a game. Let Huntsville spend 65 million for minor league dreams

Best option for Mobile right now is once South is done with Ladd, close it. Year prior to that start the repurposing of The Hank as a multi use facility to be able to host baseball, as well as football and soccer, it really wouldn’t be that hard to do.

Then whatever football games are left, move them to the OCS, move all high school and potential soccer and minor league football to the new Hank.

Local news reporting Ladd is planning to charge DG Bowl $20k in rent. Bowl has been playing rent free. The Ladd Board is mailing the contract next week.

This should be interesting....

As the saying goes, "A million here, a million there, and pretty soon you are talking about real money".

The $900,000 is probably worth it but it is politically difficult because the huge number of people think almost a million dollars is a lot of money. USA probably spends more than a half million a day on salaries before fringe benefits and payroll taxes.

It's just not that big of a number but the bowl is going to need to find a way to get their expenses down or find new revenue because $900,000 is a hard sell to taxpayers.

You're correct about perception. The thought of partnering with USA by contributing $500,000 year to their stadium sent folks into a frenzy because it seemed like a huge number to them and they lack the vision to see the financial gains down the road. It's similar to people that can't get their minds around evolution because they can't comprehend how long a billion years truly is.

There were only 7 people that voted, some with knowing disregard of their constituents. Political favors and agenda were the deciding factors. Evolution, creation, and/or aliens had nothing to do with it. JMO

But they could justify their no votes by claiming to be fiscal hawks (like Williams did). People seeing $500,000 annually on the line thought it made sense without looking more deeply and understanding the long-term benefits. The evolution reference was just an analogy, not an explanation.

I think other cities were about to start new bowls before the NCAA put a moratorium on them IIRC. If one goes away I am sure they will allow one to replace it so the conference keeps the same amount of tie ins. I think Charleston was interested.

Right. I understood the analogy, but my point was it didn't matter what anyone thought. Of the 4 "no" votes, one maybe two could be justified. The others voted the way they did for self serving reasons. My representative voted no as a personal favor to her friend, despite the economic impact to her district. It had nothing to do with what "folks" like me thought, or whether we (or she) could comprehend big numbers. Williams could argue either side. Rich had no excuse.

I've withheld a portion of my stadium donation in anticipation of her re-election campaign, if she decides to run again.

Doesn’t solve the fact that sponsorship dollars are dwindling. When those other cities were wanting a bowl, there was more sponsorship money. It will be interesting to see how many cities are still lining up for a bowl. Problem is old ideas die hard, cities will still want them, but they may be short lived when the revenue isn’t there.

Is the Senior Bowl staying in Mobile given the stadium situation?

Well not everything has to make money now to help make money overall nor does taking a small loss on the bowl mean the city still does not make a profit. It is not just simply a did we make a profit today or the specific balance sheet for the bowl game type of thing and is what I think the one councilman was hinting at. I think destination cities like Mobile or Charleston, Myrtle Beach etc have to think bigger picture and maybe think of bowls as maybe slight loss leader in exposing hopefully 20-30K of fans attending and hopefully hundreds of thousands watching to your city. Moving the game date probably had more of an economic impact than the reduced sponsor dollars for the city but did not hear a lot about that.

We're talking about sponsorship going down by several hundred grand. If worse comes to worst, that's pocket change for 10 SBC and 12 MAC football members. Well worth the money for the TV exposure the bowl games give.

For the teams is a no brainer to not even worry about making money. Two weeks of additional practice and a three hour national commercial for your program.

The Senior Bowl did say they will move to USA's new stadium once complete. We have more land on campus to do things the NFL is interesting in doing vs the landlocked area of Ladd. It's just funny now that a motion is being made to give Ladd another 500K to fix it up in the proposed next year's budget that has not been approved.

This is not a bandaid on a scratch, this is a bandaid on a shotgun wound.

The city had a prime opportunity to move away from another facility that has no real use. The city is going to go broke maintaining the auditorium, Ladd and The Hank, all to be used for roughly 15 days a year each.

I remember listening on the radio to Bear Bryant's first game at Alabama with my dad. It was Alabama vs LSU at Ladd Stadium. LSU had Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon, and beat the Tide 13-3 after trailing 3-0 at the half. Alabama played one game at Ladd almost every season from 1948 to 1968. In fact the first college game there was Alabama vs Vanderbilt. Bear saw the Ladd games as an excellent recruiting gimmick for Mobile and coastal Mississippi.
