Wow! You mean Florida State is not in the Top Ten?

Eh… Poll standings are for the fans, we don't worry about stuff like that.

Oh wait, wrong sport. Sorry.

(I kid... I kid...)

Who could be confident of that at this point.

No offense, but Grutza pulled that Hawaii game out of the trash in 2008. Pike was suffering from the flu (or some such ailment) and looked terrible. Grutza came off the bench, after losing his starting job against Oklahoma with a broken leg) and brought the Bearcats back against a Hawaii team that dominated most of the game.

We already had the Orange Bowl bid wrapped up, but that Hawaii game was almost a disaster.

That Bearcat team had a lot of heart and Grutza was a big part of that passion and team chemistry. The team had full confidence in Grutza coming into the game in that challenging situation and it showed with the way UC pulled that win out of the fire.

RE: Look who is receiving votes..... THE BEARCATS
Outlook for the rest of our season:

The S&P+ model has been updated from yesterday's games. Our most likely projected record is 9 - 3, with a 79.7% chance of finishing with between 8 - 10 wins. Here's a link to a nifty chart showing our chances of winning each individual game, as well as our win totals. That link will automatically update each week, so if you click on it after next Sunday, it will show the results of the OU game.

The model isn't perfect though, especially this early in the season. This site shows the full S&P+ rankings throughout the FBS. Our current rankings are as follows:

Overall: 63
Offense: 105 (seems low)
Defense: 26
Special teams: 6

RE: Look who is receiving votes..... THE BEARCATS
The S&P+ model seems to be giving us such an optimistic win total not because it thinks we are world beaters, but because it finds our schedule to be favorable. Still, I think it greatly underestimates our offense. Anyone that has watched us through 3 games can see that while we prefer to grind it out (something the S&P+ may not like), we have a passing game that is at least decent. Our WRs don't have elite speed, but that shouldn't be a factor in most of the games on our schedule.

IMO if we continue developing our (soon to be young) OL and get more high level speed in our WR group, we could have a very potent offense in a couple years.

One look at the schedule shows that it is very favorable from here on out. If we beat OU then we are staring at 3 straight games in which we are likely to be clear-cut favorites. The back end of the schedule is difficult with ISF and UCF but those games are followed by ECU. Good deal.

Looking back, Bk took a lot of heat for not not benching Pike in the Orange Bowl that year. TP had 4 TO’s which was a major reason why VT was able to win that game.

Yes, we felt at the time that every Bearcat fan watching in the stadium (or on TV) probably wanted Grutza to come off the bench in that game. It was hard to second guess a coach who took UC to the Orange Bowl. But Kelly appeared to me to be a bit awestruck that night on the big stage and couldn't execute the "next man in" strategy to get back in the game.

Bolded, hope you are correct on this one. I too remain cautiously optimistic but Saturday was such a mismatch in terms is size, speed and talent that I'm reluctant to say we now have a passing game. I think we'll know a lot more after this Saturday's game.

Someone will post it here I'm sure but I'm guessing the ranks of the undefeated teams were thinned considerably this past weekend. Just keep winning and reap the rewards.

We aren't the passing team (execution and talent-wise) of the past regime and may not even be in the same ballpark. But you can't look at our passing game in a vacuum. Look at how our team is built with all the complimentary parts working together and how it is winning games - power, smash-you-in-the-mouth, wear the DEE down running game; strong, physical, smash-you-in-the-mouth defense; nuclear leg powered, flip the field, punter; dual threat QB that challenges the schemes of the opposing DEE; clock churning, possession controlled offense; no critical turnovers...folks this is how they play football in the SEC but with more uber-gobbs of talent of course. What I'm saying is we may finish the year 8-4 with one of our least potent passing offenses. Does that really matter in the end?

This.

If you go back to the Tuberville era, particularly the first 2-3 seasons, we played 4-5 receivers and chucked it 50 times a game, while mixing in the occasional run up the middle. That's not who we are today and that is not who we are going to be under this coaching staff (Note it is not who we were on Dantonio and the Butch Jones regime as well).

This team is built for exactly what you said: wearing teams down with power football. We got the running backs and offensive linemen in the fold for the next 4 years to do exactly what you said, wear the other team out by running the ball. We will still throw the football, just don't expect Des Ridder to throw the ball 50 times a game like Gunner Kiel in 2014.

Frankly, I enjoy this brand of football much more that what we did in 2013 and 2014. Notice how the games this year have ended in 3.5 hours or less? Remember how the games went on for 4.5 hours during the Tubeville era? That's because the clock keeps running when you run the football.

Mega-Yep! Like I posted in another thread, we can't make square peg guys fit into round holes. We are playing to our strengths and I agree Clifton - this is a brand of football I rather enjoy watching. Finesse is out the door...

According to that statistical model, we have a better chance at going undefeated than having a losing record. Not bad for 3 weeks into the season!

Didn't UCF do that in 2017, two years after its winless season? Entirely different circumstances I know, but winning your P5 game early and playing in the AAC it may be possible. USF didn't exactly dominate Georgia Tech or Illinois and neither of those teams appear to have much gas in the tank this season. I like our chances in a November home game against the boys from South Florida. UCF is probably a better team and tougher matchup.

But if UCF, USF and Cincy all continue undefeated past week four it's going to be interesting to see how the pollsters choose to suppress the G5 vote. A case could be made that each is more deserving than some P5 bottom feeders that remain undefeated.

The most glaring example of this is Boston College. They sit at 25 in the coaches poll. Wins against Umass, Holy Cross, Wake. With Purdue on the horizon. Temple does have a chance to hand them a loss in week 5.

Yeah, a once (more) solid schedule now looks less impressive. Temple and SMU are 2 bowl teams who look down - tho I suspect that by the time we get to Temple they will have fully righted their ship, and we're going to get a tough test from them.

Regarding our offense - I have many questions about the true quality of it. We haven't played a quality defense yet. UCLA thoroughly shut down our passing game, however we were able to take advantage of their historically horrible defense. We just outsized Miami.

When we play equal talent teams in conference I think we'll have our first real feel for the offense. The good news is we're able to play all these tune up games in the meantime.

The bottom line is...raise your hand if you thought before the season began that our Cats would be 3-0 with a legit shot to go to 4-0. Most of us were hoping and praying for a 6-6 season realistically.

Not going to lie-- I thought we were going to go 2-2 in the OOC with a chance of finishing 6-6 if things shook out right in conference.

We're going to do better than 2-2 OOC, but I don't want to count any chickens before they are hatched in conference play.
