It is all about rankings and a popularity contest in college football now. We need to make a statement every time out and we will. Back to back shutouts will be nice. When was the last time we did that?

The last time we even shut out 2 opponents in one season was 1981 (Rutgers and Louisville).

The last time we shut out 2 opponents in a row was 1953 under Sid Gilman. But we didn't just shut out 2 opponents in a row... we shut out FIVE. Check out this run:

Cincinnati: 66
Western Reserve (OH): 0

Cincinnati: 27
Dayton: 0

Cincinnati: 41
Louisville: 0

Cincinnati: 67
Virginia Military Institute: 0

Cincinnati: 14
Miami (OH): 0

We scored 213 points unanswered across those 5 games.

Sid Gilman was next level

Sid Gilman 1950s UC = Brian Kelly 2000s UC.

Cats - 48
AA&M - 7

I predict a Pick 6 or a fumble to TD from Hayden Moore late in the game; with the game out of reach and our second & third team playing meaningful minutes.

I don't think we have the kind of high-powered offense that can put up 70 yet, but we will run all over them and I wouldn't be surprised if our new-and-improved defense shuts them out. I'll go:

Cincinnati: 45
Alabama A&M: 3

The other side of it is that I'm not sure Luke Fickell is a "Hang 70 on them" type of coach. Some coaches will run the score up intentionally and will shamelessly try to hang 70+ on the other team, other coaches are not and will instead go for "quality over quantity." I think Fickell is more in the latter camp; I think he's classy enough not to want to embarrass another team, but I think he's also the type to lift his first-and-second teams to get playing time for his bench-guys. I think he will also use this as more a "scrimmage" and practice unused skills than as a chance to "put points up."

But that's just my guess.

Not that we're there, but I think you're right. You have to remember this is a guy who comes out of the John Cooper/Jim Tressel/Mark Dantonio coaching tree (yes I realize you could lump Urban in there too but LF fits the mold of the first three over the later).

It would drive the OSU fan up in Cols. crazy when Tressel would call off the dogs when they got up by 4 TDs on their opponent late in a game. The fact that Urban has no qualms about adding more points on a 49-0 lead makes them love him even more.

The other thing I would add is that I think the type of team we are and will eventually be will be one that is about ground possession, churning out the clock so that having 10 scoring possessions will be virtually impossible short of multiple turnovers for TDs.

35-7. Starters play the first half and rest up in the second half for Ohio U. Couple gimmick plays that they wouldn't have run this year to keep them interested.

Second stringers struggle to move the ball, second string defense gives up a big play for a TD.

Ben Bryant showcases his arm.

RE: Predict the UC v Alabama score?
I know last weekend's score predictions were following the weather forecast. I just saw the latest revision from Channel 9 and they've taken all the rain out of this weekend's forecast, I suppose due to a change in the direction of the hurricane.

No excuses now for Cincinnati not to fill Nippert to the top. Heck, let another thousand students in if that's what it takes. It's the only game in town this weekend with the Bengals going tonight. And we don't use those "seat kill" banners to fill open spaces upstairs as FCC does.

So we see Ben Bryant this game? That would be very exciting!

Not that I have inside information, but I would be surprised. I think we'll see Desmond and Hayden Moore, maybe a little Jake Sopko at the end if things really get out of hand.

With the new redshirt rule, you'd be doing the program a disservice to not have him out there for at least a series or 2, especially in garbage time. I would be more surprised if he DIDN'T play.
