Bearcats Football P5 Performance
With our win against UCLA, I was curious how we've fared as a program against P5 schools. I went back to Mark Dantonio's first season in 2004 and this is what I found (includes bowls):

11: Total Wins
16: Total Losses
2: Most Wins Season (2009 Kelly, 2011/2012 Jones)
3: Most Losses Season (2014 Tuberville)
0-4: Total Wins/Losses (Dantonio)
3-3: (Kelly)
4-3: (Jones)
3-5: (Tuberville)
1-1: (Fickell)
2-4: Total Wins/Losses Bowls
4-6: Total Wins/Losses ACC
3-6: Total Wins/Losses B1G
0-2: Total Wins/Losses B12
3-0: Total Wins/Losses P12
1-2: Total Wins/Losses SEC
2: Most Wins Team (Oregon St./Purdue)
3: Most Losses Team (Virginia Tech/Ohio State)

Thats some good work, thank you for it. As a caveat, I would also include those Big East wins against Pitt, Syracuse, West Virginia, Rutgers, and Louisville. Not only would it make us look better, I honestly believe it's valid to include them.

Absolutely. I pulled the sagarin numbers for the big east during that stretch and to not include those teams is silly.

Especially since all those teams mentioned migrated from the BCS-6 to the P5. UC really was able to compete effectively with that whole group in the Big East. A good reason that none, save Pitt, are willing to schedule the 'Cats now.

All time versus teams in P5 we are:

ACC 54-66-1
B12 11-24-2
B10 20-53-3
P12 5-2
SEC 17-44-3
ND 0-1

We belong in the ACC

Absolutely. The best landing spot. And I'd argue the most likely for UC when it's all said and done. UCF and USF are making lots of noise on the field and in huge TV markets. But the ACC already has two of the most successful programs (FSU and Miami) in the Florida TV footprint. I think we'd all welcome annual games again with Pitt, Louisville and Syracuse.

I think you have to include the old BE teams that sre currently in P5 on this as well. I think another thing to look at is how many of these games are road games.

Yeah, I thought about including the Big East teams but I kept it simpler by the strictest definition of those programs traditionally in the P5 conferences. Are we really going to count Syracuse as a P5 win for example? Anywho, if I get motivated (someone else can take the lead of course) I can add the Big East teams that moved to the P5 and rerun the numbers. Also, road games are easy enough to rectify.

Agreed on the ACC. Even though the money is better, I wouldn't want to be in OSU's shadow in the Big Ten or a cultural mismatch in the SEC (not saying either would be a realistic landing spot anyway). And the Big 12 is too far and too unstable, although obviously we would jump if given the chance.

To fill in TV geography what would make sense?

Cincinnati for Ohio
Memphis for TN

BC rules out UConn
No to Temple as Pitt is PA
WVU ?
ECU no NC well covered
USF UCF no FL covered by FSU and Miami
Tulane ?

Yes we have to count Syracuse. They are a P5 team- just like Purdue, Kansas, Illinois and other bottom feeders. Public perception is they are a better program than we are and always will be simply by wearing an ACC patch on their uniform.

It would be interesting to know how many of those games we were favored to win.

RE: Bearcats Football P5 Performance
**EDIT** I've added a breakdown of the road wins and losses with the same teams below (no Big East schools).

With our win against UCLA, I was curious how we've fared as a program against P5 schools. I went back to Mark Dantonio's first season in 2004 and this is what I found (includes bowls):

11: Total Wins
16: Total Losses
5-1: Home Games
3-11: Road Games
3-4: Neutral Site Games
2: Most Wins Season (2009 Kelly, 2011/2012 Jones)
3: Most Losses Season (2014 Tuberville)
0-4: Total Wins/Losses (Dantonio)
3-3: (Kelly)
4-3: (Jones)
3-5: (Tuberville)
1-1: (Fickell)
2-4: Total Wins/Losses Bowls
4-6: Total Wins/Losses ACC
3-6: Total Wins/Losses B1G
0-2: Total Wins/Losses B12
3-0: Total Wins/Losses P12
1-2: Total Wins/Losses SEC
2: Most Wins Team (Oregon St./Purdue)
3: Most Losses Team (Virginia Tech/Ohio State)

I'm pretty sure Kelly was 3-2 against P5 teams you are counting with losses to Oklahoma and VT.

The Big East was anywhere from the sagarin 5th best conference to sagarin 2nd best conference during that stretch, so not counting Big East teams is still silly.

Crikes Mark, cut me some slack. I counted the loss to Florida under Kelly - I know he wasn't there but it was still his team. This takes a lot of time and I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible and not worry about all the nuances and splitting of hairs. My original point was we have fared better than I imagined against teams TRADITIONALLY in the P5 conferences. I'm working on the numbers for the old Big East teams...

RE: Bearcats Football P5 Performance
**EDIT** I've now added the Big East schools that made the jump to P5's down below the original numbers breakdown. I still think it's useful to compare the two. LOL, why did I go down this road?

No Big East Schools:

11: Total Wins
16: Total Losses
5-1: Home Games
3-11: Road Games
3-4: Neutral Site Games
2: Most Wins Season (2009 Kelly, 2011/2012 Jones)
3: Most Losses Season (2014 Tuberville)
0-4: Total Wins/Losses (Dantonio)
3-3: (Kelly)
4-3: (Jones)
3-5: (Tuberville)
1-1: (Fickell)
2-4: Total Wins/Losses Bowls
4-6: Total Wins/Losses ACC
3-6: Total Wins/Losses B1G
0-2: Total Wins/Losses B12
3-0: Total Wins/Losses P12
1-2: Total Wins/Losses SEC
2: Most Wins Team (Oregon St./Purdue)
3: Most Losses Team (Virginia Tech/Ohio State)

Addition of Big East schools (44 games including TCU that Dantonio beat in 2004):

35: Total Wins
36: Total Losses
17-11: Home Games
15-21: Road Games
3-4: Neutral Site Games
7: Most Wins Season (2009 Kelly)
5: Most Losses Season (2005 Dantonio)
4-13: Total Wins/Losses (Dantonio)
15-6: (Kelly)
11-10: (Jones)
4-6: (Tuberville)
1-1: (Fickell)
2-4: Total Wins/Losses Bowls
19-18: Total Wins/Losses ACC
9-9: B1G
3-7: B12
3-0: P12
1-2: SEC
7: Most Wins Team (Syracuse)
6: Most Losses Team (Louisville)
