Bingo! It’s pretty obvious to folks looking at this a bit removed from ODU football. The ten die hard football fans who post here just can’t see it though. ODU just doesn’t have the money to be an FBS team currently and it doesn’t look good for the next number of years either.
I think ODU would do well in a G5 conference that includes JMU, App State, Ga South, Marshall, Charlotte, Delaware? etc.
My definition of do well is a happy fan base (you guys were) and exposure for the school(s). The die hards could go to away games and home games would be full with occasional sell outs...everybody gets a VT or UVa type game at home each year and can compete. The conference has a team(s) flirting with a top 25 ranking with an occasional beat down of a top half p5.
Stadium needs, decent amenities and seats 25,000 to 32,000 is the norm with one or two that grow to 40,000 over time.
What is JMUs obsession with bringing Delaware along?
If Delaware were to decide to support a 1A football program the chance of long term success would be good. Not long ago, Delaware was one of just a few fcs programs in the country that could and did average 20,000+ attendance at football games. DE already has the stadium and Delaware is bus trip game for many G5s in the mid atlantic.
I believe Delaware is or is about to offer COA to all sports. Good academics. A G5 conference could do a lot worse , coastal carolina.

Students don't care if they have chairbacks or not, most schools have the majority of the seats as bleachers anyways. The only gripe about the student section is the inability to see the scoreboard IMO
I disagree, our endzone is a small crappy one in a small stadium. VTs is a large crappy one in big stadium with games that matter.
there is a huge difference between the ODU student section and the VT student section. Obviously VT is one of the better programs in the country and in the ACC. They have a long history and have won a lot of big games. The students want to be a part of those games and take pride in their school and yes probably dont care as long as they get tickets to the games.
ODU on the other hand has not really had any big wins, nor a great atmosphere, pride among students is lacking, and there fore need other reasons to come to a game. It is sad because I think most of us have some pride on this board but I think thats because of the success we had with basketball and it automatically translates over to football for us. For the current student they have not really had any success and so they just dont care as much. Winning will cure everything but its going to take a lot of money and resources plus some luck to start winning games.
Money must be put into the north endzone as soon as possible. If we can spend $20 million on the north endzone and get 5k more and get attendance up to 27,000 we might actually start moving in the right direction and advancing the program.
I totally agree with you and probably should have explained myself. Obviously Foreman Field will never be what Lane Stadium is. But some posters were talking about how the students have the worst seats in the stadium, I only meant to compare that the students in Lane are on the exact same type of structure ODU students are, but much bigger. While the north end zone can be an eyesore especially if you upgrade everything else, I really don't think chairbacks and the works is necessary. Closing in the corners, adding capacity, and making the stadium not look like it was pieced together? Yes I'm all for that.
I also don't think the students necessarily need to be in the bottom 4 rows on the sidelines either (I don't think it would look good either), while Liberty pulled it off well, most student sections are behind an end zone to some capacity. Having the full force of the student section and band behind the opposing team when they are starting deep in their own territory, and having to face the student section and band while in the red zone/goal line can be tough especially when the students are really into it. But that's just my opinion. I loved sitting in the end zone while I was a student, minus the fact that I couldn't see the scoreboard.
There is no simple answer to our woes. Should we have moved up? Were there reasons at the time that made it look like the correct move? Or should we attempted (maybe we did) to help create a new 1A conference with closer schools? Yes, I like being a 1A school, however........ who the hell cares about playing the schools in Texas and Louisiana? There is little or no natural rivalry, primarily because of the far flung nature of CUSA. Looking back, I would rather be a top 1AA school rather than a bottom feeder in 1A. Plus, we would have still had the natural rivalries. Sure we went to a bowl. Big deal! I still have no interest in playing the western CUSA schools and I'm sure they don't care about us. Let's get back to reality.

Im glad we bumped up but we didnt know what C-USA would be like. It just hasn't worked. Now we need a new regional conference. This is my 16 team conference (only one crossover game to limit long distance travel), not the worst basketball conference either:
North
Old Dominion
JMU
UMass
Marshall
WKU
MTSU
App State
Charlotte
South
Coastal Carolina
Ga Southern
Ga State
UAB
Troy
Southern Miss
FAU
FIU

16 is too big imo. I'd take CUSA-E plus UAB, that's 8 teams. Add in both GA schools, App & JMU.

Why do you think its to big, area or number of teams? If you have 2 halves of 8 then you effectively have two 8 team conferences under one name which reduces travel costs even with more teams. Furthermore, you still need some schools with names and southern miss and coastal provide that. I have UMass because I think they need a home and have a good bball program.

Crushed it. Especially on this thought. We built VT's (and JMU's to a degree) program when we balked in the late 80s.
That said, we are in a far flung conference but there is lots of talent in it. And every Sunday night and Monday night gives clear promotion to recruits all over the place that CUSA has a LOT of talent. ODU, and its complaining posters, just needs to toughen up and win the league for a change. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida schools have the same issues we're griping about. And they don't even sit in the 757.
I embrace the challenge of a tough league. No question in my mind that ODU would still be dominating the local VA based leagues but what is wrong with stepping up to something that is hard for a change? It's going to feel even better when we finally get it done.

Too many teams.
I disagree. It might seem like a lot but its all of the quality G5 teams in the southeast.
