Unofficial Search Committee
So, IF we were to be looking for a new head coach in the next 12-24 months, let's see what a list of candidates might look.

1. Matt Simon
(or perhaps Mr. Simon could be brought in as offensive coordinator more immediately)

I wouldn't mind seeing Canada, but he might be too high profile for us -- especially if he has a good year and Maryland keeps him...

We could roll the dice with JL. I'd love to see that...

NIU might be the right time and exactly what Scott Shaffer needs right now as well.

RE: Unofficial Search Committee
I will never understand the infatuation with our ex-players. Bill Mallory, Jerry Pettibone, Joe Novak, and Dave Doeren never played at NIU, but, they were all very successful coaches in DeKalb. Just find the best coach. PERIOD.

JL? Really? He has been a HC for exactly two high school games and has a record of 1-1. I loved watching him play just as much as everyone else, but, he is NOT yet qualified to be the HC of the Huskies.

If the right guy is a former NIU player, that’s terrific, but, it should be far down the list of required qualifications.

You don't understand the fascination with former players? Geez, let me explain it to you. The fans really liked them as players and would love to get more of them when then move on from playing. PJ could have been the legend here had he stuck with us and the buzz (for as long as he was here) would have been like you'd never seen in DeKalb because not only was he a great player he came back as a coach. If you don't understand the infatuation with a former player, you've never been a fan.

The next HC will not be a positions coach, that's for sure.

Oh, really.......so I am not a fan. Well, I have been a chairback season ticket holder for over 40 years. Does that qualify for your fandom?

Being a great, well- liked player has ZERO to do with being a quailified HC.

And who said it did? Like I said there's a reason why people want their former players coming back. I'm sure Bama would love to get Dabo back after Saban retires, but whatever you say.

I can't believe Nebraska took Scott Frost. That hasn't generated any buzz at all...

Dabo and Scott Frost are already well established, successful head coaches. Our list was Matt Simon, Thomas Hammock, and Jordan Lynch. Hardly the same thing at all.

No need to argue with him. Every football season, its constant bickering and one-upmanship from him.

RE: Unofficial Search Committee
Hiring an X-Player as a Head Coach is a great idea, as long as they have been out there as a coach for a while. (ie PJ and Hammock) What i like about that idea is they WANT TO BE HERE AT NIU! If we could keep a qualified coach using a working system that is a major plus. My two cents. We are a steppong stone school for coaches, reloading and revamping our system every 2-3 years is difficult and we always wonder what we are getting. Hammock seems to fit the bill very well, maybe.

I agree. But we are NIU and they are Bama and Nebraska. Hardly the same thing at all...
