If Rice beats LSU by even 1 you should bump us ten levels.

(09-05-2018 10:54 AM)CoachMaclid Wrote:  Does the rival have to be a conference school? The original poster said NT-SMU was a rival. The historic universally-hated rival on Marshall’s schedule is Miami of Ohio, who we defeated in week 1. Also, I’d argue a school could have more than 1 rival. In 2020, we play both Ohio and ECU in the same year. EA Sports has Ohio, Miami, ECU, and WVU listed as our rivalry games in the last version of NCAA Football on game systems.

Marshall has no rivals in CUSA, there might be one or two that form but it takes time and games to build a rivalry game most of the time. For instance Marshall and Miami OH have played 45 times since 1905 and for the most part Miami OH has had the upper hand leading the series 30-14-1 but Marshall has won 10 of the last 11 games in the series.

Th most games Marshall has with anyone on the east side of CUSA is 9 games with WKU and 6 of those games were before both was in CUSA in 1996 and 5 1951 or earlier.

The misery index is too complicated.

Try this:

(50-A) x L

A is the average attendance in thousands.
L is the number of losses

Less attendance, more losses = more misery.

After Saturday, I think if you lose to UTEP or ODU going forward, you should go down 2 levels.

Yeah, if we beat KY or Vandy by even 1 I get pretty jazzed about that.

You might also include "beat a G5 team by 28 or more". That is pretty exciting.

Since you asked, I'll give you my opinion. Personally, I don't think any of us really have rivalries. For USM, a win against LaTech is no different than a win against Marshall, WKU or UNT (plus others). It isn't like we are Ohio ST playing Michigan.

A Team's Fans go UP a level if they:

- beat their rival
- put together a 3 game win streak
- put together a 5 game win streak
- are unranked and beat a ranked team
- are ranked and beat a team ranked higher than them
- beat a P5 team by 21 points or more
- beat a FBS team by 21 points or more
- make the college football playoff
- become bowl eligible

A Team's Fans go DOWN a level if they:

- put together a 5 game losing streak

- lose to any FCS opponent
- lose any game by 21 points or more
- fail to become bowl eligible

Fellow conference members...this is all crap! We are all supporters of great programs throughout America who have not had the good fortune to be invited to join one of the countries colonial country clubs...we are becoming the 21st century slaves...
We continue to strive to compete with programs who are literally receiving 10’s of millions of dollars each year via their conference memberships while we might get a check for $500,000 at best for a BOWL GAME at years end and we should be happy and say Thank you master...This is just another disguised form of slavery in America...

Make sure to use butt cheeks in seats for the attendance number. Which is close to what most schools already do, (except WKU)

Good suggestions. I think it would make sense to implement just beating a P5 school, and beating an FBS by 21 or more. Not too keen on just bowl eligible since it's only 6 wins, what about clinching the conference championship berth instead?

I'll still keep "real" rivals and not make up ones just for the sake of making them up. I'm not sure if I can really say if ODU has any. Here's the update (you can only move one level per week, otherwise UNT would be at level 1 right now)

A Team's Fans go UP a level if they:

- beat their rival
- put together a 3 game win streak
- put together a 5 game win streak
- beat a ranked team
- beat a P5 team
- beat a G5 team by 21 or more
- win the division

A Team's Fans go DOWN a level if they:

- lose to their rival
- put together a 3 game losing streak
- put together a 5 game losing streak
- lose to any FCS opponent
- lose any game by 21 points or more
- fail to become bowl eligible

Level 2:
Marshall (beat their rival Miami Ohio)
North Texas (beat their rival SMU, beat a G5 team by 21 or more)

Level 3:
Charlotte
FIU
La Tech
UAB
USM

Level 4:
FAU (lost by 21 or more)
MTSU (lost by 21 or more)
ODU (lost by 21 or more)
Rice (lost to their rival Houston)
UTEP (lost to FCS opponent)
UTSA (lost by 21 or more)
WKU (lost by 21 or more)

Re-reading the article, it appears you can only travel one level per week. So I changed UNT back to Level 2.

Good point about bowl. Good idea about CCG berth.

Rice vs UTSA (???)

Sorry, I have no idea what to do with the Texas schools. Also considered WKU vs MTSU, but then wouldn't know what to do with Marshall.

Another thought is to simply just make the last game of the year count as the rivalry game if we can't agree on the above? Then it would look like this:

ODU - Rice
Marshall - FIU
WKU - La Tech
USM - UTEP
UAB - MTSU
Charlotte - FAU
UNT - UTSA

(Great schedule by our conference... psych)

UAB and MTSU are not rivals. The closest thing UAB has to a rival in CUSA is Mississippi Southern.

Tracking. I'm getting rid of rivals just for the sake of having a rival. If your team has a real rival let me know! Probably wait until the week that you play though because I'll forget
