RE: Rice v UH **POST-GAME THREAD*
Outstanding First Half, especially our interior run defense. Unfortunately, UH made the necessary adjustments at half time, and just dominated us with their up tempo game in the 2H. Too many missed tackles allowing for long gains when we still had the lead or was only down by a score. And the secondary in the second half was what we have seen for the past 4 - 5 years. Once they figured out how to stop our running game, the outcome was just a matter of time.
Still, an encouraging effort against a quality UH team. I still think we can still win 4 - 5 games this year against our CUSA schedule.

But it should be noted, I think, that they weren't able to completely stop our offense, and if we made those 3 missed FGs, the game looks a bit different.
That's one difference between "bad" quarters in this game and in previous years

RE: Rice v UH **POST-GAME THREAD*
This game should put the rest the long repeated and oft cited statements about our talent and how it is physically incapable of competing with anybody. UH was better and more athletic and we still held our own for a while.
The game wasnt over in the first quarter. Heck, we were in it till the end and left 9 points in the board with missed FGs and missed scoring a TD at the end with a slant that was behind the receiver. UH clearly was a more talented team, but we moved the ball
Long way to go, but hope is a wonderful thing.

We looked like a Division I-A football team! Well, on offense, anyway, and with a touch of Jekyll and Hyde at the QB position to be sure, but this was a bad matchup for a heavily run-oriented offense and we nevertheless were able to produce 439 yards of O . . . with 292 via Plan B.
Defensively, we allowed 577. Not ready to declare any material improvement in that phase of the game.
Were it not for a snap over the punter's head in the last game and a Pop Warner-level mistake of trying to field a punt with your hands in this game, we might be looking at a loss to an FCS team and a business-as-usual 30+-point loss today . . . I'm wary of mirages, is what I'm saying . . . but to our credit we've punished those unforced errors when given the opportunities and even better we've limited our own propensity for TOs.

You can never count on making FGs over 47 yards.

Aside from a few atrocious missed tackles that resulted in long gains, the defense-- including the secondary-- played quite well throughout the First Half. Uh made the adjustments in the second half, and notched up their up tempo offensive game, and we had no answer for that. However, we competed against a borderline Top 25 team; something we haven't done against even a Top 50 team the past 4 seasons.

Great effort.
We just dont have the talent yet to win against a Top 25 team. We will do fine in Conf USA.

True. And the secondary still remains a major point of concern. That said, while the stats still look bad, we look better on defense with the eye-test. That ghastly 1Q pick that we threw giving UH the ball deep in our end... that would have been the point of game over in years past.
We are only 2 games in.. so declaring anything is premature with the limited data points, but am seeing signs of improvement in certain facets of the game.
Still unhappy with the penalty situation.

I really thought Rice would have no trouble covering the spread, but even then I'm very impressed with the Rice performance today. Cephus destroyed our secondary and caught some balls despite some PIs from our DBs that weren't called. If Rice doesn't finish in the top half of the division in conference USA I will be surprised.
Bloomgren is the real deal. I'm glad to see some more optimism around the Rice program after the last 1-2 years

Penn St and App St tied 10-10 at half. App St had a KO return for TD.

You touched on something for me.
It felt to me like UH got away with quite a bit, while Rice couldn’t do anything right in the refs’ eyes.
Great example is the personal foul they called right before the half on the kickoff return. Our guy was running back to the sideline and clipped a UH player a bit - it was light and did not seem intentional - yet the ref made a call that had the potential to competely change momentum.

The super late flags on the PI late in the game didn’t help.

Good game overall and actually enjoyable to watch. My only complaints:
1 - the long FG tries in the 2nd half instead of being more aggressive and going for it.
2 - Rice’s QB’s aren’t great so far, but Cephus is great and I would have liked Rice to take some more shots at him in the late 3rd and 4th quarters. Especially on 2nd and long where Rice wasn’t having any success running in the 2nd half.

Bigs, I disagree on your first point, as in all 3 of those long FG situations it was 4th and long. Different story if we had a 4th and 3 (or less), but I believe each time we were 4th and 7 or 8 yards to go.

I think Stank establishes himself as the better QB and will be starting from here on out. Besides a few balls in the dirt, he made some decent throws.

Boswell spoiled us in this regard

Tyner made some nice throws too, and wasn't it Stank who had that godawful INT straight to the LB?
In any case, both guys outperformed their previous baselines and agree that Stank has slight advantage at the moment
Also agree with previous comment that ideally we'd be getting more out of the QB position, not just serviceable game management. One can imagine that with improvement at QB and DBs we're looking at a top-75 type team

Stank threw a boatload of ducks in the first quarter and half.
If he decides to perform consistently as he did in the 3rd and 4th quarters, you would be right.
1st quarter and a half I could swear I could hear someone yelling 'Pull' when he tossed a *number* of floaters.
The TD at the end of the half was dead bird. WR climbed tree and outmuscled the defender for it.
If first half Stank is the quarterback, I am not going to fight a taxi situation. Problem is, which Stank will be the steady-state Stank? (awesome alliteration there....)
I think there is no choice but to assume '3rd quarter Stank' is going to the norm; its his until 1st quarter Stank comes forward....
