Observations from yesterday's scrimmage.

No real changes on the starting lineup except Aston Walter is now at 1st string RB (maybe due to injuries?), and Tyner (for now at least) seems to be the starting QB. I'm a little worried we have just 2 senior and 2 junior starters for now on the offense. I'm also surprised that if running the ball is going to be a focal point, then why would we use a lineup with just one RB and TE, and three mostly slot-type receivers? I would think a FB and/or 2nd TE will be in the mix quite a bit too.

Remember that while Bloomgren is a “pound the rock” guy, his OC comes from a more wide open background. I could see something like a Fred/Dinger collaboration. In that context, could Walter be a reprise if Trevor Cobb?

Or, it may be that the ultimate goal is to "pound the rock"....but for now we simply don't have the personnel to accomplish this. So some flexibility to use the personnel we have may be more in order this season...

Good to see he is not trying to force square pegs into round holes.

But rather, pound round rocks into rectangular end zones.

Is it? He couldn't hold on to the ball while standing in the pocket...

Of the three, he was the one that could convert to another position the easiest, and he has the most eligibility left to learn the position.

I am worried a bit about his ability to hold on to the ball but I have a lot of confidence in his ability to get open and to run after the catch.

Wouldn't that be oblong, rather than round, rocks?

Well that depends entirely upon your point of view.

There should be criminal action taken and the program should face serious action.

A horrible environment, to be sure, but from what I've read no crime was committed.

Its emblematic of the state of big time college football today. If Maryland was playing for the National Championship, this story would've been buried deep. And the fact that this type of behavior was known about by their administration and ignored indicts the whole miserable bunch of them.
What will happen? Some suspensions. Some resignations. That's about it.

linky: Tom Herman will talk to NCAA if asked about 2014 strip club trip with Zach Smith

Quote:"My wife knew exactly where I was, had no issue with it,'' Herman said....

Herman said he's had "some conversations'' with school president Greg Fenves and athletic director Chris Del Conte. Herman would not address whether he or Smith paid for any high school coaches who were present at the strip club.

"Not until the NCAA asks me to,'' said Herman, who has been instructed by Texas not to address that specific question until the NCAA determines if it wants to investigate the matter.

WTH?

This Zach Smith story has turned into tabloid nonsense. Why on earth would the NCAA investigate two adults who went to a legal business? Oh my, they spent $600! If the two had gone to a Cowboys game and had a few drinks it would cost about the same. I went to a business dinner with a lawyer once that cost over $1500 for the two of us because he was into trying all of these rare ports they had (and I don't even like port).

I am fully behind an investigation of domestic violence, with the appropriate punishment if evidence of unlawful activity is found, but this strip club story is a little off the path.

My understanding is that they are investigating it because Smith was allegedly hosting high school coaches at the strip club in violation of NCAA recruiting rules.

Ahh, OK. That makes more sense. After the whole "Smith received sex toy package deliveries at the office" report, I thought this was just more scandalous fodder, rather than substance.
