RE: John McCain
Great American and patriot. A gentleman always, and though I occasionally disagreed with his politics, I never questioned his motives, or the genuineness of his message. A Naval Academy graduate who went through hell after being captured. He will be missed. I hope future politicians use JM as the model to follow.

RE: John McCain
McCain was a true hero and a statesman and is going to his grave upholding that tradition. He has requested that Trump not attend and that GW and Obama deliver his eulogy.

RE: John McCain
Senator McCain is a huge loss to the integrity of the political system and the patriotic thread of democracy in our country. He is one to be emulated by all politicians from both sides of the isle. He was a TRUE American in every sense.

It is a travesty, a failure of moral leadership that Trump will not allow WH flag to be lowered to half-staff on the passing of John McCain.

Trump is the exact opposite of Sen McCain. Classless, petty, vulgar, ignorant. It says a lot about a man who has been asked to stay away from both Barbara Bush's funeral and John McCain's as well, while GW and Obama have been asked to deliver the eulogy.

It is my understanding that the flag was lowered, but only for one day, which is actually general custom for a senator. However, the more recent practice for Presidents is to make exceptions, and keep lowered until the burial.

In short, I agree that Trump is being his typical j**koff with respect to how he is dealing with McCain's death, just as he was when McCain was alive. He can see that McCain is respected for good and honorable reason, based on his merit, and the jealousy continues postmortem.

I'm sure it did not help that McCain himself ordered that Trump not be allowed at his funeral, and the family has made it very clear that he is not to be present. A very well deserved insult. I would do the exact same thing if I was John McCain and his family, but what a commentary that is. Trump is now going to take his football and run home crying.

McCain was known for his explosive temper. Called some fellow Republicans f'ing jerks, azzholes, known to throw actual punches, even referred to his wife as the "C" word. He would complain about the religious right and then seek their backing, etc, etc. He also could be very gracious and dignified. Read some of the 2008 era criticisms. Voted for him for President. I totally appreciate Senator McCain's service to his Country, but I will not color over his short comings.

RE: John McCain
Didn’t he promise his voters he’d repeal Obamacare but voted no just to spite trump? I admire his service to our country but he was pretty similar to all the other career politicians in Washington.

The author's thesis is a bit far fetched, IMHO

This widespread adoration of John McCain is interesting to observe.

RE: John McCain
While saying this to his wife was inexcusable, it (allegedly) happened 26 years ago. In fact a lot of those temper explosions happened in the 90s.

Not that it makes it "okay." But it's not his reputation of being foul mouthed, coarse, and quick-to-anger that earned him some adoration. Rather it's his propensity to promote "across the aisle" compromise and pragmatism.

A practice which, unfortunately, is increasingly being viewed as capitulation and weakness by the modern-day Trump GOP core in favor of purity tests. And I say this as someone who has supported plenty of moderate Republicans at every level in the past.

RE: John McCain
I don't mind if a president has a bit of a boorish side or drops some f-bombs behind closed doors. In fact, most presidents in history have had a prick-ish side to them. LBJ, a man known for enacting the Civil Rights Act, was among the worst.

But you have to know when to reign it in, put on the presidential hat, and not let a "say anything" persona be the centerpoint of your governance.

You should amend your comment by saying "...viewed as capitulation and weakness by the modern-day Trump GOP core AND THE PROGRESSIVE LEFT THAT HAS TAKEN OVER THE DEMOCRAT PARTY in favor of purity tests."

Both parties need more John McCains and fewer jack-boot ideological purists.

Say what you want about Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil's poltics, but they were able and willing to work together and compromise for the greater benefit of our Nation, without capitulating. We don't have that anymore and are suffering greatly for it.

Rest In Peace, Senator McCain, and don't swear too much upstairs or you'll get yourself in trouble.
