Hopson contract extended
Extended 4 years. Same base salary - $500,000. I thought that was a good deal for USM when he was first hired. At this point, I think it is sad that USM can't pay their 3rd year coach any more than that. Sure, honor the 3rd and 4th year at $500k if you just want (or have to), but at least amp up the 2 extra / extended years FFS.

USM deserves everything it (n)ever gets.

yeah, a slight bump in assistant pay....but we have to pay 10 assistants now instead of 9. so there wasn't much of a choice.

the previous contract had a good buyout too -at $2,000,000. NOW....its ******* peanuts. stupid ass administration. that's the most important thing we can have in the contract is a big buyout. i was screaming that for years! the dumbest mother ******* on earth work for this university.

There’s was no reason to do this at this point in the year. We’re 1 week away from beginning year 3 of the Hopson era. What if he lays an egg this year and goes 4-8 or 5-7. Then you can’t oust him without a 3yr buyout. Promise him the extension after the season and if he tanks you can part ways for much cheaper. He’s not going anywhere (nobody wants him) so we had all the leverage and just gave it away. This just reeks for the administration being okay with mediocre football as long as it’s cheap.

On the flip side, if we go 11-2 and he does get an offer, tgey jusy anti up $1,000,000....maybe even just $750,000, instead of the $2,000,000 buyout.

RE: Hopson contract extended
If he’s willing to do the job for a $500,000 base, there’s no need to pay him a $500,001 base.

The original buyout was set at a time when our 5th-year seniors had been through 3 coaches. It was jacked up (one reporter called it “ridiculous”) so if we had to go through yet another change that soon, we’d at least make some serious bank. As great as it would be to extort any potential P5s looking to take our HC, now that Hopson’s been around a while, bringing the buyout down to a more customary amount does makes some sense.

I’m generally OK with offering years in lieu of higher pay given our finances, but since this is really only a 2-year extension, why bother doing it now? Sure, don’t let him go into a lame duck year for recruiting purposes and all that, but why redo his contract with 2 years left on it instead of letting it run down to 1 year and then signing him through the 2022 season? Did they maybe have to rewrite the deal now to account for the new assistant’s position?

this isn't about being right. and im sorry you live in fear of BDR replying and / or editing your posts. the fact is, a $2,000,000 buyout was one of the best things USM has put into our football HCs contract, and now they removed it. the "ifs" are for the dumbasses, such as yourself, that need examples to understand how bad a mistake it was to remove the high buy out.

‘YOU’ said ‘if’, so, glad you accepted the dumb*** you are.

$2MM buyout considering $500k salary? Yea, that’s a one sided contract Do not blame Hop nor administration for reducing. But hey, have it!!! And ‘YOU’ gave how much to improve the situation?

what is this thing with "if"? "if", you live your day to day life making decisions without sizing up situations by asking yourself "if x,y,z", then you are certainly one of the dumbasses that helped get USM where it is today. learn how to think. ever heard of risk / reward? clearly you have not.

considering you dont see the benefit of having a $2m buyout, im most certain YOU are one of the reasons USM is in the situation its in now....ate up full of dumb***.

and do tell, how much would be appropriate for me to give this dumb*** university that would solve the problems they have created by mishandling funds? bc i have ZERO faith in them making any right moves. it seems that every time i think about giving a little tiny amount for them to mishandle, they out dumb themselves.

try not to wake up in a cold sweat tonight for fear of being mocked by BDR in an online message board.

How is making a contract more fair for the 3rd year coach such a stupid thing to do in some of your eyes?

I’ve had my odds with University administration but to say that we aren’t doing pretty well for our current situation is foolish.

Maybe it’s just my thoughts and everyone else has a different opinion, but it’s not like Hop has done anything impressive. The contract extension is basically accepting mediocrity (isn’t this why we fired Bower?) and admitting we really have no money. Not only this, but Hop has done very little to excite an already apathetic fan base. We need to get our crap together and hire another Fedora-esque personality to rally our fans. It’s been proven time and time again that someone like Fedora or Tyndall draws in and excites fans. Laid back, monotone, boredom does not. And the fact that we’ve struggled against atrocious competition under Hopson just puts the nail in the coffin.

As a recent grad (13) who’s paid attention to USM for a good portion of my life, lack of leadership and mismanagement of funds are the two biggest reasons I haven’t joined Eagle Club and become a season ticket holder. I have no faith that my money will be used effectively. I have no faith that those in charge have a vision that puts us in a better spot than we are today. And I don’t even have to go into the tragedy that is our scheduling.

Until smart moves start being made by our leadership, I’ll continue to go to games I care about and enjoy the experience as much as possible, but I won’t be shelling out from my limited income to support utter incompetence and mediocrity.

Correct, Hopson is not a great coach and he is not going to get any fans excited. I also don't think the administration sucks as bad as portrayed in this thread. Is it great, no. If they had given him a raise, then I would agree with the comments about the administration.

I don't even know why you guys are arguing over a buyout change. It isn't like Hopson is going to all of a sudden turn into a great coach and be targeted by P5 programs.

No administration will ever be capable of making right decisions when there is zero cash. Not making donations or going to sporting events (when/if you can) will only contribute to the demise of USM athletics.

Which is a pretty prudent thing to admit when it’s true. Spending funds we don’t have certainly isn’t going to turn out any better.

The chasm between the zero excuses the university is allowed and the hundreds of excuses people are happy to rattle off in justifing their paltry support never ceases to amaze. The administration (especially past ones) is certainly not without fault, but there’s simply no such thing as something for nothing. We’ve got people who won’t pony up $50 themselves but, by golly, want somebody else to pony up $1 million for a head coach. Yeah, OK. Good luck with that.
