New NCAA March Madness basketball ranking process
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketb...system-rpi

RIP RPI.

The NCAA announced Wednesday it has developed the NCAA Evaluation Tool, known as NET, to replace the RPI as the primary sorting tool for teams under consideration for the NCAA Tournament.

The change is effective immediately and NET will be used instead of RPI for the 2018-19 season.

NET will take into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, offensive and defensive efficiency and the quality of wins and losses.

The system won't give more weight to games late in the season, instead omitting game date and order from the data. It also caps winning margin at 10 points as to not encourage teams to run up the score.

SO now what? CUSA changed schedule completely for RPI. Now we have system that will I am sure rank us even more below the so called "Power Conf. teams". People seem optimistic this will help teams in CUSA, I will believe it when I see it...

Even with the change. Playing the top teams at the end of the year can do nothing but help if you win.

One change that would have benefited WKU in particular if this system had been in place last year: now all wins will count equally whether they were played at the start of the season or end of season. So that Purdue win would've counted for more.

For the rest of us, this means that the early conference tournaments our teams play are even more important. Knocking off a name brand school will go a longer way, especially if you can win by 10.

Yes but selection committee only uses what they want to use, they will change it to something else to get Syracuse in over WKU or Oklahoma over WKU.....Doesn't matter we will never win when its Power Conf. team vs. other teams.....

Exactly. No matter how fair they try to make it seem the P5 are gonna get their teams in when push comes to shove.

Don't get your hopes up. New system won't change a thing. Either win the conference tournament or basically go undefeated for any hope at the NCAA tournament. It's a rigged system guys. The committee will ignore whatever teams they don't want in just like they ignored highly rated RPI teams when they weren't one of the power schools.

Most important line in a different article about this change is the very last line:
“The NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee has had helpful metrics it has used over the years, and will continue to use the team sheets, but those will now be sorted by the NCAA Evaluation Tool,” Gavitt said. “As has always been the case, the committee won’t solely focus on metrics to select at-large teams and seed the field. There will always be a subjective element to the tournament selection process, too.”

Mid-majors, or whatever someone wants to call nonP5 programs, need not apply.

Agreed as quite a few non P5 teams have done their part and had mid 20 RPIs but the committee comes back with some BS excuse like body of work, conference strength, lack of wins vs top 5 teams, blah blah blah

We are in agreement. Our scheduling at the end of the year won't matter either to them.

Don"t dismiss that end of the year scheduling. The conference tourney winner has a better shot at a higher seed in the big dance.Give the new method a chance--the old one got us nowhere.

You will see a lot of pissed of coaches this year, teams will be running scores way up on other teams given the chance because of the scoring margin factor

I like it, and I'm not dismissing it. I like it for the pure fact that the regular season actually means something, and if my team is doing well it means the last 5 games will be really fun to watch. However, it is naive to think it will matter to the selection committee.

The scoring margin factor caps at 10.

Not like it really matters but scoring caps at 10 and any OT games, margin will always be 1 regardless of the final score....I am not too worried about any "new metric" they use, in the end, the humans will be biased and pick bigger names teams regardless of what numbers they are looking at.....
