What would you consider good attendance for volleyball?

1 to 2k / match. VB is HUGE in this area and if they (Athletic dept) does outreach well, then I am confident they can draw.

I cant put a number on it because I dont know the capacity of the volleyball facility but I would guess most matches would be around 75%+

I think we will see good attendance for weekend matches. But I'm guessing there will be a notable drop on weekdays.

RE: Volleyball 2020
In a past life I covered high school volleyball, here and elsewhere, and I don't remember the crowds being particularly large — mostly friends and family of players — until the regional playoffs at least. There might be a curiosity factor at first but at least in the first few years I can't imagine more than a few hundred butts in seats.

Field hockey is pretty big in Tidewater but I don't recall ODU having more than a few hundred at their games at most, even when they were winning titles.

I went to a field hockey game when I was a freshman (in 1993) that broke an NCAA attendance record. Seemed empty to me. Maybe 2k people. Not sure if the record still stands.

It's a fall sport, with beach volleyball being held in the spring.

If I'm not incorrect, the coach that ODU hires will pull double duty in coaching both indoor and beach volleyball. I know we have the volleyball court at Whitehurst, though I don't know how much would need to be done to make it NCAA compliant.

EDIT: After some looking around, I can't find anything that actually mentions beach volleyball. Only mention is of indoor volleyball.

I would not be surprised in the least if they hire a "traditional" indoor VB HC, along with a higher qualified assistant coach who would/could act as the beach VB HC.

I remember they tried to break that record in 97 or 98, I think, but while they topped 2K, they fell short. Foreman Field in its pre-ODU football incarnation was massive, something like 25,000, so field hockey and women's lacrosse could put their cumulative season attendance in there for a match and still have it look woefully empty. At least now they can have their 250-500 in a purpose-build stadium that doesn't make them look like the worst photos of GSU football we can gin up.

I think that's how they do with some track coaching staffs; an assistant runs the cross country program.

My guess is that if you can get seating for 500 to 750 in there, you should be OK. If ODU volleyball becomes a thing, you can always revisit.

For big matches, they can always use the Ted.

Or like a conference tournament unless Judy can find another NFL practice facility for us to use. I kid. Maybe.

It's gone from the website now. We last had a women's cross country team in 2002 but dropped it to start women's golf.

They have pages for both men's and women's but it looks like it is due to how the archives are set up. For title IX compliance, it seems to be the most economical choice once volleyball gets going.

Without any inside info, I'm still betting on women's bowling to be the next sport added after volleyball.

Harry maps out ODU's plan for women's volleyball. In it, he also says that ODU plans to add beach volleyball eventually.

Cant wait for volleyball, we should be able to be pretty competitive right away. I can also see lots of student support for volleyball!
