KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
The KSU Football Roster for 2018 fall/camp and season has been updated.

Link to the roster: https://kentstatesports.com/roster.aspx?...t=position

More offensive linemen have been added over the summer, which brings the total up to 13 OL. A Junior college transfer and 4 freshmen join the existing 8 OL returning. The TE position has been transformed with only 2 returning and 4 newcomers. 3 tall freshmen WR's and Antwan Dixon join 6 existing WR's returning. 3 new CBs join 6 returning CBs. 6 newcomers join 8 returning DL. 2 new Kickers come in to battle it out to replace the kid who transferred to South Carolina Gamecocks as a graduate transfer. 3 freshmen newcomers join 7 returning LBs. Both punters return. 2 newcomers join 3 returning QBs. 2 newcomers join 7 returning RBs. 0 newcomers join 7 returning Safties.

Tough non-conference schedule, but I think this team has more talent on it then Haynes last few years, so it will be interesting to see how they develop as the year goes on.

Would it be asking too much that at the end of the year our leading rusher will be a RB, the WR will catch the ball, and the QB throws the ball in front of the WRs instead of behind them?

RE: KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
Had a dream last night we lost the season opener 45-16 to Nebraska-Omaha. Gross.

As always, I'm cautiously pessimistic about football, so this year I think we go 3-9. If SL can recruit a 2nd strong class, and that's a big if based on how far behind other 2019 MAC classes at the moment, we'll be 6-6 next season.

I think we can get by Howard and maybe 2 of Ball Sate/BG/EMU?? Akron game hopefully competitive at home- so I agrre with GF99 that 3-9 or 4-8 if Akron co-operates...I trust the offense will be considerably more wide open that the last couple of products!!

RE: KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
I think every MAC game is a toss up game especially towards the end of the season. With the exception of the Toledo game. All the unknowns on the team make the Illinois game interesting. They haven't been a good team and Lovie Smith could be on his way out before the season is over. I think the team goes 6-6 give or take a win.

RE: KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
I wondered about Mitchell as well. He showed some promise as a freshman but was injured and unable to get back on the field.

I also wondered about Chalfonte Butler. I thought he was our best tight end on the team last year. They were trying to move him to offensive lineman due to the lack of players at that position. Now he seems to be gone.

I see Luke Grandjean also appears to be missing from the roster.

Coach Lewis said that he needed to take care of business off the field during spring ball, so I assume he didn't do that.

When asked when he thinks his program will truly be “Flash Fast,” Lewis said around the midway point of year two (2019).

RE: KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
Coach Lewis, during his interview on KSU Radio from MAC Media Day, mentioned the following items in terms of personnel.

Defense notes:
-The defense will deploy a 3-4 front, so Haynes/staff's defense with the star & 4-3 front (extra DB) is gone.
-DL Jordan Silva is a graduate transfer from Nevada and they are counting on him to make an immediate impact (6'4" 257lbs per the online roster).
-Redshirt freshmen, AJ Musolino, moved from safety to LB.
-NT, Kalil Morris, will be a starter as will Jim Jones & Matt Bahr @ LB. All other positions on defense are open competition for the starting spots (I would assume that Hines & Parker will be starters in defensive backfield and Theo Eboigbe & Nick Faulkner will be in the mix for DE).

Special teams notes:
-Freshmen Kickers, Dalton Christopher & Matthew Trickett will have a battle in camp for the starting position.
-Punter, Derek Adams, is on many of the preseason watch lists.

Offense notes:
-Dustin Crum & Woody Barrett will battle it out in fall camp for the starting QB position
-Justin Rankin will be the starting TB
-Adam Gregoire & Nate Warnock will be 2 of the starting 5 on OL, the other 3 spots are wide open. Jamil Viaud is a Junior College transfer and is listed at 6'4" 273 lbs (I assume that is what he weighed at the end of last season). 4 freshmen are in the mix, as are 2 redshirt freshmen, a sophomore, and a few juniors.
-Mandela Lawrence-Burke & Raymond James made the switch from DB to WR in spring ball, with Lawrence-Burke flashing in some of the practices.
-Kavious Price & Trey Harrell were mentioned by Lewis as the 2 most consistent WRs in spring ball.
-Antwan Dixon is back on the roster, so it will be interesting to see if he can get into shape, stay healthy (he has a hamstring injury that is nagging in the early part of the summer) and what playing weight he will be at once the season opens.
-All TE's & WR's brought in by Lewis/staff in this 1st class stand 6'3", 6'4", & 6'5" which is a big change from the previous staff, which mostly had 5'10" & 5'11" WR's.

24-hour Flash Sale on tickets! Discounted about 40% each game. Frankly, that's where they should be regularly.

Coach Lewis says coaches, players and staff have signed a contract to let their beards grow until the bowl game. Fans are encouraged as well.

I hope it doesn't go this long:

A beard can grow pretty long in 16 months. I just don't see it happening until 2019 but would love to be wrong.

Good Grief! So their beards will go down to their chest. That will be a nice look for recruiting. Oh and IF we ever make a bowl game will he cut his beard prior to the game? It will not be a good look as he goes on interviews to leave the program with his bid in hand for the 65th bowl game? You know the Velveeta Cheese Bowl in sunny Hoboken where we will match up with Fargo State College.

Two more weeks and I will be sitting in Memorial Stadium getting my first dose of the Flash Fast era.

RE: KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
In following Allen Moff's reports via his Q & A with Coach Lewis, here is what I have taken away.

-KSU has 3 solid RBs - Shaw, Rankin, Matthews
-OL is thin and just got thinner - Gregoire suffered a season ending knee injury, Warnock is the starting center and Marinelli & Viaud are the starting tackles (glad Lewis/staff have 4 verbal commits in the 2019 class for OL, I would grab 2 or 3 more)
-QB battle between Barrett & Crum still isn't settled, but the following 4 WRs are making plays in camp: Harrell, Dixon, Carrigan, & Price @ WR
-All of the returning players who were starters or received a lot of snaps on defense from Haynes/staff are playing very solid in the new 3-4 defense, with Parker, Sherald, & Marshall @ CB, Faulkner @ OLB, Eboigbe & Majette @ DE, Bahr & Jones @ ILB, Morris @ NT, Peters, Ray, & Hines @ Safety
-Newcomers or returners at a different position making an impact on defense are Jordan Silva @ DE & Kesean Gamble @ OLB,

Nate Monnin is transitioning from TE to OG due to the injuries on the OL.

Saw that he was the one that came to the coaches and offered to make the switch. Selfless sacrifice. Love it!

RE: KSU Football 2018 fall camp/season
Anyone know if Gamble is going to be a full time LB this year or if they're planning on using him as the short distance back again? Shaw's a good sized back so I assume he probably takes that role?

Also, anyone know if there is a definitive third string qb or is that up for grabs? On paper Will Phillis seems like the logical choice. The O line was not good last year, and there isn't much reason to expect that to change. So the sad reality is who ever wins the QB job will be lucky to be standing when we get to the Mac schedule. The first string QB didn't make it there either of the last two years.
