RE: Predictions
Overheard in the LA Airport as we are waiting to depart for Sydney when sitting behind offensive staff:

"Why don't we line the tight end up on the strong side and then shift him to the weak side prior to the snap?"

"I hadn't thought of that...we could actually do that on every play".

"Do you think we could do that?"

Presumably they spent the rest of the season trying to concoct a formation with the tight end on the weak side.

LOL

My question. By the time we got the play in, would there have been time for the TE to shift without getting a delay penalty?

Pretty much. This is the same quality staff that called a short side fake on 4th and 16

Ditto that. Hope you can make it to some of the game threads this fall, too!

So, you think we lose the opener? but if that’s what it takes to finish on a 12 game win streak I’ll take it :)

Watching that replay is interesting. The only players that act like they know it's a fake are the holder, kicker, and play side wing. If the offensive line would have blocked/ walled off the defense the play might have worked. But the play was made by the players lined up inside the tackle. If it was a planned fake it was horribly designed- but the actions of the LG and LT make me question whether they knew it was a fake

What I don't know is whether there has been a significant drop-off in the quality of talent, recruited after 3 straight losing seasons, the last two really dreadful.

I don’t know why you think we have more talent than the rest of the CUSA... They consider us a creampuff and they’ve been more correct the last few years.

We homers (self included) always tend to over-estimate our players' talent I think.
By objective criteria, we certainly have LESS talent than most of CUSA right now.

RE: Predictions
Quick review of the 2017 year.

vs Stanford: 62-7 L
vs UTEP: 31-14 W
vs Houston: 38-3 L
vs FIU: 13-7 L
vs PITT: 42-10 L
vs Army: 49-12 L
vs UTSA: 20-7 L
vs LaTech: 42-28 L
vs UAB: 52-24 L
vs USM: 43-34 L
vs ODU: 24-21 L
vs North Texas: 30-14 L

I guess my brain wanted to forget the 2017 year, but I didn't realize that we had some relatively close losses: FIU, UTSA (down 10-7 at the half, but no 2nd half offense), LaTech (we were down 28-35 unit a pick-6 with a minute left), USM, and ODU (lost that game in the last 2 minutes).

I am not sure that the new coaching staff and special teams emphasis will be able to flip those losses, but I can understand a genuine optimism for a bowl eligible season. Turnovers and special teams were back breakers in all of those close losses.
