Basketball team to Spain
The men's team will be making a trip to Spain this August. They will visit 3 major cities and play 3 games. It will be good to get a look at all the new players before the season.

Here's a link to the announcement (and details on how to contribute to help defray the trip's expenses) sent to basketball supporters as an image in an email:

This thread would have been better if the title used "visiting" rather than "to", as the logical interpretation is that you omitted the word "transferring" for brevity.

This opportunity comes at a very good time for the program. It provides extra practice days and game day competition/experience for a team that will need the practices and game experiences to enhance their ability to compete early in the 2018/2019 season. This is a chance for all of us to put our $$ to help the program instead of just pontificating our collective opinions about what needs to be done to create a stronger basketball team. I will be making a contribution.

RE: Basketball team to Spain
Looks like the schedule is:

August 4: CB Alcobendas (Tulane beat them 72-71 last year, Illinois State won 121-82 in 2015)
August 6: CC Basketball Academy
August 8: Barcelona All Star

Can't imagine that any game will be streamed (although they really should try because I'm pretty sure Rice is taking one of the earliest, if not the earliest, international trips). To add to this, I somehow managed to watch a Nicholls State preseason stream from one of their games in the Bahamas last year. If Nicholls can do it, I don't know why Rice can't.

My brother was in Barcelona last week for an academic competition. He said the taxicabs were on strike (they're mad at Uber for just starting up there again recently, and in fact, many taxicab drivers are beating up the Uber drivers). Hopefully the team has pre-determined transportation set up in Barcelona at least.

That's very cool. Should be a fun trip for the players.

I can't help but think that this an effort to try and keep players from transferring out. College kids love this kind of stuff. Maybe organize an overseas trip every year. I may be way off with this, but I'm thinking that the athletics department is doing anything and everything it can to keep basketball players. If so, more power to them.

You can’t do it every year per NCAA regs... At least when you play games (see: Michigan Football).

I think the limit for international travel is once every four years for the teams.

Damn. I sure wish the NCAA had the balls to do something about the mass exodus of basketball players from G5 schools.

They've had the Men's hoops schedule for a while, any news on the Women's team schedule this season? The Women's hoops is probably going to be the best major sport Rice team this year.

I asked Tina about injuries, and all she would say is they're getting better. Mulkey has put on at least 30 pounds, and one of the players told me the freshman center was very good. They have a chance have a great year.
