Pretty much just means they spend enough on research correct? Surprisingly their freshman class profile is better than TTU or UH. Leaps and bounds ahead of our lowly CUSA brethren.

Middle 50% SAT
Rice 1460-1580

UTD 1210-1430
TTU 540-620 reading 530-620 math
UH 1120-1310

UNT 1060-1270
UTSA 1000-1210
UTEP 890-1130

UTEP has a 100% admissions rate supposedly. I know SAT doesn’t tell all, but it does show how different we are than everyone else in our conference. None of the students at Rice even apply to those schools why would they care about watching them?

Good for them - it's been the third-best public school in the state for a few years now. UT-Dallas attracted a few top kids from my HS class (who were planning on med/law/other graduate school expenses anyways) with great merit packages and allowing them priority for class and housing registration. It's still pretty much a commuter school, but I've heard it's making strides into slowly shedding that image

I care about watching Rice, not Rice's opponent.

My UTD exposure is pretty anecdotal. But over the past 5 years I've had 6-8 medical students that were UTD grads and they really stood out. Very well prepared.

Earlier this week I was talking to someone who works at UTD. I mentioned that I had heard that at one time it was colloquially known as the "University of Texas Instruments". He said that was very much its history: it started as a TI research campus, and three of the original buildings are named after TI's founders.

Too bad we don't play them in football. The MOB would have fun with UTI.

I care about watching Rice, not Rice's opponent.

And Rice apparently -- and quite stupidly -- long operated on the faulty assumption that all the rest of us were similarly curious oddities, blithely unconcerned with the quality and familiarity of our affiliates and the loss of things like tradition and rivalries.

You realize, do you not, that your oh-so-admirable and inelastic loyalty to Rice was born out of attending during the SWC days? You think that may have played a role? Can you even conceive of being 18 to 22 today, coming to Rice, and seeing the steady diet of "who?" that we've been reduced to? I don't blame today's students one iota for not coming out to see the schools we play. There was much reflected glory to be had in the strivings against Texas, A&M, Arkansas, etc., even in defeat. Not so much against this lot.

You can consider the past 25 years an experiment to see if it matters, greatly, to the vast majority of a given college's students and alumni who their team plays. Spoiler alert: it does.

Bully for you if it doesn't. Although, frankly, come off it already. It does for you too. If you want to claim that your investment level -- whether measured financially, emotionally, or whatever -- in Rice vs. CUSA is the same as Rice vs. SWC, I call BS.

Yeah, UTD is well known for automatic merit money, by the way, making it very attractive to high-stats middle class kids who don't qualify for enough FA to afford more well-known schools (if they even get in) and/or their home state's flagship.

They are not our academic peers, but they are our athletic peers. And CUSA is an athletic, not academic, conference. As long as they remain our athletic peers, they are whom we will have to watch.

If we want that to change, we have to change us.

That reminds me of the kerfuffle in the mid-1990s when it was realized that the UH Clear Lake campus is actually in the city of Pasadena. There were bills in the legislature to change the name to "University of Houston at Pasadena", with "University of Houston - Clear Lake at Pasadena" as a possible compromise.

And then there is the UNT radio station.
