Have to admit I was skeptical based on the HS video footage, but he looks really good. Strong handles in both directions, nice 3 point shot, nice ability to drive, good vision for assists and good size.

So far so good!

Alex Riley has him penciled in as a starter this fall.

Sure would ease the pain of losing Talley if he's as good as advertised!

Thanks for posting the video. If he's not ready to play significant minutes by conference, I don't like our chances at all. Based on his on the court demeanor/confidence, level of competition he's faced prior to college, and these highlights, I am very optimistic he is going to be ready.

I wish there was more footage on Gadsden, but as of now I'm thinking Toews is the leading that race for the starting spot.

So far, I have yet to see him miss a free throw...

RE: KAI TOEWS Jones Cup 2018
They will both play and may spend time together at times. It's a good problem to have, if you call it a problem. Bottom line, you have to have a killer shooter and that is up for debate right now so Ty could slide, if need be. It will shake out. Ty G. can score and play point so will get minutes regardless. The current 2 returning WG/WF were both north of 33% from 3,so it's a question of who is the main man at off guard and wing? Fornes and Taylor are both good players and will likely start the year at the off guard slots, but competition is there now with Sims, Estime or Gary.

Toews has some Goldsberry in him with a little modern day funk. Is he as tough? Well that would be hard to say yes to, but he definitely has game and we shall see. He has some throwback in him with excellent shot presentation from beyond the arc to boot. That's cool. He sees what's happening a split second before others do.

Defense will rule much of the time for the 1,2 and 3 PT. Hawks have a number of options now so let's wait and see.

Fornes has to develop more of a killer instinct IMHO. He's great shooter period and needs to embrace it. Jaylen need to buckle down and guard also to be the best Jaylen Fornes he can be. Ty is a good shooter/slasher that needs to keep doing his thing offensively, but embrace being a stopper too-that will keep you on the court young man. He can be a 2 way player that all teams love. I see this with him, he needs to see this with his quicks, but has to embrace it and started to last year .

It's going to be a fun ride this year with a full roster. Hopefully they will play together and surprise. They should be better for sure.

I'm a little late to this party, but having a number of these guys that are ready to play is a legit good problem to have. The key is defense. We're gonna have bodies to throw on the deck. I'm not saying I want us to be foul prone like we have been in the recent past, but having a number of capable guys at the point will surely bode well. Having Gary be our #3 option at best instead of #2 is a step up. Not trying to knock the young man, because he plays with a lot of heart. I just don't like him at the 1. I like him in a 2 role as a spot up shooter.

I'd like to see Gary be a little more of a "jump" shooter as he has a nice release. He has some hops, but it seemed that he didn't really spring into his shots all the time even though he made his share. Is it just me seeing this or am I wrong? I've always been a strong advocate for getting into the air before releasing it. It's just better on so many fronts including total release time and simply having a timing mechanism to work with. It doesn't have to be that much either, but I liked being about 8"' (at least) off the floor on mine before releasing it.

The walk on last year wasn't bad at the point either. Let's not forget about him because he actually won us a home game last year with his play.

I like the energy Jacque brings. I would not be surprised at all if he earns a spot in the rotation.

No matter who gets the starting point job, I hope that the relationship they have with Coach McGrath develops into a good one. If it does, then success on the court for the team will follow. Think about past coaches that were successful and the point guard they had - Coach Gibson had several (the Martin twins, Barry Taylor, etc.) Coach Eastman had Drew Phillips, coach Wainwright with Billy Donlon and coach Keatts with Talley et al. Not much can beat a coach on the sidelines and his extension on the court. Think about successful teams and the relationship each had between coach & point guard.

Barron Thelmon was a pleasant surprise as well and we can't forget about Goldsberry. Heck, Tomko had the talent but didn't have the supporting cast plus his game was a bit more for getting points rather than setting the table.

True about Goldsberry. Tomko did not have much of a supporting cast but he didn't have much of a positive relationship with the coach either. Or at least it didn't appear or sound like he did (a chorus of f-u to the coach didn't sound like he did).

This year's team is going to have a lot more depth than last years...and the coaches should have many more options from which to choose.

RE: KAI TOEWS Jones Cup 2018
On paper, we should be competitive in the CAA this year.

Right now, i'd go with this lineup

PG - Taylor/Gasden/Toews
2- Fornes/Estime/Gary
3 - Cylla/Sims
4 - Elmore/OÇonnell
5 - Cacok/Kalina

I believe the staff will go with experience where they can, and work the younger guys into off the bench relief, foul trouble help, and special situations. One of them could completely surprise with ability, and knock out an upper class player, but the tie goes to the older guy. Elmore may be the only exception, although he is older, his on the court experience is very limited. I know coach wants him to start, but OOC play will be a determining factor.

I can also see the players in the 2,3 and 4 spots rotating around, with Fornes and Estime moving into the 3 spot at times.

My pick for a surprise sleeper is Sims. He has the size, the shot, and the ability to handle the ball at a CAA level right off the bat. He could pry his way into a starting spot or significant PT by the time we hit CAA play.

IMO, a top 3 finish is well within our reach.

Toews at 3rd PG option, interesting.

RE: KAI TOEWS Jones Cup 2018
I don't see Taylor running PG. He was our most consistent wing player last year, and didn't see anytime at the 1. Also, it makes no sense to bring in two PGs if you already had one on your roster who still has two years of eligibility. I see Toews being the starter with Gasden and Brown fighting for backup minutes. Taylor and Fornes will play the 2/3. Cylla and Cacok as the front court. C.B. has already stated his intention to play Cylla as a stretch 4 to allow Cacok to work on the block one on one more this year.
