RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
I graduated HS in 2014 in the Springfield area. Looking for schools, I was very interested in NIU because of the recent success of the football team. I ended up visiting SIU, ISU, and the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater.

Ultimately, it was cheaper to go to school in Wisconsin than to go to NIU (almost 8-10 grand per year cheaper). Most of my classmates went to school in Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin for the same reason.

I can tell you that the cost is the main factor...but it's a cycle.

Not enough state funding > increased tuition > decreased enrollment > increased tuition because of decreased enrollment.

It's not like I wanted to leave, but it made quite literally no sense to pay more money to stay in-state than to go elsewhere and get as good of an education.

There is a serious amount of flight from the state of IL right now. I know that I won't be returning, as there are way more job opportunities and cheaper cost of living in WI.

This says it all. A very sad story. The State legislature should be embarrassed at how they are ruining this state. Best of luck to you, Illinoisan! 04-cheers

Illinois needs to close down some of its universities. The overhead is causing funding issues which means tuition increases. U of I accepted more foreign students to increase revenue. Close a couple of state schools and redirect funds to others

That's not the way the IL state legislators would do it. They would close the schools and redirect the money to other projects. Madigan would decide where to spend it.

That pretty much says it all, crazy.

Yeah, my school, University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, is at least 50 percent Illinoisans. The school has capitalized on all of the Illinois students fleeing the states insane tuition costs.

How has the state let it get so bad, that tuition at out of state universities is thousands and thousands cheaper than in state schools? Insanity.

RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
I was hoping my daughter would choose University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the same cost reason;this was 2 years ago. This cost topic was a shock to me. With Wisconsin having a good education system, cheaper than Illinois, i wonder why the outflow of student isn't greater, in other words, why would a student stay here and pay more? It's a hard answer, very individual.

But i would concur with an earlier poster, Illinois needs to find a way to drop cost and reduce universities. Hate to say it, but if the state legislature actually considered this and it came up, closing NIU in favor of ISU or UofI expansion, I would applaud that action. But as a life long Chicago resident, I know that will never come to pass, the schools are public employee, and local resident, jobs engines. Our political system won't do something that painful, unless a real crisis occurs, and we still are not close to what i think of as 'real crisis' .

SIU is dealing with controversy about...wait for it...expansion of their 2 campus (Carbondale, Edwardsville) system; with the backdrop of lower attendance and shrinking funding, how could anyone consider SIU needs 2 sets of campus adminstrators at twice the administrative costs. It's just so misguided.

ok, off my soap box...actually feels abit like fall now and i hope to see a NIU fb game soon!

It's a problem that isn't just related to Illinois, but our situation is exacerbated due to the budget standoffs.

https://www.demos.org/publication/unaffo...an-student

"Average tuition at public 4-year colleges across the country is $9,970 a year in 2017, which is double the sticker price ($4,970) in 2001, and two-and-a-half times as high as the average ($3,790) in 1991." This is because voters greedily decided this was okay to, years after benefitting from low tuition and high public funding by previous generations, slash funding for the next generation so they could enjoy lower taxes for themselves. Which is sad, because public education is the best way to upward economic mobility. Instead, we're saddling kids with a mortgage worth of debt, which results in delaying home buying, delaying starting a family. All so older people can have lower taxes and take longer vacations.

It's too easy for politicians looking for cuts to target public ed, and students don't vote, don't donate to their campaigns, so why not?

https://money.cnn.com/2017/06/29/pf/coll...index.html
Quote:Funding for state colleges fell 61% for the 2015-2016 school year, according to data from the Illinois Board of Higher Education. The schools received slightly more money for the most recent school year, but it still was about half of what was received before the cuts -- and was mostly spent on unpaid bills from the previous year.

Lawmakers last approved a state budget in June of 2014. Democrats control the state legislature and continue to spar with Republican Governor Bruce Rauner about how to address the state's financial crisis, which stems from years of fiscal mismanagement. Currently, Illinois has $15 billion of unpaid bills and $251 billion in unfunded pension liabilities.

Since 2015, lawmakers have funded colleges and other state services with a patchwork of emergency payments that are paltry compared to previous years. It could happen again if lawmakers don't approve a budget before Saturday.

The state's 12 public universities and 48 community colleges have been tightening their belts since before the drastic cuts. State funding, which typically makes up one-third of a school's budget, had already decreased 41% from 2002 to 2015.

Don't be foolish.

Illinois' income tax rate from 1991 - 2010 was 3%. From 2011 - 2014, it was 5%. From 2015 - June 30, 2017, it was 3.75%. From July 1, 2017 to present is is 4.95%.

http://www.revenue.state.il.us/TaxRates/...rYears.htm

The rate was flat for nearly twenty years and then increased dramatically for three. During that time, funding was cut, as you note above. So, the funds were shifted elsewhere.

The problem in Illinois isn't a revenue issue -- it is a spending problem. King Madigan has ridden the state all the way down.
