For the first time since 1963, the American League ...
... leads the National League in the all-time All-Star game standings. AL now leads 44-43-2.

As I grew up in the 1970s, a time when the NL won literally every year, I never thought this day would come. In 1987, the NL had a 17-game lead (37-20) and as recently as 1996, the NL had a 14-game lead (40-26).

But since 1997, the AL has gone 18-3-1 to retake the lead.

Go AL! 02-13-banana

Yeah, as a NL fan the last 20 years of the all star game has been brutal for the most part. I posted in my home base thread the records spanning back the previous 60 games (not including last night):

1998-2017: AL 16 NL 4 3
1978-1997: NL 11 AL 9
1960-1977: NL 18 AL 2

EDIT: I didn't catch the tie game from 2002 so the previous 20 should be AL 16 NL 3.

Who cares, that's like keeping track of how many times you get to a red light or green light. Totally random and even if one league is better than the other, neither team cared about playing in the ASG except for one brief era.

Well I'm certainly not staying up nights thinking about this. I'm a baseball fan and like many other fans, stats and numbers are a part of it. To each his own.

Sorry if it came across rude but at the same time, it's a stat of basically zero consequence. Even as it was played with home field advantage in the WS on the line, the ASG was never taken fully seriously by the players and managers. That one league has a better record than the other doesn't matter because both leagues have been roughly equal historically and even beyond that, the game doesn't matter.

A better stat to bring up is all-time record in interleague play, including World Series play.

I didn't take your comments as rude but obviously other fans do care about these things. I don't agree that players and managers don't care about this game - athletes are competitive by nature. This is an opportunity for them to play against the best of the best and against players that they don't normally have an opportunity or familiarity with. Did you watch the whole game? Did you see the reaction of players for each team after a home run was hit or how hard and determined some of the pitchers were throwing and their facial expressions (Max Scherzer for example)? I'm not saying that players and managers dream of winning the all star game but don't tell me that they don't take it that seriously or want bragging rights for the year. This all star game blows away the NFL's and NBA's game in my opinion because of the rich tradition and competitiveness of it.
