From his twitter feed, he won the FG competition and the 'best kicker' award at the Rice camp - and 9 days later won the FG and kickoff competition at the Colorado camp.
Looks like he can bomb kickoffs. Averaged 75+ yards at a couple camps in addition to the FG awards you mentioned.
Great news.
Next season, I don't care as much about wins as I do seeing smarts, precision, and attitude. If we somehow managed 6 wins and a bowl berth, I think things could really take off in a major way.
+1. For sure these teams will excel. Every drop will be demanded. Let's beat PV, play UH tough as hell, and upset Hawaii. We'll talk after that...

Nice article on Garrett Braden. I didn't realize his school also has 3 offensive players who have committed to major schools (the QB Drew Pyne has committed to Notre Dame, and tackles Jack Stewart and Jack Conley have committed to Michigan and Boston College). Pyne is going to be a junior but the others are all seniors.
I'm guessing they're going to have a nice team.

I agree. The qualitative aspects are going to be more important than the quantitative. But if we see smarts, precision, and attitude, I think we will play in a bowl.

I agree, all those things would likely bring more wins. How many more, is the question. So if we don't play in a bowl, what does that mean? Because I don't think we are. I think 3 wins is the over/under.
BTW, since we have 13 games, don't we need 7 wins to bowl?
I think, at some point, we will have a lineman jump offside on first and goal. At some point we will see the QB float a pass to the cornerback when the WR is streaking free. At some point we will call a TO (or two) in the first quarter. At some point we will get sloppy play, or play calling we don't agree with.
I hope not, but our guys are still human. Bloom is still human. It will be interesting to see the Parliament reaction when some of these things happen.
I know that I am supposed to be the optimist, but here I will have to take the pessimist role until shown otherwise. I am not at all sure that attitude will survive a brutal September. The person I hope has the smarts is the play caller.
At this point, I just hope Bloom doesn't clap his hands when encouraging players to do better.
We are in the honeymoon phase. I just hope we are still happy with the marriage in December.

Oddly for you, OO, I think you're selling Bloomgren and this new coaching staff short. I think 4.5 wins is the over-under, and given we play in CUSA West, I don't think 6 wins and a bottom bowl bid is an unrealistic goal. Dramatically improved discipline, accountability and execution will go a long way, as will sticking to a consistent offensive approach. Also, as I've alluded to previously, I think Coach Lembro and our new emphasis/focus on special teams play will result in an incremental win or two or even three.
I'm not expecting miracles, and we don't have the talent or depth this year to compete with Top 50 caliber programs, but the majority of our schedule is against bottom quartile teams against whom we should have a fighting chance, even if as underdogs.

Lembo. I’m pretty sure Vegas has our over under at 2.5 or 3.5. You do realize that we lost every senior that felt they could play somewhere else off a team with 1 win? Our recruiting classes have been bottom of the conference for several years. It’s not like the teams we’re playing aren’t trying to win. Their coaches prepare all offseason and try to instill discipline too. You’re saying 7 wins with a QB who’s thrown 1 pass in a game the last 5 years isn’t a miracle? Because winning 7 games with our what we’ve seen from our current QBs would definitely be a miracle.

I'm as big a Bloomgren optimist as any, but our roster is just not in good shape, especially with the losses of the grad transfers, the medical DQ guys, and Padgett. We're lacking defensively especially. We're going to have to rely on quite a few freshmen to play immediately. And QB is still a giant question mark.
That said, we can beat PVU, Hawaii, and UTEP for sure, and I expect us to. FIU, UTSA, and Old Dominion are possibilities if it really comes together. Anything beyond that is a pretty big stretch this year.

I think maybe some of us are a bit starry-eyed. I am more in the "show me" mode.
After all, he has zero wins so far. Some of the comments remind me of teenage girls gushing about their new boyfriend.
don't get me wrong - I think Bloom is very likely better than Bailiff. After this season, I hope we can remove the "very likely" qualifier. And I don't doubt that we will start the year with a really good attitude, as we have done so many times before. I think we will need more than a win over PV to come out of September with that attitude intact. I wonder what "precision" means? Does it mean long drives on the ground, a la Hatfield, or a 75% completion rate? No motion penalties? Kind of a vagyue concept.
Bottom line is of course wins. You are more optimistic than me. Doesn't mean either of us is wrong - could be both of us.
since we play 13 games, don't we need 7 wins for a bottom bowl? PV, UTEP, and five others?
I am hoping for a good season. We all need it. But I am not laying any bets on it, either with my wallet or my mouth. I am hoping we will all be happy after the season, whether it ends with the 13th game, or with a minor bowl.
Looking forward to the actual season and an end to speculation.

Pulled it from the post about about making a bowl. But I think 6 is just as unlikely at 7. There was only 1 program in the country worse than us last year, I’m not sure we can call any schedule weak. We ARE the bottom of the barrel and our talent level has dropped since last season.

RE: [split] Mike Bloomgren's 2nd Rice recruiting class
Remember what Graham did in the short time he was here and he had a even more competitive schedule that currently exists. I think if we are at least competitive against LSU, Houston, and Wake Forest (still have a chance to win in the fourth quarter) instead of the game being over after the first quarter or half would be a step forward. It is hard to predict how many wins this season but 3 wins are expected and 6 wins would be fantastic.

While 7 wins would certainly make us bowl eligible, teams with 6-7 records would have bowl priority over those teams a) reclassifying to D-1 and b) 5-7 teams, ranked according to their APRs.
Here are the priorities (in descending order) that the NCAA uses after all conventional 6-6 or better teams have been slotted into bowls and bowl vacancies still remain:
Source: https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...-the-bowls
Quote:1. Teams that finished 6-6, but had a win over an unqualified I-AA school.
It is well known that teams are allowed to count a win over a I-AA school, but it is less known that not every I-AA school qualifies for this provision. The win only counts if the I-AA opponent meets certain scholarship guidelines. (Note: those guidelines were not included in this article.)
2. Teams that finished 6-6, but have two wins over I-AA schools.
3. Teams that finished 6-7 in a regular, 13-game schedule. (Hawaii and any team that plays at Hawaii are allowed to play 13 regular season games.)
4. Teams that are in the process of reclassifying to I-A and finish with a record that would have made them eligible otherwise.
5. Teams that finish 5-7 in APR order.

"upset Hawaii"- barf..
I understand where we are as a program, but still....barf
+1

Oh, so we have a chance?
If we really want to go to a bowl, lets win 7 games and not have to wait on the charity list, behind 6-6 teams with two wins over unqualified opponents.
Truth is, we all have our thoughts on how the team will do under the new coach(es). Personally, I think 6-7 without a bowl would be an outstanding result. I would be deliriously happy with that result, for more reasons than one. But regardless of how we do in 2018, we must do even better than that in 2019.
Soon now, we will have our annual prediction thread. I will be curious to see how many people predict that we will have 6, 7, or more wins.

RE: [split] Mike Bloomgren's 2nd Rice recruiting class
I would love for this team to go to a bowl, but we have real depth issues on Defense; I expect a lot of freshman to play to help alleviate the concern. Also, it appears that we are playing a base 3-4 so the interior lineman depth should be bolstered. We really need that offensive line to to gel. 13 games makes for a very long season.

Very few I'd imagine.
We're just saying that 6 wins is POSSIBLE --- and that that result would send a strong message to recruits and to us that this coaching staff is really as good as we'd hoped they'd be.
I'm also thinking 3 wins is much more likely.

It will be interesting to see the predictions. Some may quote ranges, like 4 to 6.
September will tell the tale.
