RE: OT: Best show nobody is watching, pimp away
I thought The Americans was an excellent series that I could hardly wait to see each week. But the finale just left me really disappointed. I thought that was a truly weak ending, especially with FBI agent, Stan, just letting them walk away. I expected better. Either they get killed, or they get away to lead a life as true Americans. Almost anything other than the way they ended it.

I thought the same thing. In fact, I thought going back home would have been completely off the table for Elizabeth after admitting to her handler that she killed the KGB officer from the Embassy. And maybe even for Philip too considering he basically abandoned his duties. Seems like their fates would be in jeopardy to go back.

I also thought they would tie in the fall of the Soviet Union into all this. They really left that dangling - which could have been a nice way to end the show - maybe even piping in some real footage from fall of the Empire. I mean weren't they leading us up to that the whole season with Oleg's return to DC?

I too was disappointed for those reasons. Having them with "no home" and nowhere to go would have been a better ending. Can't go home. Can't stay here. What do we do.

As for Stan I didn't mind that scene as much. I mean I'm trying to put myself in those shoes. I've spent a good portion of the last seven/eight years of my life stopping these people only realize that the person who had become my best friend and a family that had become very close were actually the people I was after. Even if he assumed it was possible having that confirmed would seem to be hard. What would I do? What would you do?

But year overall I could have seen it going a lot of different ways that would have been a better way to close it out. Still really enjoyed the heck out of this show though.

With that said, "if you liked the Americans you would also like.....?" Looking for recommendations to fill that gap.

Yeah, I thought there would be a Bonnie and Clyde style running gun battles. Nope. And really, only one surprise turn in the whole finale. That said, having just graduated from college in the early 80's, I really enjoyed the series and how well they captured the look and feel of the period.

I was disappointed in the finally of The Americans. I thought at least one of them would end up dead and the other captured. It leaves the future of the kids in question.

RE: OT: Best show nobody is watching, pimp away
If they could have basically the same ending, but without Stan letting them walk away, I might think the ending was ok. But having a counter espionage FBI agent let two known soviet spies (who were known to have committed multiple murders) just walk away -- I don't think so. A much better outcome would be Philip and Elizabeth just barely giving Stan the slip and Stan being really pissed that they got away. Even better if Stan was wounded in a shootout with them.

As to the kids -- they were raised as Americans. Henry being left behind was fitting. Paige, making the decision to get off the train seemed right also. We are left not knowing what will become of her, but moving on as an American and rejecting the soviet life she experimented with seems right.

Now for Philip and Elizabeth. Maybe the ending for them is better that I originally thought, but they are in for a rough ride. I see their time in the USSR as being very short, with the KGB terminating them as traitors.

BTW -- was Renee a spy? I think so, and Stan is going to have keep a close eye on her.

Overall, still don't like the ending as written.

Americans over. What is next? My cable was out for a few days. So I started Breaking Bad over again. What a magnificent series! Maybe Better Call Saul will start up again soon.

I would agree with you about Stan, except the entire series has shown that Stan is weak. He had the affair with Nina. He always has let his feelings guide him, so it makes sense that his friendship with Phillip would outweigh his duty as an FBI agent.

I love the show. The acting, writing, music choice superb. I went back and watched the pilot episode on amazon video. I may go through it again.

They announced this week that Better Call Saul is back in August.

Westworld continued to provide twists to the end of the season. The scenes after the credits promise even more provocative twists next season. There is so much depth in this series. I don't think I have completely digested it all. It will probably need to watch it again.

Succession is an insanely different series. Caution, profanity and adult situations even to the point of being inappropriate. The characters are all ill prepared for their parts in the world of big business. What do you expect from a series with Will Ferrel as executive producer. I'm watching just to see what will happen.

Regarding Westworld, I like a show that makes me think and challenges me. But with Westworld, I’m not sure I want to work that hard.

Lost In Space on Netflix. I grew up watching the old Lost In Space. It was silly, but I enjoyed it. They came out with a movie in 1998 by the same title, which completely sucked. But they now have a new Lost In Space series, completely updated, not silly like the original, and it's actually not bad.

Tried to watch it twice and didn't make it through the first episode both times.

Just watched the movie Wind River on Netflix based on my siblings' recommendation. Wow, that's a really, good underrated film I had never heard of. I'm surprised it didn't get any Academy Award nominations last year. I'd describe it as Silence of the Lambs on an Indian Reservation in Wyoming.

One new project the writer and director of this film (Taylor Sheridan) is involved with is the TV Show Yellowstone which is on the Paramount Network (which used to be known as Spike TV). Has anyone seen that show? It's gotten good reviews as well.

Off Topic: My cable bill is getting ridiculous again. If I can't talk them down again, I might cut the cord. I view this thread as a potential to fix the one problem I have with cutting the cord. No channel guide to select what you want to watch over the various shows available to stream. The other problem is what services do you stream to get your shows yet not be back up there in price with the cable. Not to derail this thread but if any have guidance on either of those points, please let me know.

clt recommends checking out dvds from your local library.
