It would have cost them nothing to go to Marla, tell her that these cuts were coming, and offer her a chance to retire gracefully. She would have hated it, but she's been around long enough to know that when they want you gone, they'll find a reason for you go get gone. Instead they crapped on her in public, and not only hurt and angered her, they pissed off her friends, and she has a *lot* of friends at UAB.

Stupid choice by "leadership". Yet another top down mandate that did far more damage than good.

You write that like you think a mistake was made. It was quite deliberate, and intended to send a message. Perhaps not the same message as was received.

I have real-world deadlines to meet but have many thoughts on this and will share them in a day or two.

Please do. And no, if anything I think she was first on the list, deliberately. A person of her stature and reputation does not end up in the shitcan by accident.

She may have been given that opportunity and declined to sign the non disclosure...

Not my business one way or the other, but I was curious if it was long term employees or newbees or just certain departments, etc.

Reid probably had 30+ years in and considering time for the Kaleidoscope, etc. 35+ years.

Marla had 20 years in at UAB and 32 years in the system towards retirement.

Curious too about this. In academia and particularly at UAB it is often the case say to a well repected long term department head appears to lose their effectiveness and is asked to move to a made up position as a face saving move for both parties.
The title of "senior associate athletics director for strategic initiatives and engagement" is typical of such a made up position. The major sign would be did such a position exist/filled by a body before Marla. does anyone know?

I think it was a made up new position.

It was created for her... and then deleted less than a year later.

These moves have been described as "fiscal responsibility", but I can't help but suspect that getting rid of long time, Green and Gold to the bone Bartow hires is a feature, not a bug.

& I would guess that when these removals occurred that UAB was in the best shape financially and the most fiscally responsible that it had ever been.

Removing people that help bring in the money isn't a good move.

Of course, Mark knows this & his goal isn't truly to be fiscally responsible.

Between planting seeds of doubt in peoples minds and couple that with the Savannah State possible attendance and ‘Mark will of done a lot of damage in just a couple months. Doesn’t matter who said do it. He is AD and he claims it’s all his call. We really need to do all we can to get people to that August 30 game more than ever.

Glad someone on the media put this out. Anyone have any insight on if the attention being given to these decisions is making Mark uncomfortable?
