Perhaps. He would then be the one signing the funding bills into law and he would automatically be part of the board.

If Ivey gets elected nothing will change. Period

Montgomery has corrupted many good men. I doubt anything will change.

Even if Walt is elected, he will be a Democratic Governor with a lege full of Bama Republicans. They're not going to support him unless it is worth their while somehow. He's going to have to push for smart legislation, smart enough that the voters get behind him and push their legislators to pass it. It won't be easy.

I doubt even Walt would propose BOT reform. But he can exert influence by deciding to actually attend and preside over BOT meeting instead of delegating the task to a president pro tem and never showing up as is the current practice.

The power of the President pro tem is enshrined in the bylaws of the board. He could preside over meetings and run the procedural motions of the meeting itself but he wouldn't be able to take away the pro tem's power to set the agenda or strong arm and convince the rest of the members to vote how he wants. Maddox isn't getting elected anyway, Alabama is about 100 years behind that curve right now.

There are smarr ways to accomplish the same goal...dont mention UA...simply propose following Florida's lead in higher education governance...no one can deny how their universities have flourished since the change...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that basically was putting all universities under one governing board (maybe with their own subordinate boards?). That's how Georgia does it (although without any subordinate boards)

I don't know how that would fix anything in Alabama. In Florida and Georgia, the rival/competing schools have enough clout that they can't get steamrolled. I don't see how essentially merging the UA System with the Auburn System and adding in the other four year schools does anything about that. UAB, South Alabama, Troy, etc don't have the political power to shine in that kind of structure. The Alabama and Auburn contingents would make sure that they don't step on each other, but they would suck all the money and wind out of every other four year school.

The answer needs to be each school is absolutely independent and one overarching board that approves academic programs. We do need a mechanism that makes sure that there aren't 50 medical schools in the state, but there doesn't need to be a mega-board micromanaging the real estate and extracurricular details of every school in the state

To be fair, Auburn has also been the victim of Alabama's oppression - not nearly to the extent that UAB has, but bammer having the only law school helped them keep Auburn down.

RE: Once again we have stepped on our own #@%^
The goal of any change in higher education governance is to obtain change from the "fiefdom cultural priority" of the present system. The present system of protecting MY university from YOUR university has gotten the whole into a less desirable situation in national terms. Because the state can't maintain an adequate level of funding for its public education (K through grad school), it must constantly raise tuition annually just to keep what it had a decade ago in place.

The SETF for 2019 is still $200 million below the SETF for 2007. That is bragged about by Montgomery since the 2016 budget was about $500 million less than 2007. So far the state has gotten away with "robbing Peter to pay for Paul", but both "Peter" and "Paul" have suffered from the consequences of long term reduced funding.

There are 50 states and some U.S. territories that have their own public school systems that include a system of state universities. We are not faced with "reinventing the wheel" here when we try to find an alternative (and superior) way to run state schools. Just as political change was resisted in Alabama during the 1950s and 1960s by the powerful, the present system will be defended by those for whom the present system gives great power that they fear they will lose with any changes.

Do you think that Auburn is going to form their own law school? Or do you think something interesting is going to happen to one of the four law schools in Alabama besides UA that the above poster doesn’t seem to think exist?

UA in Tuscaloosa has the only STATE Law School but there are several private law schools just in our metro area. Cumberland at Samford, Miles College School of Law and the B'ham School of Law come to mind. I would not be shocked if the next state School of Law was built at UAH since it is in a growing metro area with less competition. USA has already gotten the state's second public School of Pharmacy to go with the one at AU.

In times like these you would like to see a Scarbinsky article.

Not that it would solve anything, but it would shed light on things.

1) Forgive me for not mentioning Cumberland, BSoL, Faulkner, and Miles and all of the great efforts their graduates have gone to in keeping Auburn & UAB down.
2) Quick google shows nothing recent other than Auburn having a pre-law program, but I do know schools in Auburn's situation have been purchasing programs from other schools.

Just about every college has a pre-law curriculum of some sort. When I was at Bama in the 60s, there was a pre-law course of study in the Colleges of Engineering, Business and Art & Sciences. Pre-med has the same variations at the undergrad level. I heard that Dr Champ Lyons sent his son to GA Tech for pre-med, but he went into law and recently retired as a justice from the Alabama State Supreme Court. Both lawyers and physicians can find success in politics at all levels.

Has BSoL ever gotten accreditation sufficient for their degree to count outside the state?
