No news on Pope? Bragga wouldn't keep 2 assistants, would he?

Beat me to it sir, but great news regardless

@MarkBermanFox26
College baseball sources: New @RiceBaseball Coach Matt Bragga (@BraggaMatt) will keep assistant coach Paul Janish on his staff.

Good news. I suspect (but don't know) that Bragga will bring in a new guy as his primary #1 assistant.

RE: Paul Janish to Stay
He better hire a pitching coach and recruiting director with deep ties to Texas and Houston high schools. That was Pope. As I said, I like Paul a lot, but he has very little coaching experience, and has no experience recruiting.

This sucks. Pope will never get to see the guys he recruited step foot on campus.

So goes coaching.... but I scratch my head at this decision. As mentioned Pope had the Houston HS ties and was the recruiting coordinator. Unless we get a recruiting coordinator from another Texas university I don’t really understand this. Janish was just fielding correct?

Cruz Jr will essentially be batting coach for 2 of the players next year (plus Cruz Sr as well).

That's not a good thing. Nothing against the Jose's, but parents and grandparents should not be coaching their kids in college, unless they're on the coaching staff.

I like all 3 guys, but keeping Janish strikes me as a very good call. Member of the nat'l championship team. solid pro career. giving that a chance makes a lot of sense.

I'm sorry about the other guys if it turns out that they are, indeed, out.

This is great news. Janish must have good coaching skills or potential for WG to have thought so and for Bragga to agree. He could turn into a head coach in waiting if Bragga starts getting calls from P5 schools in a few seasons (like say, Kentucky). Former player/national champion shortstop, played and coached under Wayne, played in the Bigs, no controversial bathroom comments. Loves Houston and Rice. Should help Bragga with understanding Rice and with recruiting in Texas.

Again, I like Paul a lot, but he has absolutely no experience in recruiting, and has no current ties to Houston and Texas high schools....and he has but one year of actual coaching experience at any level. Yes, he provides continuity and will certainly help Bragga understand Rice, but let's not forget that Pope is also a Rice grad. As I pointed out in another thread, Bragga has built his reputation as an offensive guru. TTU's pitching has been even worse than ours the past several seasons, and against a much weaker schedule. I truly hope he has a name pitching coach in mind, and one who not only has strong ties to Texas and Houston high schools, but has experience as a recruiter.

Yeah, another guy with absolutely no D-1 coaching or recruiting experience. Let's get real, people.

Andy doesn't have a degree. He would have come with Lance as a volunteer coach.

RE: Paul Janish to Stay
For what it’s worth Janish has been at Rice for a year now and likely has some relationship with our current recruits and targets.

But agreed, his HS connections in Texas are probably less than Pope’s.

Question (Owl1998 would probably know this well): Isn’t recruiting done more through select ball than HS these days?

Funny how Pope has long gotten minimal love from this board and now finally his value is seen, but too late.
