Why would anyone reintroduce a new type of helmet that you didn't have the money to pay for?
I'd much rather see us use the same uniforms (one road/one home) and spend any extra or saved $$ on marketing efforts to get more fans into the stands ... and/or donations in athletic department endowments et al.
Who beside the helmet manufacturers would think that different helmets would actually lead to substantial increases in attendance/revenue?
Uniforms are very, very important in recruiting believe it or not.

I am curious what the correlation is between recruits that care about uniforms and the recruits that care about facilities. My guess is that Rice hasn't been winning a lot of battles for those recruits.

Exactly... But if we improve in those areas, maybe we can get some of those guys?

Maybe Rice should focus on recruits that care about getting a quality education?

It's not an either/or proposition.

Agreed. So let me rephrase. Maybe Rice should focus on recruits who prioritize getting a quality education over having the coolest unis?
If Rice loses a recruit over uni styling, I'm guessing he was never Rice's to lose.

Even though he didn't get his undergrad degree from Rice, I'm happy to see a Rice guy getting his foot into the coaching door at Rice. Wish football would do the same to help out grads who want to coach. Baseball didn't do it for a long while, but I appreciated Graham bringing in a number of alums later in his coaching career.

Plenty of D1 schools offer both a quality education and cool uniforms.
Also, when it comes to helmets, designs are evolving to reduce concussion risk. Handing a player an older technology helmet sends the message that the school doesn't care if he gets brain damage playing for them. That would be at odds with the message about quality education.

I think he can be a good coach and recruiter. Knows the benefits of a school and environment like Rice more than most. But he can't be more than like 25/26, so he will probably be one of the youngest assistant coaches in the country.

Wow! Van Green from Video Coordinator to Asst Coach. Rice should be happy. They are saving a lot of money not hiring a legitimate Asst Coach.

Now that JK has both a new football and baseball coach, it’s basketball’s turn to get its budget raided.

after several years you finally learned how to spell!
1) what is a legitimate assistant?
2) how do you know his salary?

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
Rice basketball just posted some photos of the team working out. I believe Dylan Jones is in one of the photos so I'm assuming he's coming back for a 6th year. There is also a taller, white player in one of the photos who either has to be the Pacific transfer or is someone new we aren't aware of.

This is pretty standard for promoting within your staff. You are hired as a video coordinator or basketball operations director and you can work at practices but aren’t officially an assistant coach since the NCAA only allows three paid assistant coach positions. As your status increases (as well as your salary) you move to being one of the paid assistants. Not much different as being the volunteer assistant in baseball because you are allowed only two “paid” assistant positions.
Video coordinators and directors of basketball operations positions have always been used as a way to get people who want to become coaches "in the pipeline" for a coaching gig. I do not think the comment about "legitimate coach" is fair or respectful; however, you can clearly argue that a staff with relatively light experience such as Coach Pera's should have considered hiring an assistant coach with a lengthier track record, which also helps bring in other coaching experiences and influences.
If Coach Wilson would not have hired Omar Mance and Brent Scott, both of whom did not have any coaching experience at the time he brought them on during his last year at Rice, it is unlikely that either would have their jobs today, since many times these pipelines begin at the players alma mater. At the time Willis had 15+ years coaching experience at the D-1 level and the remaining assistant coach after Marty Gross and Todd Smith left was Marty Gillespie, and he had substantial coaching at different schools.
