Best markets left for XFL
Well the AAF has beat the XFL to some very promising markets but here is what I think are the best of what's left:

Dallas
Houston
Miami
Tampa
Oakland
New Orleans
Hartford
St Louis
Columbus
Louisville
Tulsa
Little Rock
Raleigh
Nashville
DC

I'm not going to lie--it's going to be tough. The AAF got some of the biggest and best non-NFL markets. If they are going to succeed they are going to have to cut out a niche in some NFL markets, roll the dice on some cold weather markets, and draw big in their sub-35 markets.

A cold market team in the league could work--you would just have to schedule away games for weeks 1,2, and 4 and hope for decent weather in week 3.

If you are going for an NFL market you need to go for the warm weather ones in the top 15 metro areas.

Americans have seemed to have been extremely resistant about NFL alternatives after the USFL went defunct. I don't think either league gets to year 4.

I think that fans might say they want year-round football, but they don't really want to spend much time and money on minor-league football for 3 or 4 months after the Super Bowl. Spring football has to compete for sports fan audience and money with March Madness, then the start of the MLB season, and then the NBA and NHL playoffs among a lot of other things.

Maybe if they market it properly, spring football can find a niche audience, but not a major league sized audience.

Charlie Ebersol made some great points at the AAF announcement. Lots of Americans watch football and many sports fans exclusively watch football but it's season is short. There's also a surplus of football players out there.

40,000 people might show up for a given college game in which only a small handful of players will end up on NFL rosters. Why wouldn't you that same group of players draw similar numbers in placed in a city that doesn't currently have professional football?

I'm optimistic that if they are smart and can put a decent product on the field and engage fans they can draw decent life audiences to the stadiums and a niche national following through the app and CBSSN.

They need to sell fans on the idea of a football experience that's affordable where the players are striving for a shot on the big stage.

I think that's the goal. Attract the folks who don't follow basketball or hockey and hopefully get some deeper penetration in the cities where the teams are located.

Heh.... I figured they wouldn't even start if they didn't have the financial backing in place to go 3 years.

The original XFL could have gone much longer but didn't. People are not in the mood for mediocre football imo.

RE: Best markets left for XFL
I think the XFL realizes that to be successful they are going to need to wait it out and understand they are going to have losses before they make profits. At the AAF announcement they announced a 10 year plan and the XFL similarly needs to have a long game.

I read an interesting theory. Common sense says Ebersol and McMahon were working together then split over "creative differences". But what if the plan was for the AAF to launch first, work out the kinks, and then get absorbed into the more recognizable XFL. This allows for first year set backs and failures to not tarnish the XFL name and brand.

FWIW, St. Louis isn't as likely work since the dome has been converted to exclusively host conventions and other events. If there's a pro team looking to go there it isn't impossible they'd bring back the turf and host them, but the convention bureau makes more without the Rams than they did with.

They'd have to play at new Busch Stadium and we know that's not happening.
