RE: Bragga Press Conference
Note: Bragga graduated and played for UK. Three Rice grads (all from Lovett College, and at the same time) are on the UK faculty. One is chairman of the Math Department, one is an Anthropology professor, and one is a former Dean of the UK Medical School (and still I believe an adjunct professor for the UK Medical School).

So in the trade, it looks like Bragga is the player to be named later.

When I was writing articles for Rice News and Sallyport, I loved asking -- or hearing others ask -- tactical questions like that at post-game press conferences. I was interested not as a way to criticize the coach, but because I was genuinely interested in the thought process. I've always found decision-making to be the most fascinating aspect of baseball, and I find it fascinating to compare the decision-making of knowledgeable coaches and players to my own thoughts to see if I'm even close.

Unfortunately, those types of questions were disappointingly rare. As another post alluded to regarding TV reporters, most folks at press conferences are there to gather quotes, not to gain understanding. As for the answers, some coaches (including Coach Graham) were generally quite matter-of-fact in saying "It didn't work, but here's why we did it" or even "Well, we shouldn't have done that", while others (but fewer than you might expect) could be a bit defensive. And neither response is really good for generating soundbites: the former type tends to give answers that are more explanatory than snappy, while the latter type of answer is not interestingly quotable.

And of course, yesterday's event was not a post-game...

Because the Astros were off, the Rockets didn't draft until late 2nd round, the Texans are shut down before camp, UT is already home from Omaha, TT got eliminated late and I guess UH didn't do anything either.

Great day for a Rice presser.

Thanks for the link. A little more in depth than the presser, but still no questions about the staff or recruiting approach other than he thinks Rice is an advantage in recruiting.

Interview with Adam Wexler on channel 2 - no timetable for hiring assistant coaches.
In addition to Wayne, has spoken with Lance and Jose Cruz Jr.

He's also called all the returning players on the roster. In fact, did that as soon as he was announced last Friday.

Exactly. Even though yesterday wasn't a post-game, he's replacing one of the acknowledged masters of game management, so one or two questions that provided an opportunity for insight into Bragga's thought process would have been welcome.

Seems like a great hire.
