RE: New Softball Coach
Seems like a really good hire. Was the interim coach only ever going to be an interim?

Yes. When it was announced they were forcing Townsend out and giving her a different role in the athletic department to save face, they announced Ellis would be interim for 17-18 season. never considered anything more afterwards.

Why was Marla forced out? Hell, I thought she was still the coach!

RE: New Softball Coach
She had two consecutive losing seasons while Ingram had been AD. Ellis just made it a third consecutive season. we’ve got the facilities, it’s time to compete even outside of conference play. The gentleman we’ve hired was at South Alabama as an assistant as they made their run of years as a nationally ranked team. Obviously, coming from Oregon right now speaks for itself. He and his wife are Troy alums and Bama natives.

It looks like a great hire to me. Now, it’s time to make a change in baseball. No more complacency and kumbaya

Yup.

Honestly, I don't know if we can do better than Coach Shoop. It seems like every time Shoop gets an exceptional player, they get drafted. Shoop was the 80th coach ever to win 1000 games in a career. One of the other 80, Coach Polk, is a member of Shoop's staff. I'd rather they invest money into baseball. After current athletic projects are done, Mark is wanting to build a locker room for baseball & softball near their on campus fields.

Shoop is one of the most highly respected coaches in college baseball. There is a lot of competition for recruits in our state. We have a great coaching staff, but we're lacking in historical success and on-campus training/locker room facilities when compared to JSU, Samford, USA, and Troy.

Some money needs to be spent for baseball. This deserves its own thread.

I think we all got so enamored with the baseball team playing at Regions Field that we forgot about on-campus needs...

RE: New Softball Coach
Some of us thought that Regions in itself would have been enough right now to propel the program.

Well, I guess not.

With that said, let's remove the excuse of not having updated locker rooms, etc. by upgrading & going from there.

UAB baseball needs some of the same financial-type "angels" that enabled the football program to build new facilities.
Baseball is still handicapped by having to divide fewer scholarships among its student athletes to give financial support within NCAA limits. Few, if any, get the "full ride" scholarships common to basketball (16?) and football (85) recruiting.

Basketball is 13 for men, 15 for women I believe.

85 football.

Lots of partial scholarships for baseball. No idea why though.

D1 Baseball shares 11.7 scholarships for an average roster of 35 guys, and only 27 of them can count as a recipient. D2 baseball shares 9 scholarships on an average 40 man roster.
And Baseball players can receive other grant in aid money & different scholarships to bridge the gap, where Football and Basketball cannot. So a state with an education lottery, or a state with a low tuition can supplement their baseball teams easier.

AND NJCAA baseball gets 24 scholarships for 30 guys, and Alabama has some well known NJCAA baseball programs. Everyone of these guys think they are the next superstar for the Yankees, and they also know that the minors is the next stop either way.

So why go to UaB, where life is going to be hard, scholarships are few, and the coach is tough ?

This makes for a good discussion.

Thanks for the breakdown Phil. Pretty much explains why it is hard for us to compete in baseball.

This is a very informative write up. Thank you. The only thing that might be added is that states with an education lottery can only use the money from it for instate athletes. That means potentially more NCAA allowed money left for out of state recruiting. Possible example is that UGA might then be able to offer a sweeter scholarship deal for an Alabama recruit than any Alabama school can offer.

Just curious but how many of the eight state university teams in this year's College World Series have scholarships from income from their state's gaming concessions in addition to the regular NCAA allotment?
