RE: Off Season Poll and Discussion #4: The SBC's Premier Rivalry
Overall I think TXST is pretty content in the Sun Belt.

The one huge complaint though is we don't have any conference rivals at all and geography doesn't help with that. Any Sun Belt rivalry we form will have to come naturally and will take some time.

We really only have one true rival anymore and that's UTSA who we've played a grand total of 2 times so far in football.
We had multiple rivalries in the FCS, but none of those teams moved up when we did like App/GS did together.

And GS vs GAST has a longer history if you look at the many decades of non football sports that have been played. GS vs GAST is a rivalry, has a trophy, and mutual hate from both sides. It belongs on this list just like the other two instate rivalries.

I'd say Georgia Southern vs. Georgia State is one of the more underrated rivalries.

Well, you do have UT-Arlington every other sport as a rival. Just not in football.

How would TXST fans feel if UTA added a football program?

I have no idea how much of a rivalry Southern-State was back when both teams were in the TAAC, but I know it wasn't much of one when we were in the SoCon and State was in the CAA. In that way it feels like it's new.

It's been a great series in basketball so far, that's for sure. Maybe the closest thing there is to a rivalry in the sport.

At least to me it would feel like a rivalry then. Especially when they beat us in their first year of football. The whole non football thing doesn't do it for me. Maybe if they started beating us more. I could definitely see why it might be a rivalry for them since
1. They don't have football.

and 2. We seem to knock them out of conference tournaments a lot.

UTA isn't much of a rivalry to me either. I actually LIKE UTA. You aren't supposed to like your rival, you're supposed to hate them.

Things could change depending on what happens down the road, but despite our long history playing against each other in the other sports, there hasn't been much bad blood to speak of.

Texas State has to have close games and some more wins against SBC schools. App vs. Troy and App vs. A-State are evolving naturally because of close games and/or the fact that both have been really good. Geography has little to do with it.

If Texas State emerges with some more wins, they'll develop rivalries within a few short years.

The baseball history between LA and South Alabama is epic.

It started at the 1991 Regional in Baton Rouge, spilled over to a full scale brawl in 1992 and has been rolling ever since.

I remember speaking with someone on USA's staff several years ago who played at South. He said "These guys today actually think their rival is Troy. I had to set them straight. There's nothing like the Jags and Cajuns."

Interesting note: South AD Dr. Joel Erdmann was a player on that 1992 USA team. The brawl was something like college baseball has seen in years and years and years.

The Cajuns and A-State, as listed above, have had memorable football games. Adding to it: The Cajuns have own in Jonesboro twice in 25 years. A State has won in Lafayette once.

Dr. Erdmann was a GA on that staff, not a player. But I agree, that rivalry is what college baseball is all about. It brings out the best (and occasionally the worst) in each team.

No reason to believe the past want repeat itself. GS's history is a series of sustained super high highs and some lows with a constant rotation of coaches with varying philosophies. Those deviating from the t/o come and go sooner than those that don't but they all exit the Boro within two, three, or four years. The one constant is talent. Enjoy the harping on how we inhale vigorously. You'll be good crappy but you'll still be looking up our ars to see in front of you soon enough. [/i]

Ark St v ULL definitely used to be the premier match up before the latest round of realignment and ULL v ULM and Troy v USA are great in state rivalries as well.

Out of all of them, I'm going to have to pick App v GS for more than just homerishness. Even though it hasn't been competitive lately, its recognizable to most football fans who have followed D1-AA since the 80's and several of the games have carried post season implications and upsets with them. The game sells very well despite being on Thursday nights now and it's always a sure bet to be on an ESPN network. It's also one of the reasons that GS and App were added to the Belt as a package deal.

That was a hell of a game. Three different times late it looked like we were done for and then something happened to give us another chance. Somewhere on youtube there's also a very well-done video by App's video guys of that game.

Covington was a quality safety.

And that's still an offensive face mask that was uncalled.

But Socon refs and all.

I do think that's Chris Rogers (20) instead of Covington (28) though.

Current I would say App vs ArkSt they really seem to get pissy with each other lately.

Historically App vs GS goes way back.

When we have competent coaching again and they can maintain competent coaching it will be GS vs GSU.
