It's also on Wikipedia.

Yep, and the article I posted is where the phrase was cited.

Someone decided to take the authors title and take it out of context. So really, the citation is incorrect to begin with. The author never referred to this name at all.

I hate the fan names for both of Georgia Southern's rivalries tbh

Modern Day Hate is stupid too

Modern Day Hate is not supported by either AD if I recall correctly.. or any fan for that matter. That was just a shock jock looking for clicks.

I voted for App-GS, but like others have said, they really need to get their **** together.

I went rafting over the past weekend and there were 6 of us (4 in my party) in the boat along with the guide. During the trip he asked where everyone was from and the two guys behind me said "Ah, we're from Statesboro." My group, featuring another App grad, immediately raised hell, joked about dumping em out of the raft, etc. and the two Eagles didn't have much to say. I would have much preferred some friendly **** talking, but wasn't surprised at their lack of enthusiasm given Southern's recent lack of success on the football field.

I never want the Eagles to win, but the rivalry isn't as much fun when they're not even competitive.

A quick breakdown of USA v Troy:

They began playing in 2012 and the series is currently tied 3-3.

2012 Troy 31 USA 10
USA was still an FCS transitional team and the game was predictably one-sided.

2013 Troy 34 USA 33
USA took a six-point lead with 48 seconds left only to have Troy march down the field and score the winning TD with seven ticks on the clock.

2014 USA 27 Troy 13
USA gets their first win in the series as Larry Blakeney is sent off to retirement.

2015 USA 24 Troy 18
Neal Brown keeps it close in his first Battle for the Belt

2016 Troy 28 USA 21
Troy scores 15 fourth quarter points, the winning TD with 1:20 remaining, to pull out the win.

2017 USA 19 Troy 8
My personal favorite - An overconfident Trojan team, fresh off an upset at LSU, gets dominated at home by a fired-up USA defense. That loss probably keeps Troy out of the national rankings at the end of an 11-2 season.

As a Cajun fan, this is the only real conference rivalry I can think of from our perspective. It had sort of leaked over into basketball and recently into softball. As far as proximity, Mobile/USA is almost just as close as the rival people try to force on us (ULM). USA is the only school that has been in this conference longer than UL and stAte, so the history is there as well. Also both schools recruiting grounds overlap. And sometimes I feel we have more in common with South Alabamians than North Louisiana folks, perhaps due to proximity to the gulf.

App v GS has a long history of upsets and is played on national tv but GAST v GS gets pretty intense despite its short history and is played on rivalry weekend. So it's impossible to pick one.

Ark St v ULL definitely used to be the premier match up before the latest round of realignment and ULL v ULM and Troy v USA are great in state rivalries as well.

Out of all of them, I'm going to have to pick App v GS for more than just homerishness. Even though it hasn't been competitive lately, its recognizable to most football fans who have followed D1-AA since the 80's and several of the games have carried post season implications and upsets with them. The game sells very well despite being on Thursday nights now and it's always a sure bet to be on an ESPN network. It's also one of the reasons that GS and App were added to the Belt as a package deal.

[Image: e0fad71110ee1ab20c68a23bbc043341--app.jpg]

That was a hell of a game. Three different times late it looked like we were done for and then something happened to give us another chance. Somewhere on youtube there's also a very well-done video by App's video guys of that game.

Covington was a quality safety.

App vs GS is the best football rivalry

Troy vs USA is the best overall athletic rivalry.

Our hate for them in football is getting on up there and in baseball it has been a big deal for some time.

Georgia Southern vs App is by far the biggest rivalry for SOUTHERN FOOTBALL!

Georgia Southern adding 2 of Apps outstanding assistants this past season should help the rivalry moving forward. Both coaches have been better than advertised!

RE: Off Season Poll and Discussion #4: The SBC's Premier Rivalry
A-State v. Louisiana.
51 meetings.
27 determined by 7pts or less 53%

A-State denied the Cajuns a bowl in 1993 by beating Nevada changing the Big West tiebreakers.
A-State denied the Cajuns a bowl and the conference title in 2005 by winning with a late field goal in a Thursday night TV game, a game A-State probably loses but before half a Cajun defensive back goes through an A-State receiver who is a few yards short of the end zone to try to break up the pass but the ball is deflected and caught in the end zone by another A-State receiver.
The next year, A-State is denied a bowl when they lose the finale at Louisiana that would have given A-State 7 wins and been placed in an available bowl over an at-large 6-6.
2008 if A-State wins, the Red Wolves hit 7 and will send Troy to Birmingham to cover their vacancy and A-State will go to NOLA. Cajuns win by 5 at Lafayette and both finish 6-6.
The next year A-State wins by 3 in Jonesboro to deny UL a 7 win season.
2011 A-State wins and denies UL a share of the Sun Belt.
2012 A-State rolls the Cajuns on ESPN2 at Lafayette in the "run it again game" and again denies UL a share of the title.
2013 UL rolls A-State on ESPN2 in Jonesboro and seems to have the conference wrapped up, instead they stumbled late and had to share the title with A-State.
2014 A-State and UL play yet again on ESPN2 in game that saw players from A-State and UL and a coach from UL disciplined by the conference.
2015 another ESPN2 telecast, this time A-State wins by 10.
2016 Thanksgiving weekend in Lafayette on TV, A-State appears to have all but clinched the Sun Belt outright and denied the Cajuns bowl eligibility on a play inspired by the Annexation of Puerto Rico. Replay rules A-State's QB down before pitching the ball and UL wins and goes on to bowl eligibility and A-State has to share the title with App.
2017 on TV again, this time ESPNU, AState rolls UL and the Cajuns end up short of bowl eligibility.

We have no rival. That is all...............

OK, in all seriousness.........similarly to the more recent GA State vs GA Southern analogy; younger fans of our program may see that as the "rivalry"; but most older fans/alumni would probably say Ark State is our football rivalry. We've been competing with them for a VERY long time, and as conference mates in a few different conferences. As ArkStateFan noted in his post - long history of quality matchups. 04-cheers

Yeah I want this to be a relevant rivalry but it's a weird feeling to sit there and watch them play other teams and kinda silently hope that they barely pull of a wi....nope can't say it.

TBH, GS and GSU should not be on the list. We have played a total of 4 games. App v GS has many decades of history

The question wasn't who's played each other the longest though.

And GS vs GAST has a longer history if you look at the many decades of non football sports that have been played. GS vs GAST is a rivalry, has a trophy, and mutual hate from both sides. It belongs on this list just like the other two instate rivalries.

If we are singling out one particular sport, its hands down App/GS football, the sport that gets the most attention. If we are discussing all sports, others rivalries may have an argument.

I think having the point system trophy is stupid and including things like GPA and Community Service in that point system is downright cheesy.

It should be just for football. The rivalry didn't really start until we entered the same conference for football.
